Bolton Wanderers vs. Manchester United

It´s gonna be tough but we have a good record over there and they´ll miss Anelka badly, I´m expecting a win here.

Shame Rooney´s out, he likes scoring against Bolton, but so do Ronaldo and Saha so we should be able to bang in a few :smirk:

Bolton Wanderers. As per usual, I'm going to give my low down on the opposition (as i did for Arsenal and Blackburn). Though this one has been more challenging.

Jaaskelainen - The Finn is one of the most consistent performers in the League. He is a good shot stopper and has a decent command of his area. Bolton have only shipped 8 goals in 7 games at the Reebok this season in the League - 7.

McCann - in the absence of Nicky Hunt, McCann played at right back against Boro. The former Villa man is a solid enough player but better (actual) full backs have been torn to shreds by our wingers. He could be in for a torrid time of it - 4.
Meite - the big Ivorian has been a Bolton for a long while now, clocking up 193 appearances. He is strong and relishes is physical battle but lack of mobility could see him tormented by our front men - 6.
O'Brien - a man not deemed good enough to stay and play in Newcastle's defence. A damning indictment. A solid player, nothing more - 5.
Gardner - competent enough defensively, the Jamaican comes into his own on the front foot. Gives Bolton width and a good crosser. Could spend most of the game on the backfoot - 6.

Campo - an evergreen player somewhat bemusingly dropped by Little Sam. He is a fiery so-and-so and allies his aggression with confident passing abilities - 7.
Nolan - a year ago, Nolan was being touted as an England midfielder. Now he is trying to resurrect a flagging career. A late equaliser against West Ham may have signalled a change in fortune. Good box-to-box midfielder, albeit a little one paced - 6.
Speed - another who fell out of favour with Little Sam. The Welshman is still supremely fit and is a technically sound player - 6.

Diouf - something of a hate figure for opposition fans. When he is on form he is a good player. Good speed, trickery and crossing. Watch out for flying phlegm though - 7.
Guthrie - the former Liverpool man has featured 10 times since moving to Bolton (9 times as a starter). He has found the net in the League Cup - 5.

Davies - by virtue of the fact that Anelka looks to be missing. Davies is a real handful and Vidic and Ferdinand will know they've been in a battle. Good touch for a man of his size. Hard working, but not prolific - 6.

= 65/110. (Considerably lower than Arsenal and Blackburn).

Bolton have found the net only 11 times in 13 in the League. They did manage to rattle two past Bayern though, in the Uefa Cup. Worryingly for them, Anelka has scored 6 of the 11 and looks like missing out. No one else in the squad has scored more than 1 League goal.

Bolton's last six League matches at the Reebok have seen them pick up 6 points (1 win, 3 draws and 2 losses).

Discipline wise, Bolton have yet to pick up a red card this season, in any competition.

In 19 games overall this season, Bolton have picked up only 3 wins. They have drawn 8 and been defeated 8 times.

Their biggest win to date was a 3-0 victory over Reading but they have not succumbed to a heavy beating this season yet. Though United do tend to go goal crazy at the Reebok.

Bolton have kept 2 League clean sheets and failed to score in 4 games.

Megson is yet to win as Bolton manager and is not widely supported amongst the fans. They have the unenviable lowest ever Premier League attendance, recorded this season.

Hey feed Me are you working for the BBC Match preview or something?

Nah, I was just trying to infuse a bit of quality debate into the matchday thread. Take it on board, if you wish. The Arsenal one roused a few differing points of view. Numerical ratings tend to get the argument going a bit I find...

Feed Me, i enjoy reading your pre match ratings, i agree with 99% of them...
What would the Utd team score out of 110?

Cheers mate. :D

Trying to be objective as possible:

VDS: very consistent. Bags of experience. One of the best in the League - 8.

Evra: quite contentiously, I am still not 100% convinced. Terrific going forwards. Questionable defensively at times - 7.
Vidic: likes to do the dirty things in the game. Quite an understated long range passer - 8.
Ferdinand: reads the game brilliantly and has good speed over the ground. World Class - 9.
Neville: Injuries have kept him out of first team contention since March. We have not really missed him. Improved over the years though - 7.

Giggs: he had been a bit hit and miss this season, but against Blackburn he was vintage. Still brings big game experience, hence his inclusion against Arsenal - 8.
Scholes: the tempo setter of the team. Brilliant short and long range passer. He has no peer in the League - 9.
Hargreaves - a limited player compared to his teammates but carries out an important role. Injuries are devaluing him - 7.
Ronaldo: scores goals. Creates goals. Speed, Flair and Strength. Complete package. One irritation is his laziness in tracking back - 9.

