CHARITY SHIELD: Chelsea vs. Manchester United; Sun 8 August 2010

He plays Spain in Mexico, probably will miss the Newcastle game if he plays this one.

He will play a part on Sunday against Chelsea, it's a competitive match but not that important (not compared to a league match anyway). Perfect to test him out and see what he's really made of in English football.

It's basically their first choice team.

Cech is injured. They don't have a nailed on right back. Drogba is not fully fit.

Branislav Ivanović made team of the season, he'd normally play there at rightback if either Carvalho or Alex were fit to play alongside Terry unless Bosignwa was fit to play there perhaps, with Ivanovic inside Ferriera is the obvious option to play rightback here. Would've thought Youssi or Zhirkov could've been a contender for a start here, but I suppose Kalou perhaps needs the game more.

Fair dos. Some of the positions have been changed, but I'd say that 8 of the players were first choicers last season. And Ivanovic was originally a centre back. With Bosingwa returning this season, there's a good chance that Ivanovic will be competing for a central defensive berth. I don't much rate Alex and Carvalho isn't the player he was. Good chance they'll go Terry-Ivanovic in a lot of games this season.

Djemba-Djemba had a great Community Sheild game against Arsenal.

If Ivanovic were to hold down the centreback role, then who would play rightback in Bosignwa's absence if Ferreria were injured too ... Essien?

You're getting tiresome mate.

I'm a proponent of playing your best players in their best positions. Sincerest apologies if this revelation irritates you.

The result doesn't really bother me, for me this signifies the start of football again this season and thus I am excited !

Who's with me !?

Rooney and Owen to both play 45 minutes in this according to SSN, sorry if its been posted.

Fabio and Rafael both "doubtful" for the game according to SSN. They've both had food poisoning.

Shame for Fabio, with Evra a few weeks away he could have got a game.

fergie said that after the airtricity game
not match fit yet

valencia has trained more so he is ready

The community shield game has been on Sky Sports for as long as I can remember.

Didn't it used to be on ITV before Sky signed it up?

I think it did Plan M, but while Setanta was operating they had it for 08/09 when we played Portsmouth.

Also, on the injury/absence front, the Da Silvas both took part in open training today, as did Michael Carrick and Patrice Evra although we know pretty much for sure he won't feature tomorrow.

Training squad: van der Sar, Kuszczak; Neville, Evra, Brown, Smalling, Vidic, Fabio, Rafael, O'Shea, J Evans; Giggs, Park, Carrick, Nani, Scholes, Fletcher, Valencia, Gibson, Cleverley; Owen, Berbatov, Rooney, Hernandez, Macheda

Just sat and watched the 2008 CL final on MUTV. What memories I have to say.

I know tomorrow obviously isn't as important but it is against the Chelsea rent boys. After watching that just now, it's put me right in the mood for tomorrow and the new season ahead.

Let's start the season tomorrow by smashing the cnuts. COME ON UNITED

Quite a delicious striker selection.

Any of our American friends tell me if the game will be shown stateside? I'm going to be in Tampa on Sunday.
Not seen anything advertising the game over here on the billion sports channels!

It will be on FSC at 10am EST.

I always wish the game was played with more hunger to win. I never like to see lame games, with players playing hancey fancey football. Yes, players don't want to get injured. But it's a trophy and they should want to win it nonetheless.

not that desperate for that shield trophy, more like revenge from missing out on the title to them by a single point.

Really looking forward to this one, any news on the Da Silvas?

I'm hoping Hernandez and Cleverly get on torrow, I expect we'll see Rooney for a half and Berbatov for a half.
