Valencia CF v Manchester United

The goal against Scunthorpe suggests you're full of shit. Long live the anti Gibson bullshit though :boring:

TBF if he didnt get the odd goal I dont think he would be in the side. He is a very average mid fielder, but in a team with some players not on form or injured (Carrick, Hargreaves, Fletcher) he is in with a chance.

I hope as all of us do that he sorts his passing out abit and continues to improve.

That's unusually negative from you Pogue.

With no Scholes i'm now expecting O'Shea to play in midfield again.

We'll be fine. 0-0.

How are you expecting us to keep a clean sheet? Are valencia at home worse the fulham or everton or bolton?

I think they will score I just hope we score as well.

That teams assumes that Carrick and Rio aren't going to make it, maybe Anderson should play ahead of O'Shea (push him to rb). Loosing Valencia and Giggs really limits our options so Park will probably play even though his form has been largely unimpressive. I always prefer 442 but against a Valencia team that keeps the ball well it would be foolish to only have two central midfielders.

Scholes isn't avaliable either ... you could put Gibson and or Anderson central, or Park central with Bébé wide or something like that.

Carrick's travelled, which is the only bit of good news this morning.

If Carrick and Anderson both roll back the years and have really good games, then a midfield of Fletcher, Carrick and Anderson is actually quite decent.

Big bloody "if" though.

Not even sure if I'd prefer Carrick to Gibson for this one.

SAF says that Carrick is a "slow starter" as it is, and just coming back from injury a game like this might be beyond him. I hope not though.

Actually I'm hoping O'Shea starts in DM, which opens up RB for Rafael.

Because we will play with much more negative tactics than we did against Fulham or Bolton. We will only play with 1 up top for a start.

Agreed.

Not only quite decent, but bloody good if they are on form. As two of those are coming back from injury and the other one - our most consistent performer last year bar Rooney - has been a bit mediocre so far this campaign there are quite a few question marks over the team selection.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Gibson starting, he could give us a bit of goal threat from the centre of the pitch.

Do not want either Park or O'Shea playing centrally.

This could be an opportunity for the fantasy midfield three of Fletch, Anderson and Carrick to show they can cut it, together.

The funny thing is you look at the balance of the players for a three man central midfield:

RIGHT: Fletcher, Carrick, Gibson, O'Shea
LEFT: Anderson, O'Shea (perhaps)
CENTRE: All the above:

This would suggest if there is a three man midfield we'll see Anderson on most likely, it would also suggest that O'Shea may be on the left of a midfield three if he's played there.

They played in the semi-final Arsenal games in 2009. Not really a fantasy.

------------------------ VDS ----------------------

Brown ------ Ferdinand ------ Vidic ------------ Evra

--------- Fletcher ---- Carrick ---- Anderson --------

Nani --------------- Berbatov ------------------ Park

Brown ------ Ferdinand ------ Vidic ------------ Evra

Nani --------------- Berbatov ------------------ Park

Very good, balanced side that should see us get a 0-1.

Looks good.

It would be a bit of a risk playing both Carrick and Anderson.

I have a feeling Fergie will deploy O'Shea in midfield again.

Nah, if O'Shea's in I'm sure he'll play in a holding role, Anderson and Fletcher pushing forwards. It's basically O'Shea vs. Carrick for that position, so it depends if Carrick is fit enough.

Starting XI:-------------- Van Der Sar -----------------------
Brown ------- Ferdinand ------------------- Vidic ---------- Evra
Nani --------- Fletcher ------ Gibson ---- Anderson -------- Park
---------------------------- Berbatov --------------------------

Bench: Kuszczak, Rafael, J.Evans, O´Shea, Carrick, Hernandez, Owen

Yes, but if Anderson misses out, O'Shea is the most left leaning player and if Carrick starts, playing O'Shea left would allow Evra to get forward more and Carrick who does not thrive in wide roles to remain central. It involves O'Shea moving about a bit.

Are you suggesting we play O'Shea on the left wing?

There is 0% chance of O'Shea playing in midfield and not playing a holding role. I'd rather play Gibson.

I think you're putting way too much emphasis on this "left leaning" notion.

I can't see Carrick starting since he hasnt played at all this season. Anderson is much more likely.

Are you suggesting we play O'Shea on the left wing?

Left side of a three ... he's still the most leftish of O'Shea, Carrick and Fletcher ... Carrick is best central, though he's not an orthodox defensive midfielder. Simply requires pushing Fletcher and O'Shea forward to pressure the ball in advanced areas and dropping back to give the ball to Carrick, when they have it... a bit like other 4-5-1s do with Scholes.

There is 0% chance of O'Shea playing in midfield and not playing a holding role. I'd rather play Gibson.

Not at all, I'm sure he could but if you're playing Carrick and O'Shea I don't think the position leftsided suits Carrick's game ... maybe I'm wrong.

it be more risky playing John O'Shea anywhere near our line-up

In the light of the latest news I am fairly confident we'll play Fletcher-Anderson. The back four are obvious with Wes on the right. Nani left. Berba center. So...

-------------------back four----------
Nani---Fletcher---Carrick---???----?????
–--------------------Berba----------------

The safest is Park and O'Shea. But come on! Shouldn't we try and win!?

I say, play Park or Carrick and an attacking player. Where is Obertan? I wouldn't mind playing an out of possition forward. Say Macheda left. Or Nani left and a forward on the right wing.

Yeah yeah. I know. But I have a funny feeling Fergie will do exactly that
