Nani

Nani has scored 10 goals this year, and I know he's started 29 games this year, but does anyone know the exact number of assists?

I've updated my list from last season:

Wow, that is phenomenal. Only two losses?

Stupid linesman....

He got an assist against Pompey, he "created" one of the own goals, and the PL counts those.

What are the current odds on Nani winning player of the year? i reckon hes a great shout for that award, he's by far the stand out premier league player of 2010 in my opinion.

Doubt he has the profile for it, but based on form he's definitely up there. With people still waffling on about his consistancy and saying things like "He's just starting to show his talent now", I cant see him winning it. He'd probably need another year of the same stuff

True profile and name does seem to be paramount in this award unfortunately, and the consistency claptrap really is beyond annoying now, chris waddle was at it again on ESPN commentary the other night, "Nanis to inconsistent" "there's the good and the bad you get from Nani every week" blah blah fecking infuriating! i really wish these pundits and commentators would do a little bit of basic research before spouting the usual stereotype poppycock, Nanis been amazingly consistent for not far short of a year now, no player in this country has performed as consistently as him in this calendar year, noone.

Its amazing but you can bet Scholes for his early season form of about 3 games would be more likely to win the award if it were held tomorrow than Nani despite not producing half the goods Nani has.

On another note would anyone argue that Nani is now the best player at the club?

I consider him more vital to this team than Rooney myself, hes literally involved in nearly every goal we score and without him i dread to think how impotent our attacking play would have looked this season.

He'd be my first name on the team sheet now, hes the most important player in the team bar none, we can cope without Rooney as we're proving, we can cope without Rio or Vidic as we've shown and been forced to show time and again over the last 12-18 months, could we cope without Nani? cope maybe to strong a word but id say our attacking threat would diminish tenfold without him more so than any other player.

I am absolutely thrilled with Nani and the positive influence he is having on the team. I think he is a fundamental part of the team and has established himself as one of our most important players.

This is one of those 'What If' scenarios, but if Nani had developed into this player and showed this consistency whilst Ronaldo was at the club then it would have been simply .

However, I believe that the departure of Ronaldo was a pivotal moment in Nani's career as it allowed him to assert his influence and show his quality.

It's hard to argue with to be honest. However a fully fit and on form Wayne Rooney would be my pick for most important. When the next time that will be though? That's entirely different.

Nani has been our best player for this calendar year. If he keeps this level of performances for another year, then yes he can be considered our best player. Rooney is only 25 though, he can improve on his last season's performances. I hope so.

Just read his interveiw on sky, he's become a confident lad. Almost Ronaldo confident, which is good. Cause at that level, in that position, thats needed

Just a joy to watch these days, him and Rafael on the right have all the makings to be a truly great right sided partnership

I'd still prefer to play our best players in their natural players to ensure they perform to their best ability rather than sacrificing them to their 2nd position due to the teams limitations. Nani for me plays on the right, thats where he excels, thats where he's worldclass and thats where i'd want him if we were playing Barcelona/Chelsea/Real etc.

Ditto, i understand why people say "he can play on the left" but honestly on the left hes had one or two good games, on the right hes consistantly a threat why change a winning formula?!

Granted as he gets older its likely he will adapt to that role through experience but right now keep him on the right

Sky Sports | Manchester United News | Football | Premier League | Nani - I'm one of the best

a bold statement, the boy has made leaps and bounds though and i player i am pleased to have in the squad week in week out

nothing bold whatsoever about that statement, let's break it down shall we:

"As a player I think I'm close to being as complete as I can be," said Nani. "Now I can say I'm one of the top players in the world.

What was that stat above? 33 goals or assists in 36 matches? He's certainly our best player right now, and I'd say that United's best player is always one of the top players in the world.

"I play for the best club in the world

"and my role in the team is as a decisive player, scoring goals or setting up and so the team can win."

Go back to them stats, they back him up in all fairness.

"You have to believe in yourself and believe in your abilities on the pitch. Big games are for big players."

Good attitude.

"I want to be one of the best"

Shows that he knows there is still room for him to grow.

All in all a very fair assessment from Nani I'd say.

just need cut out his annoying diving....no need for that.

5 goals and 8 assists, bloody damn good as only a quarter of the season has gone... Let's do a bit of maths and say after the end of the season altogether he'll score 20 and have 32 assist....

Anything more than 15 for each department is already good for me... Keep up the good form Nani.

Really good to see him doing thjis well. Hope he can continue as he is our main player at moment. Just sometimes his decision making is a bit poor.

A regular and important player at one of the best clubs in the world - Nani has every right to feel he is one of the best footballers on the planet. He's not arrogant, just full self-belief. It's been key to his turnaround in form in 2010. But with four goals and seven assists so far this term, he's still not completely content...

Rio Ferdinand said recently that you’ve been United’s best player this season – how does that make you feel?

I feel very happy that he said that because I have been working very hard, I’ve been concentrating a lot on being ready and being at my best for this season. I want to be as good as I can and help my team-mates as much as I can to make United successful. In some bad moments I’ve been able to do a few good things to help the team. I’m happy at the club and I hope to do much more for United than I’ve done up to this point. I’m working hard every day to achieve that.

You’ve scored four goals and set up seven so far this year – is this your best start to a season?

