Danny Welbeck

Not a good move, IMO. Unless someone is leaving (Jones being the most likely), Danny's probably going to be fourth choice up front, and may have to settle for being a backup winger.

He'll be closer to getting a game there than here, to be fair.

It doesn't really matter how close he is, he needs to be playing 40 games a season, IMHO.

He'll play not far off that with Sunderland, maybe, but probably a good amount of those will be 15 minutes cameos from the bench. Better than what he'll have here, but I'm sure he could have been sent somewhere that he'd be first choice.

Oh well, guess I'll have to trust SAF's judgement on this.

But how closer? And does it outweight him playing with world class players every day?

I personally can't see why we would loan him him out to Sunderland to be fourth choice, Fergie must have gotten some kind of promise that Welbeck is going to get plenty of games.

I'm assuming Welbeck will expected to get a reasonable amount of games on the wing aswell as up front, otherwise I really can't see Fergie agreeing to this deal. So long as he get a fair few starts, it should turn out to be a good loan deal for him.

Best I can think is Sunderland are planning to sell Jones and Welbeck will play along side Bent and Campbell will continue out wide - or maybe Welbeck more out wide and Campbell with Bent.

Whatever the case is - it's probably reasonable to assume some kind of discussions were held to give SAF confidence that he'll get some number of games or even a loan back to Preston might have been better.

Sunderland is a bad move. Assuming all their strikers stay put, he's most likely going be 4th choice at a mid table club. He might as well have stayed with us if he wants that. Bent and Jones are certainly gonna be picked in front of him, don't forget Fraizer Campbell who had a decent end to the season. Can't see why Bruce would want Welbeck. Sunderland go for the 4-4-2 so Welbeck can't play on the wing there. Odd move imo, we'll see how it pans out for him.

Thing is though Wayne, Fergie will have known what the situation was at Sunderland, will no doubt have spoken to Bruce about it and what his intentions are with the loan. I can't imagine him giving it the okay unless he was sure this would be of benefit to Welbeck, afterall, Fergie's said publicly that the reason he wants to loan Danny out is so that he can play regularly in the premiership to aid his development.

I really do think that him having to work hard to get in a decent side is better than expecting to make the line up every week in a crap one, as well. If he plays as well as he can, he'll be of Campbell certainly. Plus, he's more than capable on the wing as well, although I'd prefer him to be up front.

He's got everything you need to be a very, very good striker in my eyes, fingers crossed he'll demonstrate that.

Campbell has done very well in pre-season for them as well (scoring wise - not read on play wise) - a hattrick and then a goal in the next game. It's a strange move for on paper as it doesn't look like he'll get that many games but, the intent is to get him games so reason says something must have been discussed for him to go there.

I thought it would of been better for Wellbeck to go to Wigan and for Cleverly to go to Sunderland

I'm hoping this means Jones is moving on, which would leave Campbell and Danny fighting to play alongside Bent, but would be a strange one as Bent & Campbell are quite similar players (Campbell much better link up play, Bent better scorer)

I think if Welbeck is utilized on the wing he'll do a better job than Campbell. He did look equally strong on both wings in preseason and played pretty well up top too. I think his variety will give whom ever gets him on loan many options.

Also does Reid start on the left for Sunderland? As I thought he was out with an injury for a while.

i think this is a good move for Danny and UTD

as far as the competition at sunderland goes i think its a good thing too, yes danny needs starts but he also needs to earn his place. Jones and Campbell may start the season ahead of him in the pecking order but i've seen nothing from those two to suggest Danny cant force himself ahead of them and lets be honest if he's to make it at united he needs to be better than the likes of them. Jones for instance can't hit a f'kin barn door, Danny would comfortably outscore him if given the same game time imo

I also fully believe Bruce will pick the most deserving players, not just his own - this was the problem with Rossi at Newcastle because he didnt belong to them he was only ever used as a last resort back-up. If Danny earns his place at Sunderland he'll keep it and play regularly and i think he'll do just that

Cant wait to see him tested regualrly in the PL

Not a good move, wont play ahead of Campbell who himself wont play ahead of Bent

Sunderland fans aren't really happy/excited about getting him. They seem to think he'll be 4th choice.

Really does seem a bit pointless. Guess we'll have to trust Fergie on this one.

I find that a lot of our own fans don't even appreciate Welbeck's talent, so it's unsurprising that Sunderland's don't either. I am quietly confident that he'll surprise a lot of people with how he gets on. He's a much better player than Campbell.

the lack of faith in Welbecks chances of playing at Sunderland are surprising to me

Welbeck is already better than Campbell imo and probably Jones too, though Jones is used in a specific way - Danny certainly has more goals in him than Jones

Besides we're all assuming Sunderland will play 442 whereas i wouldn't be surprised to see them move to the en vogue 433/451 with Welbeck and Campbell being the wider players in the 3/5, leaving Bent and Jones to play through the middle. This would be ideal for us as its the system we play. Jones lost a lot of favour there last year i really wouldn't be surprised to see him start the season sat firmly on the bench with Danny and Campbell playing either side and Bent up top. Could be a very dangerous front 3 that

If he can't impose him self on the Sunderland team then the loan is a good move and we have learned from it.

I do understand why everyone thinks he won't break into the team, don't you think he is good enough to rejoin United next season?

If he is surely he is better than Campbell, Bent and Jones.

Also I think he will learn a lot about his position from the likes of Bent and Jones. Different kind of strikers to what we possess.

If that's the case then aren't Sunderland going to be a bit short on strikers?

Bent
Welbeck
Campbell (sometimes played on the right)

They have a young un, who was on loan at Leicester last season, Wagthorn or summat. Leicester wants him back on loan, but Bruce wants to keep him at Sunderland.

It's not a case of Welbecks quality. Its whether or not Bruce would want to play Welbeck ahead of Campbell, Bent and Jones would are on the Sunderland books. Why would Bruce want to help develop Welbeck ahead of his own players? Thats always the problem with loans.

I think he'll do ok at Sunderland and will probably get more games there than if he had stayed at United. I can see Welbeck and Bent forming a pretty useful partnership.

If Jones is out of the picture, I think they'll start with Bent and Campbell up front, Riveros or Richardson left wing, Cana and Cattermole in the middle, Malbranque right. Welbeck will probably start as a sub, but should see some game time, and could get in either up front or on the right wing if there's an injury or he impresses enough to oust one of the above.

Richardson is being used at left back.
