How Did Bebe Do For Portugal U-21?
September 3, 2010 53 Comments

Tor-Kristian Karlsen has given his frank opinion of Bebe during his match for Portugal’s U-21 against England’s U-21, where, it has to be said, Tom Cleverley was one of England’s best players.

Karlsen is a top Norwegian football consultant where transfers and scouting are concerned, particularly focussed on Dutch football.

In the first half, Bebe played up front, and this apparently didn’t suit him very well.

He gave an “underwhelming first impression” in this half, looking “static” with “very poor off the ball movement and has a heavy touch” and “makes little use of decent physique.” However, it had to be noted that Portugal were poor and Bebe got very little service.

Still, it was reported that “he’s got a decent turn of pace.”

In the second half, Bebe was given a ‘free’ wide right role and this suited him much better.

There was a “very eye catching run where he picked up ball 30m out wide right, outpaced opponent, dummied another, which followed with an effort straight at goalkeeper with left foot.” In this half he showed “excellent pace, body strength and coordination in flashes”. Apparently his “raw talent is unquestionable but he has a poor tactical understanding.”

Bebe might be most useful to us “as an impact sub”. He can “undoubtedly cause some damage when his legs are fresh and the game opens up.”

In conclusion, he is “far off full fitness yet and needs a lot of coaching. He must up his football-IQ to become a Premier League hit. If only he’d been 17 or 18…”

He's just 2 years older than that. Since when did it come to be that players can't learn and improve their understanding on the pitch after they're 18?

Lets put things to the right context. In a short period of time that can be measured in weeks, a 20 yr old had moved from a third division club who couldnt afford to pay him regularly to 2 big sides. The boy who few weeks ago lived in a homeless center and who took the bus to go to training is now representing his nation and training with Wayne Rooney. Yet the media is surprised that he looks lost?

Bebe may not have the foundations that other players of his age would have if they have trained with United for years. On the other hand he may have skills that other players dont have. One of which is the maturity to know that nothing can be taken for granted

he started playing at 16 (not counting street football)
he has a lot to learn

he wasnt signed because we expected him to be a squad player .. clearly the scouts think he can be something special (unless you think these is something shady going on.. ha)
write 2 years off his playing career .. think of him as an 18 year old and judge him on that

gill has already said he will be in the reserves this season
work in progress

i have no problems with waiting , but unfortunately the stories wont stop unless he scores a hattrick against everton next weekend

I'm sure Gill was quoted as saying we paid 9m euros. It was a TV piece at the airport on his return I think.

Haven't seen this. There are 2 numbers that have been used since the day the story broke - 7.4m pounds and 9m Euros (same amount).

The day after the story broke, it was officially announced but, the fee was listed as undisclosed. That as far as I know hasn't changed - be interested to see the actual interview. Lot of times the transcripts of interviews don't have verbatim of what was said - they ad lib and probably they threw that 9m Euros in because they have no other number.

His club said that 4 clubs had met his release fee (one being Real Madrid) and Bebe had chosen to come to United. That may not be true, but it seems fairly widely accepted that it was £7.4m and United haven't made any efforts to deny this, which might have taken some pressure of Bebe.

From their club statements and what the president has said, haven't seen any thing where they confirmed the release clause was met. President did say that the money that they are getting will help the club but, did not elaborate on the amount.

Just because we haven't denied the amount we paid doesn't mean it's correct. Lot of fees are undisclosed and journos speculate or come to an accepted amount but, you don't see clubs going out and saying - that isn't what we really paid - no clue why we chose to say undisclosed but, pointless to list it as such if they are going to confirm or deny numbers that people throw around.

If we met the release clause - why not just say it. Seems to me we've paid another amount - or perhaps structured it based on performance and appearances or even sell on percentage.

One thing for sure though as I was saying, in the absence of us saying something, the trash will make up things to sell stories. If Fergie says or doesn't say something - won't matter, the vermin are out for blood. Till we stutter in the league or something else comes up - the Bebe story is something they'll hang on to till then.

He may lack of the tactical awareness of an academy grown player but he has pace and he is built like a tank. I can see him play in the Carling cup on the flank.

I am confused why some fans always want to reduce the transfer fee reported. 'We probably only paid 50% of the reported fee with the rest based on appearances and performance".

Probably because, for better or for worse, the transfer fee is generally the yardstick used to measure the expectations and success of any signing. Thus playing the fee down can temper peoples sometimes unrealistic expectations.

What I really mean to say is tekkers, Guthrie, Modric, Harper.

Because every story ends up inserting the amount we "paid" for him. As Sharky pointed out - it's as though the price determines how fast and how good he should be instantly.

Then the comments regarding VDV or we could have got Ozil for X amount more blah blah blah.

