Had a row at work today with with two twerps who are convinced that united only bought Bebe to prove that the Glazers are giving SAF transfer funds.

Would've made far more sense to bring someone recognized like Ozil or van der Vaart at a similar price, though wages would mean they'd be twice as expensive after a transfer - better re-sale value in case of failure though so it'd kind of even itself out.

I don't think it would even begin to even itself out - the wages and extras of more established players, such as those you suggest, would quickly make the overall deal vastly more expensive than signing Bebe.

It's really not fair to compare the Bebe and VdV transfers - VdV will cost Spurs a lot. Bebe will only cost us a lot if he develops and earns new contracts. If he does that though, his potential resale value will also increase...

I've never been this excited about the prospect of watching an England U21 game before - I'm getting the tapas and cava lined up in anticipation. Well done Bebe.

Not necessarily - if Bebe's on £1m a year and van der Vaart is on £3m to £4m a year, there won't be much difference between what we're paying during the next two years IF after that two years both players are sold by the club because of failures.

Still Bebe's a safer option indeed.

Revealed: The incredible rise of a lost street kid who is now... Manchester United's new Bebe | Mail Online

If you can believe the Daily Mail, that's incredible story about Bebe. Talk about a tough upbringing. He seems a really hard worker dedicated to improving himself and if he settles he could turn out to be a diamond in the rough.

Thats a beautiful article. Anyone who has posted on this thread should read the article. No reason to believe that anything is untrue.

With Giggs, Neville & co in the dressing room and SAF and OGS in the background, I'm sure he will be well looked after at the club who will make sure he keeps his feet on the ground and that he settles. But having read that article, we should not undermine just how big a personal challenge 'settling' will be for him, let alone all the other changes we are hoping for within his game and technique.

I dont really care if he does not see competitive reserve team football til after xmas, there is no hurry, I just hope that he develops like we hope he will and that one day soon, we will have a genuinely exciting talent on our books.

What odds on him getting Owen's No 7 shirt at some point?

No time soon unless he robs it.... In any case someone else(Hernandez) will get it first

Hernandez should get it. He has real potential to make it his own. The #7 is special...i was actually surprised SAF gave it to Owen (no disrespect to Mickey, but you just don't figure he will be around more then a year or two).

What had Hernandez done in the EPL to deserve the 7 gear?

That's a very touching article and I am surprised it came from the Daily Hate. In the article Bebe's former agent says that Bebe could become better than Nani, boy wouldn't that be something.
I wish the lad well

I think Nani should take the 7 after Mickey. Would be fun to see Bebe get the 7 in the future, but its Nani for me.

The Mirror's transfer awards.

The Worst Signing Award
Winner: Bebe (Manchester United, £7m)
It may seem harsh to write a new signing off after less than a month, but then Ole Gunnar Solksjaer seemingly did just that when he pulled Bebe from his first scheduled reserve outing due to alleged technical deficiencies. Fergie has since blasted reports the young Portugeezer isn't up to scratch (well, of course he would...) but few would be surprised if the former Homeless World Cup star was looking for another new berth in the months to come.

 They expect him to adjust straight away to this huge change. Maybe this guy should have read the article in the Mail.

Oh for god's sake.

It takes a special kind of idiot to write off a young talent without ever seeing him play and label him the "worst signing of the summer" on that basis - step forward Dan Silver.

On the one hand, I hope Bebe doesn't see these things but given the obstacles the lad has obviously had to overcome already in his short life, I am actually hoping that he DOES see these things because proving people wrong is clearly something he does very well.

For that kind of article alone, I hope Bebe goes on to become one of the best players in the world and 70million United fans make copies of that article and bury Dan Silver with them.

It would be a fitting epitaph for an idiot journalist.

Wow. What a true fecking moron, not even seen him play or anything and they write him off. Seriously, do they actually not have a clue?

thats the problem with this country and the stupidity of some people. If he has a stormer against England under21 they'll shut up. If he plays poor or do play it'll continue, even though he's not match fit.

All because of one big mouthed wanker on some shitty site. People should stop buying these papers

Very good article. I read it on the way into work this morning and all you can do is wish the lad the best of luck - and some patience, it'll be great if it all works out (for him and us)

When is the U21 game? I hope he plays! :D

It's such a heart-warming story - and he sounds like such a nice kid - I just hope he goes on to have a decent career, whether or not it's with United.

When you hear about someone who lacked the love of his family when he was a kid then I wonder will they have ever have the inner self-confidence to be a really top player.

But I had similar concerns about Nani (he was basically abandoned by his parents) and he's really seem to have found another level in his game this year.

I think a really tough up-bringing can be a positive in a young footballer. As Nietzche said, "that which does not kill us..."

Don't a lot of Brazillian players come from really tough up bringings? Nani did as well as you said. Maybe not the same exact thing as Bebe but, am sure a lot of footballers have had rough upbringing that have succeeded. It can go both ways - the unfortunate childhood experiences may have made him even more mentally strong than the average Joe that had it somewhat nice. Or it could be that it that any time something goes wrong on the pitch or in training - it could cause him to lose confidence.

From the stories about how he really just started playing at 16 in organized games and that he's come so far so quick indicates that he has something that will make him succeed and overcome obstacles.

A 'tough upbringing' can often mean that their family were really poor. But they still had a family, a family which loved them. Being abandoned by your mother as a child is a pretty tough thing for any human being to get over.

Maybe fergie should have a re-think about Bebe learning english... so he wont be able to understand all the crap the mirror and the mail are writing about him...
