First off excuse me if this is being a muppet BUT I was reading IFFHS (International Federation of Football History and Statistics) on best Keepers of the century and our own (England's) Gordon Banks managed second whilst our own (United's) Peter Schmeichel ranked sixth (http://www.rsssf.com/miscellaneous/iffhs-century.html#worldkoc). Now I've only seen Banks in videos and have only read about him as I'm from a younger generation but from what I've scene and read I'm not entirely sure I would rank him the second best keeper of the century. He seems to have made some pretty big mistakes and quite often from what I can read about his life and games..

So I got to thinking about Schmeichel who is the best Keeper (to me) that I've had the honor of following over the years and can not imagine Banks being better upon my readings and videos..

Now am I just being an ignorant muppet because I wasn't around to watch Sir Gordon Banks or is the poll somewhat different then how others see it. And even though it's hard to tell for those of you who have seen Banks play live or have been able to follow him if he played during Schmeichel's days (or vice-versa) do you think there would of been a change in opinion? Could the other last in the other's days of football?

Cheers

I am not saying this couse i support united ,Schmeichel is with no doubt the best goalie there ever was .
If what i heard about Yashin is true , Schmeichel might be second after him.

I don't see Schmeichel just a goalkeeper , he's also a third CB or a sweeper . He leads the back line like no other.

I remember Banks....great goalie who gets the vote over Schmeichel because of:

a)Winning the World Cup
and probably of even more importance
b)That great unbelievable save against the greatest player who ever played....Pele in the 1970 World Cup final

Schmeichel can't compete with that unless you're a biased manc tosser who only found football in the last 10 years and is a no-nothing

Just to argue with your specific points...

1) Schmeichel won the European Championships in 1992. Certainly a tougher achievement than Englands. Especially as they didn't even sodding qualify for the tournament!

2) Schmeichel made a career of fantastic saves, not just one notable save. I also remember Schmeichel making the 'Banks' save in Europe against one of those Czech or Bulgarian sides whoever it was

Wasn't he the jewel thief or was that some other overrated knob from the 70WC side?

Yeah, nice one John Bull. Probably got a picture of Churchill up in your living room as well to look at while you're eating your jellied eels and pickled onions. Your basing your synopsis of Banks over Schmeichel over that one save from Pele? OK then, what about Schmeichels several saves of outstanding quality you can find on any compilation DVD, try Ten Seasons of the Premier League in the Top Ten Best Saves category, there are two in there that are better than Bank's effort, also let's not mention the save versus Vienna in 1997, that defied logic for a man of 6"5 to be able to get down to that so low, so quickly. Also, can you remember back to Euro 92 in Sweden? Yugoslavia were banned from the competition for the Balkan conflict so Denmark were included at their expense, and look what happened; they beat the reigning World Champions Germany in the Final, mainly due to the performances and leadership of one Peter Schmeichel. Can you remember back to 1992? Or are you someone who found football after Wenger arrived....??????????

Beat me to it Braddy Boy!

Is that the same save when they asked Banks about it, and he said he thought it was a better save than his Pele one? I know it was one around that time. He said something like the ball was moving faster and the angle more acute.. (if I remember correctly..)

Both Banks and Schmeichel were great keepers and I wouldn't like to choose between the two but one of the best displays of keeping I ever saw was Gordon Banks playing at OT for Chesterfield youth team. United won about 6-1 and Banks had a blinder and to me was close to MOM. He was an excellent keeper, probably the best in the world in his day, and some of the comments here are just plain crap. As for Scmeichel being the best ever you have to look back a long time to say that, a lot longer than I have lived. Players like Yashin, who was awesome, Swift, Trautman all spring to mind and there are many others I can't think of.

Banks didn't wear hi-tech gloves... didn't even wear gardening gloves, half of stout and a fag at halftime too I bet

Without trying to sound like I'm arguing with you, because I think you have very good points and very good examples, all those listed are legendary keepers, but I think you are basing your assessments on goalies who are obviously from your era, and in that regard, you are a bit biased, rather like saying Rocky Marciano and Joe Louis were the best boxers that ever lived over Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr, older fellas tend to that! Although you could say we're biased to Schmeichel because we grew up with him....

Quite right.....difficult for those of you who can't remember Pat Jennings or Alex Stepney let alone Gordon banks.

Maybe Schmeichel was the best goalie in the premiership dating from 1993....or would that be Seaman?.....but was he better than Banks? I don't think so and unlike most of you guys......I saw both play.

Seaman wasn't fit to tongue Schmeichel's danglers, I was waiting for you to bring up him and Jennings.....
Schmeichel was not only the best goalie from 1993, he is certainly the best goalie the English league has ever seen, and a very good shout for the best the world has ever seen. Behave with your Seaman and Jennings.

Nothing like being patronised...

I used to be a keeper at school. I also used to be a right sad bastard and watch as much football from the past and present as I could get my hands on. I'm not speaking from a position of a JCL, who has heard the names but never seen them in action. Obviously don't have the benefit of having seen them live, but then again I wonder quite how many times you actually did that? Given (bar Stepney, whose daughter I used to go to school with incidently) none of the mentioned played for United, you won't have seen them week in week out. Everything I've seen has put me in absolutely no doubt I've been blessed to see the greatest keeper there has ever been, if not the very best

As usual the first reaction of an older supporter is to knee jerk dismiss anyone's opinion who're 30 years old or less

I saw both and I have to say that The Great Dane is by far the best keeper I have ever seen. Banks made some fantastic reflex saves and his positional sense was very good for the day. However Schmeichel was a more complete keeper who dominated attackers, bossed his defence around and started attacks with huge throws and kicks. Banks also never had to cope with the packpass rule which was introduced just as TGD joined us.

did you ever play cheesy biscuit at school?

Not when he was golakeeping he wasn't. The injury in 72 finished his career.

:nono:

He played for St Patrick's Athletic and Fort Lauderdale Strikers (with George Best) after his accident.. The one-eyed monster!

Yeah, but he never made that save from Viagra-Boy as a cyclops, did he?

Sir Alex of Stepney, European CF, Eusbio save......

Sir Alex of Stepney, European CF, Eusbio save......

Incredible save; Eusebio, then widely reverred in the same way Ronaldinho or Kaka would be today as the best in the world, applauded Stepney even after he'd kicked the ball back into play, fantastic gesture from a great footballer. Bet you wouldn't have seen someone like Inzaghi do that would you?

Yeah but didn't Alex kind of wave him away like "yeah yeah yeah, feck off out of it"

yes, he did! He was trying to boot the ball out and Eusebio, graciously although a bit too over zealous, wouldn't shift and kept trying to pat him on the head until Stepney booted it out and then he held out his hand to him in acknowledgment.
I read a while back that Eusebio was forcibly removed from his home in Mozambique as a young kid to Portugal, does anyone else know if this was true or heard of this?
