Our lad Ronaldo

Is that a fact, or a (poorly;)) calculated guess?

You would expect more, we all do, he does himself. But clearly he takes a while to get back into his stride. His instinctive movement and finishing has been evident so far since he's gotten in three one-on-ones with the keeper and scored one and he's already scored 3 goals, all the while with 3 assists and some incisive passes. That's above average to me.

His shooting was woeful tonight and any player that hits a shot at every opertunity is always going to get a few goals. His over all contribution pails in comparison to most other players in the team so far.

What poorly calculated guess are you talking about here? the fact that he will leave? I thought that was pretty much a given, even to the hardcore Ronaldo fans.

some of this is pathetic

the lad is struggling to get to the level of fitness that everyone else has - he's frustrated at not being at that level right now but he'll get there and be back to his usual self. If you think otherwise now, just think on in a few weeks time.

I'm not wild about some of his arsey pouting and posturing and sure, he definitely has an ego thing. Don't they all? Maybe not as much as Ronaldo but they do. He has just come out again and said he's at the right club without any real prompting. Yep, could've been more emphatic but considering he'll be well aware of his subdued welcome back, that's understandable. His behaviour in the summer was better than Berbatov, Lampard, Adebayor and probably several others. He didn't agitate the club for a move. There may be some truth in the fact that he only wanted to go if it was "acceptable to United". Whatever, he didn't actually conduct himself that badly over the affair. His current demeanor is clearly a result of his dissatisfaction with his form and standing with the supporters. Like Ferg said about the team, "we'll be right by the end of October" - Ron will be right by the end of November. He's just had to catch up.

The question is when your team is comfortably winning and when you score a goal ,is it hard to even throw a little smile. Not being happy with his performance doesn't prevent someone from sharing th joy with his team-mates (unless they're very arrogant and always think about themselves that is)

When Ronaldo leaves next summer, will you Ronaldo lovers buy Real MAdrid replica shirts?

Ronaldo has been like this for most of his time here, he is a moody bastard and that's just him. Get over it.

I didn't see people buying Aston Villa shirts when Djemba Djemba left, I'd be very surprised if Real Madrid shirts will be bought.

I hope Ronaldo reigns as the best player in the world this season, he's a Manchester United player.

The lad you mention wasn't exactly a fan favourite like Ronaldo. Or anywhere near being the best player in the world.

I am of the opinion that United should have sold Ronaldo in the summer for as much dosh as they could get. United will go on without him, and be just as successful. Only SAF own stubbornness prevented him from being sold.

He probably feels he doesn't deserve acting the big man at the minute anyway. There is no issue. He's not Unhappy. We see him smiling at training, sometimes during games but he's a complex lad

Remembering a few years back he scored but was angry at himself visibly for missing other chances. That's just how he is. Least that's not fake

Like most people have said, his form in terms of running with the ball isn't there yet but there is no questioning his effort and application.

We'll probably have to put up with a new thread in the Football Forum everytime he does a step-over at Madrid.

Ihabx7 will make a video for every one of them.

Just kidding Ihabx7. I love your videos.

Think he's trying a bit too hard, atm, a bit too intense and hoping it all comes back in a flash. Needs to relax a bit and just let it flow. Be about end Nov. before he's back to previous. The summer shit and the injury - or playing with it - has taken it's toll.

Good joke mate, anyone who thinks that I would do videos of him if he was not a United player is a total idiot.

New Ronaldo video will be uploaded tonight. No jokes. I think its very good.
Nani video to follow next week.
Scholes video is still in progress, I've loads of material and ideas, should be one of my finest works.

I don't care what's causing his ridiclously foul attitude on the pitch, but it's not good for the team. Whether it's because he wants to leave or whether it's because he's not playing well himself (ignoring, of course, that the team as a whole is playing well -- he doesn't care at all about that), is irrelevant. Fact is that him out there sulking on the pitch is not good for squad morale as a whole, and until he stops being a petulant little child I'd rather see someone like Tevez play ahead of him. At least Carlitos actually gives a shit.

