This resignation is just as damaging as the elections outcomes.
The Tories will be full of the usual excuses.
But the public are not interested in excuses.
They are demanding action. And they have successfully given Boris a real kicking.
Even more damaging I think, he was the loyal Boris supporter due to do all the media this morning, this is a clear message to other cabinet members to follow suit, today could be quite interesting.

I’m not sure what to contribute the large swing to, though. Are people tired of self-serving, law-breaking, corrupt Boris? Are they tired of the culture wars and division perpetuated by the government? Are they tired of the incompetence? Or is it just a case of “it’s the economy, stupid”?
Reason I’m contemplating this is, no government will be able to reverse the economic damage done by COVID, war and Brexit in a single term. In that case a Labour government might be short lived. On the other hand it would be comforting to know the country finally had its fill of Tory bullshit and performative politics of division.

So I'm not that up on politics. I try to keep up to date with day to day stuff, but regarding these by elections.
Obviously we have Torys and Labour, so using Tiverton as an example.

With all going on, it seems people aren't happy with Boris there, so why would they switch to the Libs and not the out and out opposition, Labour?

My only worry is that when Boris inevitably tanks them, all that shower of incompetence he promoted to positions of power to be his yes-men, will sink with him. Then they might actually promote someone capable. Whereas for example I really look forward to seeing someone like Liz Truss or Nadine Dorries trying to lead them to an election.

Because Lib Dems are seen as more fiscally conservative than Labour. They also contain a sizeable portion of libertarians among their ranks. Bear in mind that pre-coalition government, Lib Dems had significant presence in those parts, so perhaps quite a few are returning voters. Finally, long-standing animosity towards labour means the protest vote is more likely to go to Lib Dems than the former.
A number of reasons..
1. It's a true blue constituency, thousands of people vote Tory because they have always voted Tory, voting Labour might be to much of a change for them, whereas the Lib Dems are a more acceptable option.
2. It is a by-election so voting in the Lib Dems would not feel as though they are doing any "damage"
3. Lib Dems have a history of being quite popular in the South West, maybe not in Honiton and Tiverton, but Cornwall, Taunton, Yeovil etc all have a history of being Lib Dem
4. Most important is tactical voting!

Boris Johnson really is a coward. Always finds a way of running away at difficult times.
Tactical voting is the best chance we have of getting rid of the Tories.

The Labour candidate’s reaction in Tiverton when the LD candidate was announced just made me laugh out loud.
I haven't heard him yet, but my tory excuse guess is all post war governments suffer defeats in by elections, carry on dealing with the issues that matter and listen to the people but carry on anyway!
I think you'll see that across the country. It's how I would vote if a GE were called today. Boris needs to go but Labour are still not government material at this point. The radical elements remain and Starmer is an empty vessel.
I just hope we don't descend into a country of coalitions where nothing at all ever gets done.
Johnson had an 80 seat majority and has got feck all done though.

100%. Boris Johnson is the most valuable asset to the other parties in the UK right now. The fact he survived the no confidence vote and another can’t be raised for a year is even better.
As much as I’d love to see this Tory government out of power. I feel that keeping them there with Boris in charge is causing more self inflicting long term damage to the Tory’s than any other party could ever inflict on them.
Keep Boris in, keep the status quo and then that’s have a big bang at the next GE.
The Tory MP on Sky News is incredibly downbeat and sullen. You can see he knows the end is near for Big Dog .
I couldn't agree more but I worry about what he will put the country through in the next couple of years. On the other hand Truss or Dorries could be even worse for the Tory party.

I put a bet on Boris being out in June @ 16/1 when there were murmurings of a VOC. I’m definitely not confident he will go but it’s given me a little bit of hope
On a side note. It’s great to see that scum Jayda Fransen bottom of the vote in Wakefield with 23 votes. Probably all came from Protesting tories too.
