"Classic" Movies That You Just Don't Get

And Salvo usually hates good films. If he loves a film it's probably not very good. He'll agree with me, I'm sure.

There are so many, some already mentioned.

The entire Indiana Jones series, The Big Lebowski, Scarface, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Rebecca, Das Boot, Vertigo, Three Colors: Red, The Conversation are the ones that come from the top of my mind. Sure there are many more.

Weirdo. Those are some of the best movies ever.

As for others - Memento is one of the best films of the last decade. I'd argue that Following is almost as good, if not on par with it. They're just so well made - and different.

Memento was a fecking amazing piece of work. No similar film will even come close to its style for quite some time, it was unique. It's also quite underrated, so im not sure why it's popped up on this thread a few times! Shawshank Redemption only gets so much rave because it's consistently #1 on IMDB whose voting system is extremely flawed. But it was a decent movie with a good message.

I watched 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' for the first time, quite recently. I have to say, I was underwhelmed.

Didn't live up the hype, in my opinion.

I'd agree with that. I also have never been able to sit through 'A Clockwork Orange' in one sitting for the same reason.

Must be something about Kubric. I can appreciate his style but something about his movies leaves me a bit cold *

* bar 'The Shining' which is excellent and still freaks me out.

Arrrrgh that actually pains me to read that. Love both the novel and the film, but each to their own I suppose

I'm gonna say something controversial.....shoot me down if you must

but....every film ever made in black and white.

Yeah, that is a ridiculous statement. Does that also include modern black and white films? If so, watch Ed Wood.

I'd have to go along with those saying 2001: A Space Odyssey. I want to like it but I just can't. Terribly boring film.

I know a few people like that.. I do remember about 4-5 years ago I had never watched a film in black and white and the first few I watched I didn't enjoy to much, but once I got used to their style I fell in love with them.

I enjoy most of the popular classics but two highly regarded films off the top of my head I don't like would be M which I just couldn't get in to and Grapes of Wrath which made me think I'd rather be living in the depression than watching a movie about it.

Seconded.

This one's gonna get me hounded from the thread but...The Godfather.

People who kill people, get killed. Big fecking whoop.

Dammit this is the only post I just couldn't resist quoting... You are mental!!!!!

The Bridges of Madison County
The English Patient

*removes flak jacket*

Yes, it was a sweeping statement. Since I made it I've thought of 3 black & white films that I like

Schindlers List
It's A Wonderful Life
Raging Bull

In all honesty, I think the problem I have with certain 'classic' old films is that the acting style is so different from todays movies that they disengage me as a viewer.

I'm sure todays films will look just as dated in 50 years. Especially with the abundance of cgi being used.

Scarface. So many better movies out there, and Al Pacino's acting in this was ordinary at best IMO. Liked the "Say hello to my little friend" bit though.

I would agree with this. Though I have seen it that many times I am probably just bored of it.

Indeed. Love both Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, although I'd rate the latter one as slightly better, which will be controversial in many eyes.

I've never see Reservoir Dogs, never got around to it, will give it a go when I get a chance though.

No Country for Old Men

Good film, dut it dragged on and on, and tried too hard to be too profound in my view. Certainly wasn't oscar worthy...wouldn't be in the cohens top 5 for me, probably not even top 10, regardless of djemba djemba

Anchorman.

Though I feel this is more applicable for a 'most overrated' thread. But the way people kept banging on about it when it came out made me think I was missing something.

It just wasn't that funny, bar a few select moments.

Nearly as shite as Caddyshack.

Citizen Kane

as a story I'm with ye. overrated. but as a cameraman it was a groundbreaker and is stunning in some of the things it did

Definitely agree about that one. I remember seeing a list that ranked it as the greatest movie ever so I watched it and was incredibly underwhelmed. I wasn't alive when it was released so I can't comment on how groundbreaking the camera shots were, but as far as the plot is concerned I don't care for it.

Buy yourself a new sled, you rich motherfecker.
