SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

That couldn’t happen. The two omicron variants are too similar. To get a reinfection that soon you’d have to get exposed to delta first, then omicron for the reinfection. Which is next to impossible now that omicron has basically wiped out all the prior variants.
So odds are in favour of someone who has just recovered from it not contracting it again for a while? For example, I recovered a week or so ago, and had to isolate, meaning I couldn't see my kids as I normally would (they live with their mother). My daughter tested positive as soon as she got home from staying with me this weekend. Do you think it's at all likely I'll get it again from contact with her?

Well however it’s happened, person I know reinfected 3 weeks later. Positive, symptoms. Then a few weeks clear no symptoms. Then 3 weeks later, symptoms again and positive. Luckily they’ve been boostered

@decorativeed the scenario I’ve described I’d imagine is fairly rare, I’d think that You’ll be ok fir a few months at least

Incredibly unlikely, I’d say.

FFS had it this week, im assuming it was the weaker omicron but feck me its like a really bad cold that leaves you tired a lot, its no bueno and ive been triple jabbed. I cant imagine how people survived the original strains unvaccinated.

This was after they stopped mandating masks in schools here in NI and my wife is a music teacher, first week without masks and it gets her me and our son.

Same had it last week and man it knocked me out flat. No severe symptoms just like a cold on steroids but a week on I'm still exhausted and dizzy.

My daughter was sent home from school today with a bad cough and we just went to do a drive through PCR test. I said it was unlikely she'd have it again as we all had it in December.
The nurse at the school said she'd recently seen multiple kids have it twice within a couple of months, i.e. had it, fully recovered, then had it again.
So its more common than people realise and maybe its down to a new variant?
We are going to centreparcs next week, so hopefully we don't all get it again!

I tested positive, but feel fine, just a mild cough now and then.

Should I go back to work, or wait a few more days until I get a negative??

Got grief for wearing a mask in Sainsbury's. Some very far gone bloke telling me I'm normalising vaccines that are controlling us. Couple people who weren't masked came up after to say to me I handled it well and that it's none of his business, which I appreciated cause I am a bit worried about how unusual I am in still wearing one and it's comforting to have some folks who don't themselves be nice about me choosing to.

Yeah I honestly don’t know anymore, I’m lost since the governments removed all restrictions and it’s barely reported. Which on one hand is good but on the other I’d like to know the answer to questions like reinfection

I wore one at an outing at a museum Sunday afternoon and I only saw two other people not including my significant other who were masked. Got a few expected looks but at this point I really couldn't care less. Shanghai is in lock down and I'm ready for the ensuing uptick in cases stateside. You're doing the right thing

Just pull the mask down and tell the daft twat that you've got it next time.

You need to respect his freedom to disrespect your freedom, man

Out of interest, why are you still wearing a mask? Not judging, just curious.

I just think it's still worth minimising transmission where doing so comes at very little cost. I agree that 'everyone will get it' but like, I'd rather a couple people didn't get it an additional time from me, when on rare occasions infection can cause long term debilitating effects or even death.

Yeah, that's what I'd do. Tell him it's not illegal to go out rather than isolating any more and you would be happy to take it off and follow them around if wearing it bothered him so much.

I can't believe people are acting like this. You never saw someone being told off for trying to be hygenic in any other situations before. If anyone's normalising stuff, it's these people normalising loudmouthed idiocy.

So is the plan to mask up whenever you go to the supermarket indefinitely? Or is there a threshold for case numbers below which you’ll let your guard down?

I can totally understand people masking up if they’re worried about their own safety (or family members at home) but don’t really get the end game of those still wearing masks for the greater good. Especially now that covid has an IFR < flu. Because this means you’re committing to life long masking so long as covid or flu is in active circulation.

Just chewing the fat here. Obviously wouldn’t confront someone in person over this. I’m not a total monster like Will Smith.

Tested negative last Thurs so ended up having it for exactly a week. Felt like a headcold really and was a bit out of breath going up stairs and playing with the dog but seems to all be good now.

Realistically mask up until it becomes so unusual that I look like a loon for doing it. I'm reasonably chill with people thinking I'm a bit of an overreactor or that I'm virtue signalling but less chill about people thinking I've got some massively paranoid thing going on and I assume that'll be the assumption once it becomes very, very rare to see people in masks.

I still wear one in shops, mostly to be courteous to others. The guy who runs my local corner shop always wears his so I feel bad if I go in without. For all I know he could be immunocompromised. If I forget to take it out with me so be it but it doesn't take much effort to put it on when I go in a shop.

Fair enough. It’s a tricky one to negotiate. I’ve gone for following the official guidance as that way I feel less judged by either side of the mask culture war. Sounds like I have thinner skin than you (so maybe I’m more like Will Smith than I thought? :nervous:)

The other thing about masks now is that you’d need to wear the FFP2 disposable masks to do anything meaningful to omicron transmission and I hate the idea of contributing to millions of the fecking things ending up in landfill unnecessarily. Wearing a reusable cloth covering is completely pointless and they were the only type mask I’ve been wearing.

My daughter tested positive for 7 days middle of February, felt slightly ill , runny nose cough for a few days . She has just tested positive again for 16 days this time and was knocked for six by it , coughing until she was coughing up blood, fatigue , headaches , high temperatures and feverish . Her 10 year old son was positive both times but the 5Year old and 2 year old only on the second time. It seems very hit and miss .

I was convinced I had it after a stag do last weekend. Half the people that went ended up positive and I had all the symptoms bar loss of taste/smell. Did a LFT four days in a row and tested negative each time.

Almost wish I had been positive as it’s my sister’s wedding soon and I’ve been scolded by the family for getting tickets to the Leicester game 7 days before.

I guess it probably would be quite stupid to go

After a few days of gradually fading lines I took a test yesterday and it came up super quick...is it just luck of the draw with the sample or have I got super covid.

Second one.

Maybe you reinfected yourself.

And now 12 hours later I'm negative. Bizzare.

Masks aren't going to solve that, lockdowns are only thing that ever brought cases right down. With ICU numbers holding relatively low they won't go back to this, there'd be uproar.

Correct. They might reintroduce masks in shops etc to pacify the unions (even though it will make feck all difference) but nothing more substantial.

Meanwhile in China, Omicron is just getting started. Meanwhile vaccination rates amongst the most vulnerable age groups (and in particular the 80+) are still disastrously low.

I remember @hmchan saying that the poor vaccine uptake amongst the elderly in Hong Kong was in large part down to anti-American fuelled Pfizer vaccine scepticism. I wonder what’s behind the poor uptake in China?
