Manchester United vs Roma

Roma are not dangerous in air, play Heinze CB so we can field Evrà and facilitate our push to attack them down the flanks.

This report is from the Belfast Telegraph.

Glengormley teenager Craig Cathcart could make his dream debut for Manchester United in tonight's Champions League quarter-final second leg showdown with AS Roma at Old Trafford.

United still fancy their chances of reaching the semi-finals after a 2-1 defeat in Rome but 18-year-old Cathcart admitted last night he was " shocked" to learn he had been named in Sir Alex Ferguson's squad for the mouth-watering rematch.

The Northern Ireland under-21 international was an unused substitute when United defeated Middlesbrough 1-0 in an FA Cup quarter-final at Old Trafford last month but now the talented centre-back has a chance of making his dream United debut during what could be another magical European night at the Theatre of Dreams.

"The Reserve team manager Brain McClair phoned me to tell me I was in the squad and I was shocked, but delighted," said Cathcart (pictured left).

"If I get on the pitch I will try and play my normal game but I would expect to be very nervous.

"We are meeting at Old Trafford at 11.30am before leaving for a hotel where the preparations will continue. I was meant to go to Rome but Louis Saha and Darren Fletcher travelled and I never made it but this will be a wonderful experience for me even if I don't play.

"I enjoyed being involved with the first team for the Middlesbrough game and you are treated like all the players are.

"There is enough class and quality in our team to win this game - we have no reason to fear anyone."

VDS

Wes, Rio, Heinze, Evra

Ronaldo, Carrick, O'Shea, Giggs

Smith, Rooney

This is the team I would start with. I know Heinze hasnt played at CB for us before but believe he has enough of a raport with Rio to make it work. He is clearly intelligent, defends well and knows the position.

If and when we need to roll the dice to make something happen, depending on the specific circumstances of the game and what is needed, take JOS off, bring Giggs into the centre, Ron switches sides and bring on Ole. He is best coming on for 20 minutes with relatively fresh legs. He always was, but more so now he is getting on a bit.

If that doesnt work: Dong on for Smith with 7 or 8 minutes to go?

VDS

Brown Rio Heinze

Ronaldo Ole Carrick Smith Giggs

Rooney Saha

I would go for a 3-5-2 formation and play all my attacking players.

The problem I have with this is that you dont have anyone on the bench to come on and change things if they have it sussed. I dont think you can overestimate the importance of having something in reserve that can change the game. Ole can do that with 20 minutes to go.

That is our biggest problem this season. We never have anything on the bench for when things arent going our way.

------Wes----Rio--Heinze

-------Fletch-Carrick-O`Shea-
Ronaldo-------------------Giggs

--------------Rooney
------------Smith------------

I'd go with this formation, choke the hell out of them italians in the mid field and give us a advantage in the final third!!!

I think when you play a highly technical team like Roma, you need to come out fighting and take the game to to them and not allow them to settle into their passing game. Tonight is to gamble, winners take all stuff.

The likes of Fletch, Richardson on the bench will do.

Not sure I agree with the application of this ethos specifically to Italian teams or technical teams. But I have always advocated taking the fight to our opponents, regardless of who they are. I think we are good enough to concern ourselves with our game and let them worry about us, naive as people will accuse me of being for it.

Which is why I advocate 442.

A bit like ayala or the poorly rated cannavaro. Never mind the fact he does it for argentina. Pure stupidity.

Ayala and Cannavaro plays CB regularly for their clubs and country. How many times have Heinze plays CB for us this season or for Argentina? And you think Heinze is as good as Ayala/Canna at CB? Think carefully now ... before you reply.

Maybe Roberto Carlos makes a good CB? or even Ashley Cole too?

I hope we get the goals tonight as I just placed a US200 bet on United.

He played for the argies at CB throughout the world cup. But i wouldnt start him there for us either.

Heinze is too short to play CB.

You are a 1st class mug. Dont try and change your arguement after you've been exposed for gross stupidity. Heinze is too short to play cb you said. Our survey said stop being a moron. Ive just given you two examples of top class short defenders at the highest level.

Now you're saying that heinze hasnt played there regularly...this i know, thats why it wont happen. His height has little to do with it. Even in the world cup arg operated 3 cb with ayala and heinze both in the 3. height problem...i think not.