Erm… [pauses] Yes, I think I can say that. But I need to do much more because I’m not completely satisfied with the start to this season.

You’re not happy?

I’m not. I know that if I stop now and just think to myself that I’ve done well, it will mean nothing. That’s why I say I have much more to do.

But you seem to be making the key differences in games – with a goal or an assist. What do you put that down to?

I’ve learnt a lot, particularly from the older players at the club – Giggsy, Scholes and Rio. I’m more mature myself, and that helps. But those players teach you a lot by the way they play. The most important thing is to understand that you give what is best for the team. If youneed a goal, it might be me scoring or providing a pass. Now I understand what I’m going to do and when the right moment is to do it.

Did you notice yourself that there was a moment when that clicked or did it happen over time?

I had to listen to the manager and players like Giggsy – he gives me advice all the time. That’s made me more mature, and I understand the game and the Premier League even more. If I’m doing well, it’s because I’m working hard, but a lot of it is because of the manager and players like Giggsy.

You look really confident in your own ability when you’re playing…

When you are playing well, you feel confident. And when you are confident, you feel like anything is possible. If you have the quality, you just need to be confident and then you can produce your best football.

Are we seeing the complete Nani now, or is there still more to come?

As a player I think that I’m nearly complete. Now I can say I am one of the top players in the world. I play for the best club in the world and I play every game, and I think my role in the team is to score goals or set up goals so that this team can win games.

Is that important to you to know that and to believe it?

Yes, of course. You have to believe in yourself and believe in your abilities. That’s how you become the best player you can be.

You’ve mentioned a few times about the extra work you’ve been doing in training. What specifically have you been working on?

When you have a lot of games it’s not so easy because you are resting and recovering. But last week – when I wasn’t playing in the Carling Cup – I was able to do extra work in the gym, you can stay behind after training and work on your ball skills, your shooting, crossing, free-kicks, everything. In the summer I did a lot as well. Two weeks before we started training I was doing running to get myself fit; I was frustrated after missing out on the World Cup, so I wanted to be ready for the season with United.

You seem to thrive on the big stages as well, do you look forward to the big matches?

The big games are for the big players. All the best players are going to be playing and if you show yourself more than the other players then that means a lot. I want to be one of the best. I’m not scared to play in the big games, because the big matches are the most beautiful in football – you play with very high quality, it’s ball to feet, it’s about playing. I enjoy to see good skills in a game, great shots, saves. Beautiful football, that is what I like. And that helps lift my performance as well.

The fan's question: Why have you stopped doing your backflip celebration? Ian Sarginson

[Laughs] Since I injured my shoulder, I’ve been taking care of myself a little bit more! I can do the backflip without putting my hands down, but I don’t want to risk putting my hands down and injure my shoulder again. The next goal I score I promise for the fans that I will do the backflip, the one without putting my hands down!

He has 30 goals/assists in his last 30 games.

I think about this stat everytime a commentator manages to bring up Nani and inconsistency, suggesting he's still far from producing anything consistent for us, and that we aren't seeing the fruits of his efforts. Every single game. Not in general play, but in end product. Well, 30 out of 30 you repetitive, clueless twat!

Best thing is that this end product still doesn't feel like his full potential. I look forward to seeing what he's doing given another couple of years, at the moment he's dynamite!

Yep, by no means does he looks the finished product, or in anyway reached his peak in terms of ability or consistency, and with each month he seems to get better in certain aspects of his game.

A lot more to look forward to, and a lot more to come. Nani will be special for us.

Where's this from then?

I love his theatrics, especially when he shows the ref the stud marks...if it winds other fans up, i'm all for it.

Me to, im not one for encouraging diving as i cant stand it when rivals do it so i shouldn't and don't condone it from our players but i must admit when Nani does go down and does his Ronaldo esk screaming like a fanny impression i can just imagine the hate filled rage of our rivals fans watching it and i do laugh! its the same when we had Ronnie, Nanis become that player they love to despise, and mainly whether they admit it or not because he's now bloody good, if he was shit they wouldn't care it wouldn't bother them that much case in point when was Nani ever hated before? before the last 10 months of his brilliant form i doubt rival fans even bothered to notice him, its a testament to how good he's become and how important he is to Manchester United hes now become that pantomime villain Ronaldo was.

Long may it continue if you ask me.

No, completely wrong. He despised because he's a grade a cvnt because of his diving cheating whinging incessantly at the ref. That's why - nothing to do with his qualities as a footballer.

As a footballer he's gifted no doubt and for that any fan of any club can only show appreciation

One thing imo he's nowhere near the level of Ronaldo who's talent allied to his directness and strength installed fear into defenders

About a year ago there were threads on her about him leaving pronto as he was was fking rubbish !!

How quickly things change although to be fair he has turned it around in that respect

you mean Ronaldo the one-trick-pony?

I suppose you fairies will never for give Nani for hurting your feelings when you were geting thrashed again and he was "showboating"

weren't too worried that day about "robust tackling" as your players queued up to cut him in half under the approving watch of the ref

The approving watch of the manager an' all. Some really despicable challenges in that game from Gallas, Djourou and Flamini. Text-book example of a team trying to stamp out flair using thuggery. Not a word about it after the game from Wenger either. The massive fecking hypocrite.
