The moment the state owns everything (and thus excludes the private individual from any meaningful stake in the country) it becomes the classic case of absolute power corrupting absolutely.

Soviet Russia and Maoist China are examples of communism and single party states.Henriatic England a Monarchy and we have state ownership of several industries at the moment in the UK without feeling the dread hand of dictatorship. There is nothing essentially undemocratic about socialism. State ownership of businesses can be argued against on efficiency grounds but it is not like capitalism offers a perfect record or solution.

He didn't say all of it under state ownership, did he? I don't know how far he goes, but I consider myself a bit a socialist, and I prefer the system we have in Norway. The government has a majority stake or at least a big stake in some of our biggest companies, like Telenor and StatoilHydro. Amazingly (!) we've done quite well. We're one of the wealthiest nations in the world, and one of the freest.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the ID card idea put forward in the UK not a long time ago? Why, you'd think it would happen in the socialist bastion of Norway instead of the good conservative United Kingdom. Admittedly Norway isn't entirely socialist, "by the book", but compared to most of Western Europe we certainly are.
You'd do well to not equate Socialism with Communism. They are not the same. I don't want a communist society by any means, but a little bit of modern socialism has done wonders.

Eh? I can't only assume you don't understand the concept of Social Justice. state ownership and social justice are, of course not incompatible. On the contrary, they are mutually dependent.

How so? State Ownership inevitably means (a) higher taxes (inevitably leading to greater taxes for the richer), and (b) standardised public services for the public regardless of income. In doing this, state ownership clearly redistributes income from the top wage earners to the bottom wage earners.
There is a massive flaw in that reasoning. The richest in society have the means and cunning to avoid excessive taxes. The labor government in the 70s had super tax, but during that time the richest 5% paid less tax than under Thatcher.
Tax revenues from the top 5% will start to shrink under the current tax policies because they will start deferring income or finding loopholes.

Obviously I think Thatcher was hugely detrimental to the development of a sense of community in this country of mine and for that we are now reaping the social problems of a confused "me" society with all its concomitant governmental issues.
That is not an arguement against progressive tax, its an arguement for forcing the rich to pay their fair share.
The "rich" have the means to exploit the loopholes or simply move away from the UK. During the super tax years bands didn't tour the UK because the taxation was too high. Do we want to tax the best footballers out of teh country as well.
A taxation system has to be fair to be successful. During the Thatcher years the top 5% of earners paid a larger percentage of the total tax revenues yet the tax rates were lower.
I couldn't give a flying feck about footballers, rockbands, somethings are more important. And it doesn't matter how little the rich are asked to contribute, they'll still try and squirm out of it, always have always will. As i pay 40% on the pittance (relatively) that I earn, how is a top rate of 50% unfair?

Used them as an example of why punitive tax rates do not help the average man. Wealthy people have ways of moving money to get the best tax breaks possible. I know several people that have moved abroad after selling businesses to avoid UK taxes.
The only thing that is important is how much the government spends. If they spend too much taxes go up, and as taxes go up the wealthy flee, and that pushes the tax burden on the poor sods that are on PAYE. Simply saying tax the rich does not ultimately help the working classes, it actually has the complete opposite effect in the long run.
So people say. But I think the car has had as big a negative impact on community.