I think Heinze's a much better centre-half than full-back

Never seen him in a back two though. His height's clearly not ideal, but he's got as great spring on him.

I agree that his attributes are more suited to the CB position, but i just dont think its time try it out in a game of this magnitude, when wes and rio have a fairly decent partnership when they arent conceeding two shit goals to pompey.

Fair summary. I agree that we need to come out at 100 mph.

I'm waiting for the team news to be released.
If Fletcher's playing, I'm putting a few quid on Roma going through.
Unfortunately, i agree with the others that we won't play our best players (Heinze CB + Evra FB). O'Shea in midfield would allow Carrick to get forward, whereas Flectcher, well, let's hope he doesn't pass the ball across the box like he did on Saturday for Portsmouth's first goal...

trust saf to play flecther,o'shea and richardson on the same team.

the problem with o'shea and brown, they have poor ball control and distribution, they'll just hoof the ball upwards without any meaning.

the problem with flecter is he likes chasing shadows.

and the problem with solsjaer is he hardly ever gets involved in build up play, would be better used as a substitue.

i hate putting all my hopes on ronaldo but he's hardly a big game player, hope he proves me wrong.

i thought i'd spread a little of my optimimsm. :D

on a more serious note how bout giggs in center mid and evra on the wings with ronaldo.

in the normal circumstances i wouldnt make evra a winger BUT...

1 heinze has already played one game againts rome and he knows their formation better.
2 evra is very attacking player and i'm sure he'd do ok.
3 evra also lacks match fitness which means lack of security in defense.
4 fletcher would NOT play....

-------van der sar

oshea------rio---brown---heinze

ronaldo---carrick---giggs---evra

----------rooney---smith-------

subs: solskjaer, fletcher, kuchzach, kieran, dong, cathridge (or whatever)

injured: park, saha, neville, vidic, scholes, silvestre

i have a strong feeling we are going to play the best game of the CL season and will go easily through. on the other hand theres no way u can say this is the team that has playd the best football in europe this season. too many injuries...

This game is going to be special

And I think we're going to win it!

I'd be happy with:

----------- VDS -------------

O'Shea - Brown - Rio - Heinze

Ronaldo - Carrick - Fletcher - Giggs

Rooney - Solskjaer

I'm not sure why you lot are fannying about with playing with 3 Central Defenders, Evra on the wing, players out of their normal position etc. etc.

Arguably one of our most important games of the season and you want us to piss about with a formation we've never used, or players playing out of position. Madness. . .

Come on United!!

Team
........................VDS...................
O'Shea - Ferdinand - Brown - Heinze
Solskjaer - Fletcher - Carrick - Ronaldo
...............Rooney - Giggs.................

Subs Kuszczak, Evra, Smith, Richardson, Cathcart, Dong, Eagles.

I've begun to think that Fergie might field:

------------------VDS---------------
O'Shea---Ferdinand---Brown---Heinze
--Ronaldo---Carrick---Fletcher---Evra
------------Rooney---Giggs----------

........................VDS...................
O'Shea - Ferdinand - Brown - Heinze
Solskjaer - Giggs - Carrick - Ronaldo
...............Rooney - Smith.................

I'm not a fan of Smith's, but I'd have him over Fletcher any day.
The key is to keep possession, and keep the ball moving across midfield to open up one-on-one's for Ronaldo and Rooney.

think we should this team:

VDS

Shea - Rio - Brown - Evra ( Heinze was shit last time!!)

Ronaldo - Fletcher - Carrick - Giggs

Rooney - Smith

Dont use Ole as an right wing.. that means we have no one that is certan a goal to put in in the last 30 min.,

COME ON UNITED!!

It's been a few years since we've had this sort of European night. Suck it in and pray your nerves can take it. That is all.

Well, as you mentioned he dosent play there on a regular basis despite certain experience in that position. I dont think now is the time to experiment.

Id love to know why you'd love to know this?

My mistake...you phrased it in a manner i took to mean you were talking generally. Theres no way he'll play there today.

but speaking in general there should be no problem playing the boy there. if mikel can manage it...

--------VDS--------
Brown-Rio-Heinze-Evra
Ronaldo-Carrick-Fletch-Giggs
----Rooney---Smith----

Although I dont think Heinze's the perfect DC, this time he should play in the middle. Evra's excellent and Brown is so much better than OShea.
