Westminster Politics

I keep refreshing this thread and it doesn't disappoint. Trying to follow all that's going on while at work literally means I'm not doing any work.

I'm fairly sure that puts me like 4th in line to be next PM

get in line. i’ve been busily stealing post it notes and touching up junior members of staff all morning to show my credentials.

Rory Stewart on LBC confirming when Johnson was sacked as Foreign Sec, he didn't leave the offices/accommodation for three weeks because he didn't want to pay rent on a flat!

Imagine he will be squatting in there like a Eton Fathers for Justice campaigner.

What is the point in having a Deputy PM if they aren’t installed in such situations?

No way he can continue until Autumn and absolutely no need to do so for that length of time. There’s literally no ministers left so don’t even know how that works and yet again would be an example of not doing what’s best for the country in the here and now. It’s always about the Tory party.

As if the thick but doubtless ambitious deputy PM wants to be seen as part of the old regime. They don't do any of this for anyone else's benefit you know

Another thing; quite bizarre seeing all these Torys coming out begging to be leader. I find the whole thing uncomfortable.

If there was that many members with such top quality leadership skills we surely wouldn’t be in this mess and Boris would have been ousted long ago.

Anyone who gets it can’t be a Boris loyalist surely and if they were when they withdrew their support is important. The bunch that clung on as long as he did should be excluded by default.

Oh I know. The whole thing is a disgrace even down to the severance payouts that people in office for a matter of hours will get (100s of thousands).

The house passed that as statue.

"I'm thoroughly delighted at this marvelous opportunity to serve the British people by fulfilling their mandate -"

"I'm sorry, Prime Minister, but we were told you were resigning."

"Resign? Good heavens, no. I meant I'm re-signing. Four more years, with an optional one year extension."

The damage to British politics has been done now though. Constant lies and fake news, the Referendum kicked it off and Johnson has been involved ever since.
Unfortunately, I agree with this. Similarly to Trump, he has damaged the country and the political climate irreparably. It wasn't only himself, he got plenty of support from the scum he has surrounded himself with for years, but he's arguably been the worst of all, and certainly the face of it all. Blatant lying without consequences and war on woke while the rest of policies shit on the people systematically, that's what politics is going to be for the coming years, if not decades. Dark times ahead, and not just in the UK, but with the UK out of the EU, you are going to be suffering even more than most other countries.

Ben Wallace defence secretary, installed as favourite for next leader.

I said that about Teresa May. They will win at least one more GE. The real danger here is they hire a competent leader who unites the party and the general public will forgot all about the last 2 years by the time the next Election happens.

Plus I can guarantee, the Tory party will be more United than Labour in the next election
May was never this bad.

There will be an election either later this year or early next, the pressure to do so would be too much for the new PM in my opinion, the opposition will call for one at every opportunity.

They don't have a competent leader in the Tory ranks, Wallace is not a leader, he was a Boris lackey and the opposition will tear him to bits over this.

Sky News' interview right now is hilarious with the music in the background

Tip.... want to spot the new (temporary) PM?

Scan through the Tory backbenches to find.... a total unknown!
Yes an unknown, after all they wont have to face an election, just keep the seat warm until party Grandees decided when they will hold it. Make sure this person has never made any controversial comments, preferably as few speeches as possible, looks serious all the time, never known to have lied, because he/she has done/said nothing they might have to lie about.

Get a bet on with 365 (other bookmakers are available)

The Tories will then;
Elect this person as soon as possible and surround them (in cabinet)with all those who will be making a proper pitch for the job once the Grandee's have plotted the course towards the GE.
When the time is right the interim PM steps down, either ill health, or wanting to spend more time with their family, either excuse will do!

Spat my coffee out at this, wasn't expecting it at all

Just listening to Starmer on the BBC. I long for him to be good, I really do. The country needs a change of government.

Sadly he’s just sat repeating himself on and on. Same phrases recycled. Like a parrot.

Why!

Wallace wins the polls and all of the run offs amongst verified grassroots Conservative party members. Hunt has too much baggage. Baker too decisive although he managed to squeeze in that he beat Hunt in a run off poll yesterday. I think they're gonna go with someone properly vanilla/boring.

I agree but think it's cos he realised the public are fecking morons. Rather than throw too many things out there, stick to a couple points and hope they land - it's exactly how the Conservatives keep winning and how Brexit happened. Just say 2/3 things again and again

Has all the signs of a Tory strategic withdrawal from power. They are not leaving they are going into regeneration mode. Labour should watch and learn, ready for the GE.
Let's not allow this post to get lost in the shuffle.
