Liverpool vs Manchester United

Alonso's been passed fit to start.

Benitez will play Alonso, Gerrard and Mascherano in midfield.

Do we ignore this, play a midfield two and try to steam-roller them? Or do we adapt our team selection/formation?

Don't forget, we're the away team.

Discuss.

You don't ignore it, no.

But that doesn't mean we have to change the formation, especially to one we tend to struggle with when we play it. When Giggs plays on the left he tends to tuck in anyway, then you have Rooney and Tevez who help out the midfield. I also feel the opponents gain an psychological advantage when they see us line up in what can only be described as a cautious approach.

Not inconsiderable, to be fair.

But he has played him much more as an out and out striker this season.

Except in big games, of which there haven't been many, granted. But he will do on sunday.

He's Sir Alex Ferguson, I'm sure he knows best.

Its going to be a nailbiter either way, but Larsson linked up play well in your intricate passing last season. This year, as you say, you have an improvement in Tevez.

Whereas we replace the likes of Sissoko, Bellamy and Gonazales with Mascha, Kewell and Torres. A much more significant improvement on our weaker areas you'll agree.

But like I said, it'll be a nailbiter. We should have hammered you last season with the likes of those 'weaker' players but as luck has shown it doesn't favour the brave.

Not really. You're conveniently forgetting about Anderson, Hargreaves and the fact that our two best players (Rooney and Ronaldo) are at an age where they're improving massively, year on year.

Our team is significantly better than last season and Tevez is just the cherry on the cake

Can't see us losing

Agreed, the important thing is we have Fergie who is the most experience manager in the premiership and when it comes in this kind of situations, Fergie doesn't disappoint us. Remember we are so strong in this season in terms of defending and attacking.

Who knows it could draw 1: 1 or 0:0 but I expect from United to win this game to take the lead before Xmas.:)

I hope we win because I hate to lose against the dippers.

I hope we win also because anything will only go to cement the fact that is it Liverpools year

Lets remind the last minutes of the game at Anfield by fans of both sides

fecking class

Alonso should have gotten a second yellow in the 86th minute imo

Rooney targets top spot

Wayne Rooney is targeting a double on Sunday - victory over fierce rivals Liverpool at Anfield and top spot in the Premier League.

United will go top if they win and Arsenal drop points at home to Chelsea. And Rooney is looking forward to what could be a pivotal day in the title race.

“It's a massive weekend for the top four clubs,” he told ManUtd.com.

“The fact that Arsenal and Liverpool both lost last weekend was great for us. We know that if we win on Sunday then we’ve got a great chance of going top. That will spur us on.”

Not that Rooney should need any extra cajoling as a Liverpool-born, Everton-bred striker visiting Anfield.

“The rivalry between United and Liverpool is huge,” added the striker. “When the fixtures come out, I always look for the game against Liverpool, and City as well.”

United’s last-gasp 1-0 victory on Merseyside last season was a crucial moment in securing the title. But Rooney, who was substituted in the match with an injury, admits he didn’t actually see John O’Shea’s incredible winner.

“I was getting stitches in my leg in the dressing room,” he recalls. “I heard a big shout and the next thing I knew Scholesy walked in having been sent off. Everyone was thinking ‘oh no’ and we were all hoping we could hold on for the draw.

"Then our press officer ran in saying Sheasy had scored. We were all jumping around and I went straight back out to the pitch. It was one of the best feelings I’ve experienced.”

The away end was awash with ecstatic celebration, and the 3,000-or-so fans that make the trip again this weekend will be in equally good voice. “Our fans are unbelievable,” added Rooney.

“It’s always a good atmosphere at Anfield when United go there, and we’ve got the best away fans around. They never stop singing throughout the game and supporting the team. I think they could really help us on Sunday.”
