The odd thing is though that 3 is still much closer to the truth than 6.500 people spout in this thread. Guardian's and other's reporting of this has been, in parts, odd. The numbers are too big even without making things up.

I'm always somewhat excited it is football it is the World Cup.
It is also better mid season, players will be more fresh physically and mentally.

Yeah, I agree the 6500 figure is taken out of context massively, as those figures do not take into account the projects those people were working on, nor who they actually we're (family members etc)

However the source I provided highlights clear corruption with the official figures, why the need for the host nation to cover up the figures?

Read an article lately where arrested LGBTs where emprisoned and beat and forced to “convert” in Qatari prisons where they can hold them without reason for up til 6 months. (Its in the law).

In this case they claim amorality for jailing them. I also find it hard to believe that fella in the tweet is the first one to public be arrested.

It’s not just the death tolls. In the Handball World Cup they hosted some years ago their authorities guarding the stadiums showed no respect for female tv-hosts requests simply due to them being women. One would sometimes think the Stoneage was more modern.
 
As a kid the World Cup was always the highlight of the summer for me and something I would look forward to a couple years in advance. I'd always try to arrange things so I could watch every game live. As I've grown older the excitement of international football has faded away a little by little. Even then I've still watched the major tournaments with great interest but now I couldn't really care less about the current edition of the WC.

The sheer audacity of holding an event like this in a human rights abusing shit hole of a country like Qatar is really turning me off from it.

Ideally I'd like to boycott the whole thing but I know I'll still probably end up watching a few of the evening games when I have absolutely nothing better to do but any real excitement is completely gone.

You gotta read that with critical eyes too and actually read the report as the linked website is a very rose-tinted summary.

The actual report in the same link states:

… so basically the report is based on what Qatar allows them to dive into.

The report further states:
Although it is currently not possible to safely present a categorical figure on the number of occupational injuries and fatalities in Qatar, the efforts made by ADLSA, MOPH, WURQ and the other institutions presented here, are key steps to enhance data collection, and more importantly, have led to concrete discussions on the gaps and the measures required to address them.

in other words the report does not have big amount of data and not all data to give a trustworthy figure of total death toll.

This is the report’s own words - so the 50 deaths claimed is just the ones Qatar officially have let the World and ILO know about.

Furthermore the report says:

Currently, there is under-reporting through the online notification system, particularly from small- and medium-sized enterprises. This is largely due to a lack of awareness among employers, as well as because of the financial liability and reputational risk that the enterprise can suffer. Despite the relatively severe penalties for failing to report occupational accidents24, employers are rarely sanctioned for non-compliance with this legal requirement.

So basically the report says that the numbers are plain out under-reported as there are no incentives to report deaths as entrepreneurs face punishment if a worker is killed.

Again, all words from the report itself. The report basically concludes that 50 people dead is what has been reported from Qatari authorities + there’s not enough valid data to get the real death toll.
 
Never been less arsed with a big international competition than this world cup.

More pissed off over the fact that the league games are interrupted(again).
 
Reading this thread and by reactions among my friends I get an impression quite a few people are really disgusted and not planning to watch this WC - do you think it will anyhow transcribe to viewership numbers, less money from merchandise, generally financial shitshow of this event?
 
I don’t even know which day it’s starting other that it’s coming somewhat soon.
 
The Boycutters should unite in watching some random small sports event in huge numbers :lol: Would be a fun way of protesting + getting a viewer count of some of the boycutting people

Was the same until I just googled it, didn't know if it began in November or December.
 
I'd like to watch it because of Canada making it for the first time in 30 odd years but the television rights make it damn hard. Only one provider, TSN, and unless I want to pay way too much to get cable and a pvr again, you can only watch live, no on demand.

I'll probably end up watching through dodgy sites or reddit links.

In Germany we would have the opportunity, at least partially, as amateur football is still playing while the world cup is on. Nice summary on that situation from an article from German magazine 11freunde about what fans have to expect when going to Qatar and if they even will travel:

"Mankel suspects that many German fans see it just as their duty to travel to the world cup. His on sense of duty isn't big enough for that. And also amateur football is running into december, his home club TSG Wörsdorf is going to have some important matches. On 27th oof November Germany plays against Spain in Al-Chaur. At the same time TSG Wörsdorf plays against FC 1934 Bierstadt in the Group League Wiesbaden. At one of those matches there will be beer."
 
Meh for now but I'm sure the fever picks up when the PL goes to its break. It's impossible to not love the WC no matter what, so excited to watch teams and players you don't usually get to watch.
 
The problem is that a WC in Qatar was only possible due to corruption, it all started with Nicolas Sarkozy lobbying for it using Platini, he was the one also involved in PSG transaction to Qatar btw... corrupt fecker.

I love how some guy above defending Qatar, accepted the corruption and said "It's the only way Qatar could host a WC, what do you want them to do, they would never be chosen legally"

I guess i have the right to rob a bank cause, unless i win the lottery, it's the only way I can become rich in 1 day .

95% of the population are migrant workers with feck all rights, the bid was corrupt as feck, Ireland aren't there and it's disrupted the season for no good reason so I'm not feeling it at all. I might watch some of the latter stages on a stream or if it's on in a pub I'm in.
 
Couldn’t care less to be honest. Will watch a few random games and thank my lucky stars I’m not subjected to the daft press in the UK vomiting their schizophrenic nonsense forth day after day.

Meh. Will watch the US matches & potentially quality knockout matches, but not going anywhere to watch them. Disappointed that the league had to get interrupted.
 
I am boycotting this. It just reeks of corruption and dirty business. Hate the interruption to the season and every TV channel is full of sports so not that bothered about missing out.
