Westminster Politics

Brilliant. Well done Victoria Derbyshire for calling out the constant raft of lies put out by the compulsive lying Tory government. She was completely right to do that because we have become desensitised to lie after lie.

Probably stepped on the dogs tail because it's black
Could be. I assumed it was part of the war on woke - dogs have had it too easy for too long and so called Guide Dogs are just another example of the virtue signalling elite trying to cheat biology.

I don't understand this one at all. Aren't there already huge pieces of infrastructure built for it along the way? Will they now just be monuments to tory rule from London to the Scottish border!?
Did anyone have to give up their house for the route?

Regarding the scrapping of HS2, I was listening to a programme manager who said that the route from Birmingham to Manchester was going to be funded with government borrowing.
And so there is no actual money to be saved.
And if Sunak announces that he is going to use the money saved by scrapping HS2 to be used for an east west rail link, that is also going to have to be funded by borrowing.

Surely this gives Labour room to be bolder. The centre ground is now all but abandoned by The Tories, they can occupy it, and not just that bit right of David Cameron, but that bit to the left of Tony Blair. They cannot drag the centre any closer to these Tory psychopaths, we cannot pretend this is normal.

Be bold and go for it, Keir. You're clean through and only Onana is in between you and the goal.

The other issues is it hurts our credibility with these sorts of projects. I am not a commercial guy, but our design team were told scraping this hurts us when we ask for funding on future infrastructure projects and UK would have a lower credit rating for such borrowing.

Torries have passed the centre ground straight to Labour. Even Labour can't mess this up, unless they pass it to another party and not take the shot themselves.

To be fair, it's fecking shite if it doesn't take you to central London.

As it stands, you can get a train from Birmingham to central London in an hour and twenty-five minutes. Once the first leg of HS2 is complete, it will take 42 minutes to get to Old Oak Common, but then an additional 33 minutes to get to Euston. So, if they complete the currently confirmed leg, at a total of 22bn, people will only save a grand total of nine minutes, but that does include a tube journey and that will rely on perfect connections and good service on TFL.

It gives them the chance of a generation to push progressive legislation forward. 18% ~ since Thursday and 20-30% avg for a year straight. That 18% will definitely jump to at least >25% after a Tory conference apparently designed to see how many points the Tories can lose.

The Tories have played the far-right card, lost points doing it, and now Labour have a decent progressive centrist, left of centre, opening to navigate. Remains to be seen.

This is the the DM's take on hate speech...

It's ok, he's going to force the disabled to work to make the numbers work. They can take HS2 all the way to Euston for their minimum wage jobs, knowing how the tories value accessibility. And even if they can't, they can drive in. Thanks for fixing the potholes Rishi.

My dogs country club got eaten up by it and permanently closed. Owners were heartbroken.
All for nothing. They will probably sell all the land off to developers to build apartments so they can move all the undesirables out of London

Surprised they don’t just build a wall around london and to hell with everything else

I was today years old when I realised there were country clubs for dogs.

How do you think everything else is funded? The government currently owes £2.6 trillion and borrows about £130b a year. Governments function on debt. The money is saved because its a few billion we don't need to borrow for that purpose.

Still, cancelling it is an incredibly short sighted decision and will cost him more votes than he realises, mine included.

The Hitler particles will be off the charts

Thank god the Labour party are here to focus on the real problems, like poor people and small boats.

So London gets another commuter route and the rest of the country gets a new high speed hub station with no high speed railway going to it, and Leeds is getting a tram!

Ok.
One small point.
The long term borrowing the government is borrowing in order to fund HS2 was primarily when interest rates were significantly lower.

It is still going to have to access long term borrowing in order to fund the whole raft of new projects. But much of that borrowing will now be at a higher rate and most likely for a longer term.

Sunak just said that every penny of the money (borrowing) saved by scrapping HS2 will be spent on these new projects.

So. Where is the saving coming from?
Because you don't just stop HS2 work in an instant. That will carry on for years.
It is all smoke and mirrors.

I like how he says him being the first non white PM isn't a big deal (I mean it is, and great) but then why did he spend the previous 10 minutes talking about it?

So if the money is being redeployed elsewhere I.e. zero savings, then why not just complete the project…? Am I missing something

Pure politics. Just Sunak pretending that he knows what he is doing. Nothing to do with reality.

I thought they were on the side of motorists?

Too many eyes on HS2, with an obvious end goal. It's easier to lose a few billion if you split it into multiple pots.

Maybe I misheard it but I thought he said he was giving 36b to transport projects, whereas cancelling HS2 would save something like twice that?

Either way they didn't borrow the full 100b HS2 money at the start, they get it as its needed. These new projects will be the same so it doesn’t really make any difference to the cost. He just didn't want to lose votes by bulldozing through Tory constituencies.

I have just checked because I was of the same thought.
The Sky News website says that he said he was....going to use the £36bn of savings....
But I do wonder whether this level of so called savings was actually verified by audit.

As I have said, all smoke and mirrors.
