How Did Bebe Do For Portugal U-21?
September 3, 2010 53 Comments
Tor-Kristian Karlsen has given his frank opinion of Bebe during his match for Portugal’s U-21 against England’s U-21, where, it has to be said, Tom Cleverley was one of England’s best players.
Karlsen is a top Norwegian football consultant where transfers and scouting are concerned, particularly focussed on Dutch football.
In the first half, Bebe played up front, and this apparently didn’t suit him very well.
He gave an “underwhelming first impression” in this half, looking “static” with “very poor off the ball movement and has a heavy touch” and “makes little use of decent physique.” However, it had to be noted that Portugal were poor and Bebe got very little service.
Still, it was reported that “he’s got a decent turn of pace.”
In the second half, Bebe was given a ‘free’ wide right role and this suited him much better.
There was a “very eye catching run where he picked up ball 30m out wide right, outpaced opponent, dummied another, which followed with an effort straight at goalkeeper with left foot.” In this half he showed “excellent pace, body strength and coordination in flashes”. Apparently his “raw talent is unquestionable but he has a poor tactical understanding.”
Bebe might be most useful to us “as an impact sub”. He can “undoubtedly cause some damage when his legs are fresh and the game opens up.”
In conclusion, he is “far off full fitness yet and needs a lot of coaching. He must up his football-IQ to become a Premier League hit. If only he’d been 17 or 18…”

I'm sure Gill was quoted as saying we paid 9m euros. It was a TV piece at the airport on his return I think.
His club said that 4 clubs had met his release fee (one being Real Madrid) and Bebe had chosen to come to United. That may not be true, but it seems fairly widely accepted that it was £7.4m and United haven't made any efforts to deny this, which might have taken some pressure of Bebe.
he started playing at 16 (not counting street football)
he has a lot to learn
he wasnt signed because we expected him to be a squad player .. clearly the scouts think he can be something special (unless you think these is something shady going on.. ha)
write 2 years off his playing career .. think of him as an 18 year old and judge him on that
gill has already said he will be in the reserves this season
work in progress
i have no problems with waiting , but unfortunately the stories wont stop unless he scores a hattrick against everton next weekend
If we met the release clause - why not just say it. Seems to me we've paid another amount - or perhaps structured it based on performance and appearances or even sell on percentage.
I am confused why some fans always want to reduce the transfer fee reported. 'We probably only paid 50% of the reported fee with the rest based on appearances and performance".

He's under 21. So he wouldn't need to be in it would he? Thats my impression of the rule anyway.

the only reason its a story is because of the price tag and that Fergie personally did not scout him. I think the lad has potential in the little ive seen of him, he certainly has bags of pace.
I don't even think it's the price tag per se; it's that he'd only recently moved on a free transfer from a lower league Portugeuse club, and we signed him from his new club without him playing a game there
We'd be lapping that up if the Scouse signed someone in such a manner, and then the manager admitted he'd never seen him play
It's a very odd transfer, and it's been very poorly handled too

We'd be laughing at the scousers because they have a history of signing ridiculously crap players for stupid fees.
On the other hand, Fergie (and his scouts) are renowned for finding quality, even from unexpected sources.
So I think we can give him the benefit of the doubt, and leave Bebe alone until he's at least had a chance.
The question mark has to be over the fact he was available for free not long before he went for 7million plus, having not played a competitive game for his new club
At what point was he scouted? Why did the club not move for him beforehand?
I think there's mass hypocrisy in this thread because I swear blind many of you giving it the 'leave him alone, give him a chance' stuff would be ripping in if it was an opposition player, especially at a rival club. Obviously you wouldn't do that for a player at your own club, but there's obviously a story here, it's a bizarre transfer, and you can understand why it's under the spotlight
Which makes it all the more crazy Fergie said what he said about having never seen him play. It's all very well berating the media for making such a big deal of the transfer, but when you're feeding them gold like that... I just don't believe a man of that experience and knowledge made such a schoolboy error!
Maybe Sir Alex said he hadn't seen him play to the media in an attempt to keep the hype around his 7 million signing to a minimal to help him get bedded into Manchester United. This signing was pretty much out of the blue, I bet he has been watching him for quite some time.
It could just be another stroke of genius from Sir Alex.
Another strange Tosic-esque purchase.
