Manchester United vs Arsenal

O'Shea instead of Rafael is my only concern.

Good midfield though, getting on top of Fabregas is the key to stopping Arsenal and I think Fletcher and Anderson have the energy to do that.

10 years on from Villa Park....

I hope it's every bit as epic, and with the result favouring us once more.

This team seems to suggest that Ronaldo will play on the left, (robbing us of the chance to see him attack Gibbs) if we adopt a 4-4-2, with Fletch on the right, unless Anderson starts there, which seems unlikely. Otherwise it might be Rooney from the Left and Ronnie from the right, but as Tevez has been picked makes it seem unlikely that we wouldn't leave Tevez upfront alone. Im confused.

It's nights like this when I wish I wasn't a stingy bastard and had Sky.

Anderson to score?

It wouldn't be a United game without someone saying it.

Poor lad, he looks like he cramps up every time he tries a shot. If just stopped blasting and tried to place the shots he'd probably do better.

Probably 4-3-3 like Moscow (Fletcher Anderson and O'Shea instead of Brown Scholes and Hargreaves).

Or it could be more 4-4-2 with Fletcher and Ronaldo out wide

Strongest bench I've seen for a long time.

It's got 4-3-3 chizzled all over it.

-------------------- Van Der Sar -------------------
O'Shea -------- Ferdinand --- Vidic --------- Evra
------------ Fletcher -- Anderson -- Giggs --------
---- Ronaldo -------- Berbatov ----------- Rooney

I'm torn between Anderson and Carrick for the middle of the midfield but I'll go Anderson for his presence and giant arse.

Bench: Foster, Brown, Evans, Scholes, Carrick, Tevez, Park.

I was close, just replace Giggs with Carrick and Berba with Tevez.

We've gone for a very hardworking team.

Obviously going to close them down and put them under a lot of pressure on the ball.

I can't help but feel this is the wrong decision.

Although it minimises their threat (they generally play through the middle)
It doesn't exploit their weaknesses.

Arsenal are vulnerable down the flanks and in the air.

A team with a lot of width (like in the fa cup game last season) would have bypassed their midfield and you could have seen us demolish them.

Conservative option by Fergie.

I would have played Ronaldo and Nani on the wings with Berba and Rooney in the middle.

Cannot believe Giggs isn't starting.

I can't believe he is persisting with Fletcher. FFS

Translation: I know feck all about football and am questioning one of the greatest if not the greatest manager ever seen.

This team is very similar to last season's fa cup team. Replace Nani with Cronaldo

You'd think Berbatov would be more suited to the central role of 3 forwards than Tevez, due to his ability to hold up the ball (far) better and win headers, but Fergie must prefer energy and pressuring their defence than that tonight.

The energy is of course be a factor yes, but tactically let's not forget what that front 3 did for us last season. :)

I feel the same.

Hate playing 1st leg at home, we always do this. Atleast when you play at home second leg you not what you have to do.

Still, I reckon Tevez, Rooney, Ronaldo, Anderson and Carrick have enough to hound Arsenal all night. If we get 1 I'd hate to see us sit back on it.

Fergie said "1-0 is a very good result for us"...I reckon with Arsenals defence we should be aiming much higher.

Yeah o'shea Has no experience at all In big games and europe let's throw in Rafael and see How He does not a gamble at all.Same every game, the team Has been picked have some faith ffs.

shhh... now watch fletch and oshea be our motm at the end of the night :p

Like the selection was worried one of anderson or fletcher would be dropped but with carrick also it hopefully won't let the gunners breathe much in midfield and get the likes of ronnie, rooney on the ball more.

I know, that was my initial thought. But it seems wierd, Tevez upfront with Rooney on the left just doesn't sound right. Would have made more sense if it was Berba starting instead of Tevez. But I guess im forgetting all the success we had last season playing like this, so Ill just shut my mouth and watch from now on.

Reason i am happy to see both Fletcher and Anderson play is because surely if we do revert to a 442 then Anderson will be the most likely to go on the left so Ronaldo can go up against Gibbs and have Carrick, Fletcher in the middle.

My only fear about today is if Gibbs has a good game against Ronaldo every Asnl fan will never shut up about it, if they were smart enought they would try and make a song up about it!

Exactly.

We seem to be targetting that exact scoreline.

Hopefully the hounding of them will be enough.

God knows with the creative talent in that midfield that if any of the top three have their shooting boots on, we could definitely score a few, however your point is a good one; it really depends what mentality they have tonight.

I'm disappointed that Nani isn't even on the bench, and that Berbatov and Giggs aren't starting....but Fergie often gets these games spot on, like at Chelsea this year.

I wouldn't bet against a thrashing.
