"Classic" Movies That You Just Don't Get

The Fisher King - absolute bollocks I'm shocked I actually got to the end of it - one of the worst movies I've seen

The same for Moulin Rouge - people kept on about McGregors singing - it was as pants as the rest of it (Ewan McGreggor's overated imo)

Agree that Fargo was thoroughly overated

Sleepy Hollow - we lasted 45 minutes and the abysmal acting from the girl (whats her name Nina Ricci I think) actor was so irritating we left - the missus was dragging me out !

Dead Poets Society - I love some of Williams stuff but that no thanks

Yep the English Patient too

Face Off and Gone in 60 seconds - two Cage movies that should have ended after 60 secs :D - absolute shite

Naked Lunch - dire

The latter Alien movies - complete bunkum - as were the latter Jaws films although fking hilarious they were so poor

God when you think about it there are some diabolical crimes against celluloid about are'nt there ?

Do you really perceive all of those movies to be "classics?"

Heat, by michael mann

utter tripe for 2hr and 10mins, then a great gun scene right at the end, but not enough to save the movie for me!

It wasn't drivel. Just not as good as the book which is a modern classic.

Caddyshack: not very funny
Shawshank Dedemption: Decent film but nowhere near as good as people now seem to think
Forrest Gump: Good fun film if you accept it on that level
Memento: Good but perhaps a bit too clever and self satisfied for its own good.
Pulp Fiction: Excellent fun and it has aged well.
Road to Perdition: Did anyone actually think this was a good film?
The Fisher King: I haven't seen it since it came out but I seem to remember enjoying it quite a bit.
Moulin Rouge: Despite it many and varied flaws I somehow didn't totally hate this film. Dunno why.
Fargo: Excellent, loved it.
Sleepy Hollow: zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Dead Poets Society: Enjoyed it at the time but I haven't seen it since.
The English Patient: Rubbish
Face Off and Gone in 60 seconds: Utter and complete rubbish
Godfarther 1: Very very good indeed.
Godfather 2: Best film ever made.
Apocalypse Now: A close second (not Redux)
Crash: Oscar winner for film of the year? Get the F*** out. Patronising, silly, obvious and overly long. Hate hate hate.
Superbad: As funny as bad AIDS. The advert clips were funnier than the film. Even the clips themselves weren't funny in the film itself.

Shocked to see the likes of The Godfather, Fargo, Pulp Fiction and The Usual Suspects getting mentioned. All fecking class films.

Maybe "classic" only exists in the mind. If you like it, it's classic for you.

And Salvo usually hates good films. If he loves a film it's probably not very good. He'll agree with me, I'm sure.

I agree, I can't figure out the fuss behind a lot of films regarded as good.

Plus, I also admit to liking Saw. And Shawshank Redemption.

Weirdo. Those are some of the best movies ever.

Maybe.

More movies; Lawrence of Arabia, as already mentioned. To Kill a Mockingbird (probably my favourite work of fiction till date, the book). The Kill Bill series. Saving Private Ryan.

I know it's not a "classic" but 9:10 to Yuma bored the pants off me. Never seemed to get going bar the last 10 minutes.

Also i suppose this is just a generation gap, the exorcist. When i finally got round to seeing it, a documentary preceeded it saying that people died of heart attacks in the cinema when watching this film, fled the cinema in terror etc. I watched it and didn't find very scary at all, but then again that is more than likely down to me watching more modern horror films that make this look very dated.

Ah yes, that old chestnut. They peddle the same line of bullshit for a lot of horror movies.

The Blair Witch Project, is probably the last one I recall inspiring that kind of hype. It turned out to be a pile of shit, too.

I thought the whole premise/characters didn't ring true (the flied lice sequence killed it stone dead tho'). Big let down since Copolla's other movie the Virgin Suicides was excellent.

I'd put it down to escapism. To be honest, it didn't bother me. I just loved the pacing of the film. It reminded me of WKW's work - not that it was anywhere near as good as WKW's best work. Dunno, maybe I liked the idea of finding Scarlett in Tokyo. Who knows eh.

Sleepy Hollow - we lasted 45 minutes and the abysmal acting from the girl (whats her name Nina Ricci I think) actor was so irritating we left - the missus was drag

I loved Sleepy Hollow. The acting, especially by Mr Depp was over the top perhaps even cheesy but it helped make the film feel a bit surreal. I wouldn't say it was classic, though, but it was a good film.

Citizen Kane has dated and is to be admired rather than enjoyed these days. That's not true of all old B&W movies, The Third Man for example, can be watched on its own terms.

I've recently watched a lot of old B&W (English)films. Streetcar Named Desire, The Hustler, Sunset Blv(my fav of the era, probably), The Manchurian Candidate, Seconds, most of Billy Wilder's stuff, Modern Times, City Lights, Dial M for Murder, Rebecca, Dr Strangelove were all brilliant.

I agree, I can't figure out the fuss behind a lot of films regarded as good.

.

Saw has to be one of the shittest films ever made.

Blade Runner is good, but not amazing.

WTF?!?! lol It's a great movie.

Mulholland Dr. - Had a lot of people talking about how great it was, but it took me 4 tries just to get through the whole thing, and it didn't even hold my interest the last time. Although it did have a lovely scene with the leading ladies.

Apocalypse Now
The Deerhunter
The Shining
Mulholland Drive
Donnie Darko
Papillon
2001 Space Odyssey
Chainsaw Massacre
Fight Club
Taxi Driver
Godfather
Devils Rejects
Usual Suspects
The Departed

Too many to mention

I agree with these two.

Usual Supsects had a great twist in the end but was overall a pretty average movie.

I thought The Departed was a bad remake, can't understand all the praise it's gotten.

I agree with Donnie Darko, and I absolutely hate The Untouchables.

Great film

Bought it in the bargain bin the other day. One of those films that I have fond memories of as a kid. My 9 year old loves it too :nervous:

The music sounds great at the start of Metallica gigs too !

Fair enough, I just found it boring. Never really got into it, and i usually don't mind it if a film is a bit slow paced. Maybe it was just the mood of the film that didn't appeal to me. I was disappointed because I thought I would like it.

Apocalypse Now... not at all bad but nowhere near as good as it's made out to be.

I've bleated about this before. Had to sit through the 4 hour redux when I was in High School and it bored me to tears.

Visually stunning but it was as slow and lumbering as Heart of Darkness, which is also one of my most hated books of all time.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest..

What drivel that was.

I thought it was a decent movie but it really is difficult to understand its message without reading the book, which I hadn't at the time.

The second most laborious pile of wank I've ever sat through. Eraserhead was first.

Pretty good summary of classic movies that I also consider to be overrated, although Godfather being there is mental (IMO, and such).

The other one I'd differ on is Taxi Driver. I hated it on first viewing but it was on the list in a Cinema Studies course I took in first year and after a bit of context-setting reading, the second viewing was much better.
