James Milner is top 4 material.

I also think he's better than average now. He would probably get in the squads of the Top 4, but not the starting lineup.

I'm sick of all this "big four" crap. And the above statement is meaningless when you think of toss like Lucas, Bendtner and Carvalho.

Why the hell would I want to dream about him? He's looked a liability for Chelsea but in hindsight I suppose Mikel would have been a better example.

Scored an absolute cracker tonight at Sunderland, he's in a rich vein of form at the moment. I'd be very surprised if Capello doesn't take him to the world cup next year.

Disappointing. OK for a Next-4 club (see Young, Lennon, SWP et al).

Don't know about that Peter. Is there any chance we're setting the bar too high for what a 'top four' player is? I mean I know I'd rather Milner than Kuyt, Malouda, Park or Nani right now...

Aston Villa look like they could break Top 4, so he doesn't need to go anywhere. He is already top 4 material anyway.

I think Kuyt's a good T4 squad player, I wouldn't have any of the others.

Kuyt is a terrible wide player in my opinion. Or at least his form this season has been dire.

Yet Park played 25 league games last year for the Champions. I think Milner could do a similar job for a big club. I think he'd be good enough for a squad role.

Milner would be a useful squad player for the top 4, because he's versatile, he does most things reasonably well, is physically sound and is tactically disciplined. He wouldn't be good enough to get in any top four team apart from Liverpool where, if they had the sorts of players they should at their level, he'd be a sub anyway.

Thought he was the best midfielder on view when The Geordies got a draw at Old Trafford first game last season...and I thought he was the best player in Villa's win on Saturday..he certainly doesnt lack bottle for the big games...I wouldn't mind him in our squad at all.

You misunderstand me. I don't mean they've had their day. I mean they have their day about 5 times a season ie not enough.

Aaaah, sorry mate, I see what you mean.

It seems like they've all had a standout season though, and then tapered off... this is Milners taper off year, if that makes sense.

He is top 4 material when you look at some of the average squad players in the top 4, like Eboue/Lucas etc, but is he good enough to start for any of the top 4 teams? No.

Sure he could. Look at who starts for some of those big four teams. He could easily challenge Kuyt and Valencia for their spot. And Arsenal have no genuine winger, just a bunch of attacking mids that cna play wide but more so cut in than anything. Chelsea is the only one I don't see him fitting in because of their diamond formation.

I am not saying anything about him being top 4 quality or not but:

We should have signed him instead of Alan Smith in 2004.. But I have the luxury of hindsight to know that we got Rooney in that window too..

Villa have got Downing, Milner and Young - all good PL players who have their day but just aren't the real deal.

While I agree about Downing, there seems to be a stubbornly sweeping opinion that virtually none of the standout players of teams outside the Top Four™ are good enough. Good enough for what? For United's annual quintuple credentials? Perhaps not.

The dominance of these four teams is there for all to see, but neither of these teams, or squads rather, are perfect. They're basically the best collectives (and the best managers, you obviously could argue).

Not ALL great players play for the greatest teams. I don't think Milner or Young would embarass themselves for any of the top four teams to tell you the truth. Liverpool could certainly do with em.

Meh, I'm just rambling. But this my opinion, more or less.

Fiddlesticks.

He's getting better and better and is effective without being one of those players that relies on pace. Probably not good enough to be a regular starter for us but I'd certainly have him in the squad, especially when you consider our squad players are Nani and Park. Milner is better than those 2 imo.

RW i'd say, although Villa will utilise him more in a centre mid role now

He's versatile and strong on the ball, would be a squad player in all the top 4 teams.

villa have a good shout of getting in the top 4 so obviousley he is tope 4 material...

would get in the liverpool side as well...

probably get in the city side...

probably get in the totenham side

and given our last couple of performances i imagine he would be getting a game for us right now as well...