When Beckham left I saw shiteloads of Beckham Madrid shirts. Sad to say it, but there's a lot of "fans" out there who'll follow the player and not the club.

Great. Looking forward to your videos:devil:

He'll be fine as soon as people stop scrutinising his every gesture, and stop looking for significance in every single moment we see him.

He isn't fully fit yet, and once he is, and playing well and scoring goals, he'll be as happy as a pig in shit. Just wait and see.

get a grip - there is no "foul attitude" and "it's not good for the team"? Can't say I've noticed since Ron's been back. In fact, I'd say our better form has coincided with his return so it hasn't done too much harm.

he's clearly frustrated with his own inabiltiy to match others match fitness. He's had no pre-season. He scowls, huffs and puffs like Rooney did when things weren't gong right for him. I've never been wild about his on field mannerisms and sometimes his behaviour, but it's not much different now than it ever was. Stop being a drama queen.

That won't ever happen, that is part of being Ronaldo i'm afraid. Everything he does will be looked at to death but he is mentally a strong lad and he has shown great character in the past so i don't think people scrutinising his every gesture will affect the lad at all.

The only thing Ronaldo can do to shut people up is perform. But performing for Ronaldo now comes with massive pressure to perform brilliantly all the time. He declared himself the best player in the world. The english media and pundits alike say he is the best so when he doesn't perform to a very high standard or even show in a match why people call him the best people will get on his back and scrutinize his every move.

So far this season he has performed nowhere near his best and you can see it is frustrating him.

I'd have to disagree with you there. Of course he will always be the subject of some attention. But, prior to the events of the summer, he certainly wasn't being given the intense scrutiny that he is now. He also didn't have to(or at least not to anything like the same degree) cope with situations(like this thread) where people see him having a bad day for whatever reason, and attempt to read more than they can possibly know into it.

Once he settles down, gets back to his best, there will less attention on him(or at least attention of this sort), and people won't make every 'missed clap' and so on, a portent of doom for his future with us.

You would. I watched the game with a lot of impartial football fans. Obviously you think i hate Ronaldo but even my mates thought he was poor. Could hardly beat a man, went to ground at any sign of contact and was very wasteful with the ball. (shot at every oppertunity)

The problem is that Ronaldo set a standard last season which will be hard to match and if he doesnt the conspriacy theories believe that its all to do with him not going to Real. A Ronaldo playing at 75% of his abilty is still better then most footballers around. Viva Ronaldo.

The problem is that it won't go away as long as he is at United. The events of the summer are supposed to be put to bed but still Real will continue to persue and he'll continue to say what he always has about wanting to be at Real.

As long as these things continue he'll face the same level of scrutiny.

Don't really care for off-field distractions for the moment but judging Ronaldo only on pitch form he is still below par that's for sure. But a bit of light under the tunnel in that he worked his socks off today and he looked a lot better against Celtic than against West Brom.

And that is all I care about ------ with no pre-season and an ankle operation he is doing pretty well

How many underpar performances can be put down to his lack of pre-season and ankle operation? How many games before he doesn't have excuses for under par performances?

Just curious, he's played how many now 8-9-10?

He was up against two of the slowest full backs in scotland, he really should have left them both on their arses. The only time i seen him really skin a man was when he did his little heel flick inside and Robson totally bought it.

FV, why are you so desperate to bring Ronaldo down? and obsessively at that.

From guardian,
Five reasons why Cristiano Ronaldo might be looking so glum at the moment:

1 Annoyed that Dimitar Berbatov and Wayne Rooney are scoring all the goals these days

2 Confused by a report that George Osborne solicited a donation from a Russian billionaire while on a yacht in Corfu. Are yachts now uncool?