Now that he is here - the amount we paid is the least of our concerns - focus should be on him as a player now period - not as a player that we paid Y amount for.

Would be great if Bebe made a proper impact at United and rubbed it in all these pathetic journo's faces

Not in Champions League squad,shocked....or not.

I'm neither cnut, I'm sarcastic man.

MANCHESTER UNITED new boy Bebe admits he was played out of position on his Portugal Under-21 debut.

The shock £7m signing was described as a striker on United's official website when the deal was confirmed but there has been much conjecture since as little was known about the Vitoria Guimaraes youngster.

Sir Alex Ferguson has already expressed his disgust at the amount of focus being placed on Bebe, who looks set to wear the name Tiago Dias on his shirt, as he settles into his new environment.

After being handed his first start for the Under-21 team in their clash with England, the United new boy was overshadowed by Old Trafford team-mate Tom Cleverley, who has just clinched a loan move to Wigan.

However, Bebe made one superb run and shot that produced a save out of Frank Fielding which highlighted his potential.

The player himself would rather play on the wing instead of the lone attacker he was given as he was often isolated up front.

"Clearly, I did not play in my position," he said. "I'm a winger but the coach is the boss.

"I'm here to help and represent the national team.

"We failed to score but I'm happy and, now I'm here, I hope to come back more often.

"Hearing the anthem for the national team was something that I've been waiting for a long time."

Bebe clearly has his feet on the ground since his meteoric rise to fame.

"I feel the same," he confessed. "I still have not won anything.

"There is still much to learn to become a better player."

Bebe has reportedly been left out of United's Champions League squad along with injured midfielder Owen Hargreaves.

He's under 21. So he wouldn't need to be in it would he? Thats my impression of the rule anyway.

Hmmmm, that's actually a really good point. DTguardian blows his load too soon again so...

Not much point in registering a player who isn't going to play.

The only "story" here is that a player cost £7m and didn't go straight into our squad. Which is fairly meaningless.

Positive words from Bebe. He's been put under a microscope far too soon. We need to put our protective layer around him and try to kill this premature hype and scrutiny.

Im not surprised he hasn't been included in the Champions League squad anyway. It's a bit too much exposure, too soon. This year is all about adapting to a new environment for him and sharpening up his game for English football. I don't expect him to play in much more than the domestic cup competitions this year. Nothing would please me more than to see him gradually make his critics eat their words.

No win situation really.

he's in the squad: clamour over if he'll play, expectation increased
he's not in the squad: he's rubbish, panic time.

I reckon any Bebe discussion should be banned for at least 18-months, by which point the lad will have at least had a chance. ;)

the fact people keep posting on this subject proves that there is interest in the story! I personally think its all a load of balls..the only reason its a story is because of the price tag and that Fergie personally did not scout him. I think the lad has potential in the little ive seen of him, he certainly has bags of pace.

In jan cant we add him to the squad list? Should we make it to the knockouts

I don't even think it's the price tag per se; it's that he'd only recently moved on a free transfer from a lower league Portugeuse club, and we signed him from his new club without him playing a game there

We'd be lapping that up if the Scouse signed someone in such a manner, and then the manager admitted he'd never seen him play

It's a very odd transfer, and it's been very poorly handled too

i can't ever remember an unknown player so obviously bought for his future potential being put under so much pressure

i worry for this kid if he reacts to the media - i get the impression that unless he really hits the ground running when he makes his debut he will be crucified

We'd be laughing at the scousers because they have a history of signing ridiculously crap players for stupid fees.

On the other hand, Fergie (and his scouts) are renowned for finding quality, even from unexpected sources.

So I think we can give him the benefit of the doubt, and leave Bebe alone until he's at least had a chance.

He might be the next big thing, give him a chance, I have faith in our scouts

The question mark has to be over the fact he was available for free not long before he went for 7million plus, having not played a competitive game for his new club

At what point was he scouted? Why did the club not move for him beforehand?

I think there's mass hypocrisy in this thread because I swear blind many of you giving it the 'leave him alone, give him a chance' stuff would be ripping in if it was an opposition player, especially at a rival club. Obviously you wouldn't do that for a player at your own club, but there's obviously a story here, it's a bizarre transfer, and you can understand why it's under the spotlight

Which makes it all the more crazy Fergie said what he said about having never seen him play. It's all very well berating the media for making such a big deal of the transfer, but when you're feeding them gold like that... I just don't believe a man of that experience and knowledge made such a schoolboy error!

Maybe Sir Alex said he hadn't seen him play to the media in an attempt to keep the hype around his 7 million signing to a minimal to help him get bedded into Manchester United. This signing was pretty much out of the blue, I bet he has been watching him for quite some time.

It could just be another stroke of genius from Sir Alex.
