Westminster Politics

What has happened today has only been possible due to the last few years of Tory Governments ripping up democratic norms and conventions which have been the basis of the unwritten constitution for decades if not centuries.

David Cameron has to take his share of the blame for holding a referendum with absolutely no planning for what to do if he lost, and then walking away and not dealing with any of the consequences.

Very much agree with you about the idiot Cameron.
Such a native and stupid man.

Boris Johnson and Donald Trump. The worst leaders in the free world in modern times...easily. What a shitshow. I don't remember any PM lying as much as this clown has.

its not just the lying, it’s the incompetence of handling all of these lies exactly the same way and not trying to do anything different.

“I did something wrong”
“Did you know about it”
“Yea”
“Ok lie about it”
*lies*
*sends all his mates out to lie about it*
*truth emerges literally 10 minutes later after very little research*
“I didn’t lie, but I am sorry”

I was saying that same thing. Boris is so used to lying that he doesn't know the difference between fact the fiction.
In all my years, I have never known a PM so mired in lies.

bush and blair weren't that long ago.

He cant actually form a government with all these resignations and won't quit. At what point does the queen step in?

In short, never. That absolutely is not the monarch's job. It has instead always been a question of the PM knowing their limits and resigning when proper to do so. And there you have the problem with our constitution.

Not true the PM doesn't have to offer his resignation to the queen that's just a ceremonial tradition now. Parliament has the power to decide when a government goes and a new one has sufficient confidence to allow a new one to be formed. Queenie just does what she's told.

The Queen??? Ffs get a grip

You are invited by the monarch to form a government, which something he seemingly can't do now with all these resignations. As much as the monarchy stays out of politics, there has to be a point, or rather situation in which they intervene.

The end of this Government has begun

it’s just such a massive shame for us all….that it’s too late, they’ve started an unsurfable wave, we’ve just got too see what mess we are left with when the wave fizzles out

sadly, it’s a bloody tsunami, it’ll leave a substantial mess

Nope

I am not sure we differ here. There is no Vote of No Confidence yet and without one being carried (or lost , depending on your point of view) the PM remains in place. And he remains in place until he offers his resignation to the monarch. It may be ceremonial, like Royal Assent, but it is still necessary.

Seeing as it seems he's going to dig the heels in, I would imagine the likes of Truss and Gove are about to bounce.

Will there be a shitload of by-elections coming up then seeing as all of these MPs have resigned?

Yeah without a VONC or alternative motion he'll remain in place. He can't not resign follow that though, his skirting off to the queen is just ceremony as she has to follow parliaments lead not the governments/PM.

Would be fascinating to see how long Boris could stretch that grace period. I doubt they'd even wait 24hrs.

Apparently Paul Gascoigne has turned up at No 10 with some fishing rods, four cans of lager and a copy of the ministerial code.

resigned from government not from parliament. you'll see how virtuous those tory mps are when they resign from parliament and cut off the majority. which will happen precisely never.

They resign from their cabinet positions, not from their constituency representative role.

That's like expecting your houseplants to intervene in an argument between you and your wife. It's there for purely decorative purposes.

Ah okay thanks. Makes way more sense now

I’m from Ireland living in the north and I’m loving this. The DUP will be shitting themselves at the minute.

Is there any chance Boris could Putin this? Does your parliament procedure allow someone like Boris to basically take over politics if he went nuclear?

Gove sacked