3 Is not sure that Manuel Centeno's silver in body-board rescued Portuguese pride in last week's World Surfing Games

4 Scared by photograph of yeti footprint; worried it may make its abominable way into his Cheshire garden if it gets too cold

5 Furious that Portugal will guarantee savings only up to €100,000. That's less than a week's wages

I'm not desperate to bring him down. I judge him on his performances. He's acted like a twat but that doesn't really bother me. I firmly believe in credit where credit's due but Ronaldo seems to get credit for nothing and less than nothing from alot of fans. If he isn;t up to standards i'll happily say so, and if he performs brilliantly i'll happily say so.

How could someone who has it so in for Ronaldo firmly believe he should win the world player of the year award?

Fanboys as dippersripper would say.

Dippersripper if believing that Messi is better than Ronaldo makes me a fanboy then so be it.

This is about right.
The rest is just Dunphy-style supposition and agenda.

Here's a more lengthy, yet entirely accurate, opinion on how Ronaldo played last night.

Cristiano Ronaldo still striving to get back up to warp speed
Cristiano Ronaldo is not the type to stay in the shadows for long, to play second or third fiddle in a strikeforce of stars, even if the lead role is being taken by a player hitting new peaks of spell-binding form.

Wayne Rooney has managed that of late, first for his country, now for his club, to render Ronaldo’s steady search for something more in keeping with his marvellous reputation slightly less urgent than it might otherwise have been.

Try as you might, though, it is very difficult to divorce Ronaldo’s present fortunes from the unseemly stuff that marred Manchester United’s summer, when their top scorer did his very best to fulfil his 'dream’ of joining Real Madrid.

As a result, it’s going to be fascinating studying the winger this season just to see if there’s any difference, not so much in his prodigious goalscoring output (another 42 goals is surely asking too much), but in the body language of a player whose heart might still pine for a move to Spain, no matter what his manager might say to the contrary.

Still, Ronaldo isn’t going anywhere in the near future. For him, it’s more about gaining match practice after an ankle injury requiring surgery delayed the start to his own campaign.

Missing the whole of pre-season, as any professional will vouch, is the worst way to prepare for 10 months of hard graft. Forever playing catch-up, it is amazing how long it takes to reach top speed.

Tuesday night’s Champions League tie with Celtic, then, represented just another building block on the road to full match fitness. It was a chance to get more action under his belt against opponents unlikely to offer a whole lot of resistance.

That was how it turned out, too. Initially lining up on the right wing in United’s overtly aggressive attacking formation, Ronaldo briefly threatened to humiliate Lee Naylor, Celtic’s backtracking left-back.

All the familiar traits were present: the lightning-quick stepovers, the swivelling of hips and, of course, that old favourite – looking one way before nonchalantly nudging the ball the other.

Warming to the task, a couple of decent shots threatened Artur Boruc’s goal before an inswinging corner by United’s No 7 indirectly led to Dimitar Berbatov’s opening goal.

With Celtic’s resistance dwindling, the Portuguese flier became increasingly involved as the game wore on. He had already let fly to no avail with one trademark free-kick in the first half, and when another chance arrived after the break his aim proved much better from 25 yards out.

Taking three deliberate steps back, standing square on to the ball, arms hanging by his side, Ronaldo then produced one of those dipping, swerving shots that goalkeepers find so awkward to handle. That said, Boruc should have done a lot better than to pat the ball back into Berbatov’s path.

After 82 minutes Sir Alex Ferguson had seen enough, withdrawing his player to widespread applause. Not the kind, mind, that has greeted Ronaldo in the past. There’s still work to be done, you suspect, on that particular score, before he can earn such unconditional adulation.

Actually, it isn’t unreasonable to wonder if that unswerving support will ever fully return. Because looking at United’s fearsome options in attack, seeing how much Berbatov now brings to the party alongside a flying Rooney, seeing how well Nani is progressing on the opposite flank, Ronaldo’s input, while still very welcome, no longer looks quite so crucial to the side.

Not the bit in bold and bear in mind this piece was written by an ex-pro. Makes perfect sense to me.