Tevez: has settled nicely now and formed a nice pairing with Wayne. Has got some goals aswell which will have settled him. Never lets opposition defenses rest and is a selfless player - 8.
Rooney: injury has disrupted a hot streak. Has come into his own in the main striker role; he seems to be understanding his job now - 9.

What's that - 89/110?

--Brown-------Rio----------Vidic----------Evra---

--Ronaldo------Hargreaves--Carrick-------Giggs--

-----------------Tevez---Saha-------------------

I have gone with Carrick over Anderson & Giggs over Nani. The away match with Bolton will be a tough one as Bolton will play a dirty scrappy game with long balls pumped to their centre forward. Thus the not so well built Anderson and Nani will be outmuscled and bullied out of the match. Carrick and Giggs will have more experince to play this kind of scrappy matches...Others choose themselve. I predict a 1-0 victory without any good football being played here...

Probably from a setpiece header by Vidic

Bout fooking time, Im spending about 2 grand a month on digital these days(slight exaggeration there!!!) There seems to be less matches on tele than in previous seasons under the old PPV system.

The Fulham, Derby(Ireland only), Everton and West Ham(Ireland only) games will be televised on Setanta in December. The Liverpool game on the 15th is on Sky. The Sunderland game on Boxing Day is the only game not being televised in December.

The Blackburn was originally supposed to be on Setanta in Ireland until it was changed until the Sunday.

I'd start Carrick instead of Hargreaves and give him a 8. And Ronaldo isn't lazy when it comes to tracking back, I reckon he tracks back more than Giggs does nowadays.

Agree with the rest though.

just felt like being different. ronnie on the bench for a 46th minute sub if we aren't ahead. which won't be necessary. bolton to wither.

hargreaves to score a rebound goal, saha from 35 yards, rio header, saha pen.

feck that, we have to start our best team possible.

Bolton are shite, but this is probably going to be one of those games for them; game raising cnuts.

Start Ronaldo, if we thump them, bring on Nani, not the other way around IMO.

If Ronaldo needs a rest, give him one against Roma, against Derby, but not this one. They are at home, this is their derby, and plus, I like giving those bastards a good thumping.

Hopefully there are no injuries. fecking internationals!

I'd play:

--------------------VDS------------------------
Brown---------Rio--------------Vidic-------Evra
Ronaldo-------Carrick------Anderson------Giggs
---------------Tevez-------Saha--------

Carrick over Hargreaves for me, and Anderson's current form is very good. Giggs had a nice rest while I hope Tevez isnt too tired after playing for Argentina in South America

Because of Serbia's game being canceled due to snow it seems somehow they plan to replay it on the 24th... which means it's uncertain if Vidic will be available for this game.

uefa are hopeless

What's more irritating is that Serbia can't even qualify. The game is a dead rubber.

Pique has been good enough whenever he has stepped in though.

As it's a dead rubber, Hopefully Serbia will let Vidic leave the squad and play for us against Bolton.

This is probably the quietest game our players experience all season! The place is always mostly empty.

United to win 1-3, I can see Hargreaves finally having a great game for us

I'm sure they will have a good number of fans there to watch THE CHAMPIONS

The international break has actually been exciting for once. But I cannot wait for the return of club football.

News on Vidic is along the lines of: if Serbia are out, the national team may well release him to feature against Bolton.

Any chance GNev will be back??...... I have an ominous feeling the words "2 weeks" are gonna be in the media soon enough!!!

I think we will have a problem up front! Rooney is out, Teves won`t be back to training before Friday.. and Saha is not 100% fit :(

finally a weekend with United

fecking boring internationals

Not many of our players played 90 min for their national teams yesterday and last week.
Rio, Vidic, Hargreaves, Carrick, Saha, Anderson, Giggs have not played since the Blackburn game and will all be fresh hopefully.
Evra and Wes played in friendly games last week against Morocco and Austria.
Nani played 5 min for Portugal against Finland and Tevez was sent off after 25 min for Argentina.

VDS
Brown - Rio - Vidic/Pique - Evra
Ronaldo - Hargreaves - Anderson - Giggs
Tevez - Saha

PIG, O'Shea, Carrick, Nani, Fletcher.

Who would you have played alongside Hargreaves? Anderson or Carrick?

I really don't expect this game to be as easy as many are predicting, Bolton's never easy place to go (except last season) and even though they are in bad form, they are starting to regain some confidence, especially getting a draw away at a good Bayern side. Add to that, Anelka and Diouf will be back and Nolan's back in the team, I don't think this will be a walk in the park, I'd settle for a 1-0 or 2-1, as long as we get the three points, I'll be happy.

I think United will overrrun them, but Anelka can always be a threat at the back, but if Bolton do set anything up United will hit them on the counter

I hope I get to see another one of these:D
