Sporting Lisbon vs. Manchester United - Wednesday 19 September 2007 (19:45 BST)

We beat Benfica home and away last season so why not Sporting:smirk:

We were shit in Benfica. Lucky to get a win, great strike by Saha even though it took a deflection. It was also the worst game i've ever seen Rooney have in a red shirt. But ye i fancy us to win this one. 0-3! Get the goals flowing again.

I can definitely see Carrick, Hargreaves and Scholes all starting - if one gets left out I'd reckon Carrick from his last performance.

If they do all start I'd like to see Saha and Tevez ahead of them - probably with Ronaldo - Rooney to come off the bench later.

Would be my team, too. With Anderson and Rooney to come on in the 2nd half

Me too, but we all know he never plays 4-4-2 in Europe. As much as I'd love to see it, I don't think he'll go with that

Hargreaves has not trained and is unlikely to feature in this game.

So we'll probably continue with Carrick and Scholes. Saha and Tevez should start though for some reason i think Sir Alex being ultra cautious as he usually is for Champions League away games would put Giggs in central midfield.

And then Tevez, Nani and Ronaldo upfront as a three. Saha has to start though; just give him the start and then pull him off later on rather than the other way around.

Anderson should be on the bench; no reason for not putting him in there. He needs proper games and we have room to spare with 7 bench places. So rather than filling them with youngsters we won't use, might as well get the lad some match practise. Rooney as well.

Hargreaves has been training all of last week and Ferguson said he will play yesterday.

Not what Hargreaves has been quoted as saying on SSN

Revised team then -

GK: VDS

RB: Brown
CB: Ferdinand
CB: Vidic
LB: Evra

RM: Ronaldo
CM: Carrick
CM: Scholes
LM: Giggs

CF: Tevez
CF: Saha

It should come on skysports website anytime soon now; after the Mourinho champions league press conference they read out quotes from Hargreaves saying he hopes to be fit for the weekend game and will almost certainly miss the Sporting game.

feck, i did'nt know that either. I want him back for the Chelsea game, could potentially be crucial.

Just seen this on SSN - is this not correct so or has something happened since ?

Manchester United have been boosted by the availability of Wayne Rooney and Owen Hargreaves for their clash with Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday.

The pair both missed England's recent Euro 2008 qualifiers but are now fit for the start of the Red Devils' UEFA Champions League campaign.

Hargreaves has been absent with a knee injury while Rooney has not featured since fracturing his foot against Reading on the opening weekend of the season.

However, the pair have returned to training and Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed they will both be in his squad that travels to Portugal.

Available

"They'll both be okay for Wednesday," Ferguson told MUTV.

"We took medical advice on Wayne and as he had only started training on Monday, we felt that five days' training was maybe a bit short.

"But he trained on Saturday morning, Sunday and he'll train right through until Wednesday. By that point he will definitely be available for the match against Sporting."

Hmm i was wondering about that article myself. Been trying to see if they got the latest Hargreaves quotes somewhere on SSN website. I think the above article while posted today must have taken quotes by Sir Alex from yesterday.

Eagles has no business being ahead of Anderson. He's lucky to even be a United player.

Thats a good attacking side :D

Hargreaves Resigned To Missing Sporting Chance

Despite earlier hopes that he would be fit enough to face Sporting, Owen Hargreaves has virtually written off his chances of a Champions League debut for Manchester United in Lisbon on Wednesday.

Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves, 26, looks like missing his club's opening Champions League group game in Lisbon after all.

The Red Devils take on Sporting Clube de Portugal on Wednesday, and manager
Sir Alex Ferguson was optimistic that Hargreaves would be fit for the trip.

But having missed England's two recent games with a thigh strain, and also sat out Saturday's Premier League win at Everton, Hargreaves was unable to train on Monday morning this morning and now seems to have resigned himself to being in contention for the weekend game with Chelsea.

"It's okay, I have never really had this injury before so this is new territory," he said.

"I thought I would be fit for the Israel game, then the Russia game and then Everton, but I've still not done it. I have to take it day by day so hopefully I will be fit for the weekend.

"I can't say for certain but it looks as though I won't be ready for Wednesday because I have not trained."

Hargreaves believes his latest injury, and the tendinitis problem that damaged his pre-season preparations and ruled him out of the Premier League opening, is related to the broken leg he suffered in Germany 12 months ago.

"It is frustrating," he said.

"I missed pre-season then I had a run of games and I was really enjoying it.

"It is just disappointing to suffer something so niggly. But I think these injuries come from last season when I broke my leg."

Ferguson has already lost Mikael Silvestre for the season with cruciate ligament damage, while Park Ji Sung and Ben Foster are recovering from similar injuries.

Wayne Rooney is hoping to be involved in Lisbon after fracturing his foot on the opening day of the season, but midfielders John O'Shea and Darren Fletcher are definitely out after suffering knee injuries on international duty with the Republic of Ireland and Scotland, respectively.

Hopefully Rooney's fit.

Why no Louis if you don't mind me asking?

It's about time we change that if we want to win that stupid thing again

I'm with you, as are many, but unfourtunately i don't think Sir Alex is just now. Guess we'll know one way or another in about 38 hours give or take.

To any watchers of the Portuguese league so far this season, how have Sprting started their campaign?

Thanks

They have played 4 games and have 9 points. They are in 3rd place and have a 100% record at home.

I hope we play this team.

Rooney: I'm ready to play

WAYNE ROONEY is ready to make an explosive comeback by firing Manchester United to a dream Champions League start tomorrow.
The England striker has declared himself fit for United’s Euro opener at Sporting Lisbon after shaking off a metatarsal injury.

Rooney insisted: “I’m fine. I feel I could have played a few weeks ago and I’m a bit disappointed I haven’t.

“But it was probably the best thing in the long run. I’ve been dying to play. I wanted to make sure the manager knew I was ready to come back.

“The manager and physios have been a bit cautions and rightly so — it’s a long season.

“Hopefully, I can get a run-out on Wednesday and get back playing.”

Rooney, 21, picked up his injury against Reading on the opening day of the season.

He added: “It’s the third time I’ve had this injury and it was disappointing it happened so early in the season.

“But because I’ve had them before I know when I’m ready to return.

“I know there has been a lot of talk about the boots but they are fine. If you have a lad like Michael Duberry stamp on your foot, then it is quite likely that foot is going to break.”

United midfielder Owen Hargreaves is still not ready to return from a thigh strain.

I feel his return will be the start of a much more familiar run of form for us.

Pique/Gibson/Evra

Giggs/Rooney

Saha/Tevez

We'll have five in midfield, no doubt about that, and at least one surprise like Evra on the left wing and Evans/Pique as left back or Pique/Gibson as defensive midfielder.

It's really a shame Hargreaves won't be able to play, as he was bought with Europe in mind, and this would've been a good occasion to see his quality and the kind of job he could do for us in Europe. But I'm sure Carrick will be a good enough replacement.

Am i the only person that doesn't want to see Brown at RB anymore. Its not effective. We should have given Simpson a chance over the last couple of games as he was pretty highly rated at Sunderland last season.
