World Cup 2018 & 2022 bids

Where did you get those odds from?

If Qatar gets the WC, I'm definitely boycotting it.

Odds from Paddy Power

My choice has always been England and Australia since Day 1 and both were favorites for a while but it is all change now.

I still hope that sending big hitters like the Prime Minister and Prince William out there can sway the voters back to our side.

They'll "find" a competent squad though.

Just a shame the standouts would probably be from South America.

You overestimate the attraction of their oil money, do you think they have not tried before?

Japan (being the 2nd biggest economy in the world for decades until a few months ago) tried it and didn't really get them anywhere.

1. Their football team is awful, this is the football WC, so having a competent team is kind of important,

Elitism anyone? Also who knows how shit other bidders may be by the time of the world cup, they might be excellent in comparison.

2. The weather is awful, you can air condition the stadia, but you cannot air condition the entire country,

In that case no country in that area of the world can ever host anything, seems a tad like elitism again

3. This is a country of 1.5m population,

Ahh so this is against small countries now, how on earth have Uraguay ever managed to host :wenger:

4. This is a country that bans alcohol,

That will no doubt be revoked for the length of the world cup, as with many German and South African laws at the last two tournaments.

5. This is a country that women are not allowed to show their fact in public, never mind being dressed in bikinis,

See above.

6. All the other 4 bidders deserve it a lot more than they do.

On what grounds?

England & Japan please, I like island nations.

Japan have no chance to be honest - I have told you that for ages!

As far as I am concerned Japan and Korea shouldnt even be allowed to bid because they have hosted very recently.

They got Soria (the Uruguayan), didn't they?

There was also another few; Amaral, Passos and Montezine.

Not that they've much difference though, they're still god-awful to watch

7. Israelis aren't allowed in.

not that I'm Isreali, but i'd be pretty annoyed if i was banned from the country holding the WC...

It's called reasonable expectation, it's no rocket science that the top footballing nations around the world have remained the same since the beginning of time. Nations can improve and normally it takes decades - Japan being a great example. Do you think the Japanese didn't throw money at the problem? It still took them decades to become a respectable footballing nation.

Just like Arctic countries can never host the summer olympics, something are just not meant to be? What next? Holding the Winter Olympics indoor in the middle of the Sahara in name of fairness?

Have Uruguay hosted a 32 team WC?

That will no doubt be revoked for the length of the world cup, as with many German and South African laws at the last two tournaments.

So you intend for them to open hundreds of thousands of bars for ONE month and close them all down afterwards. That should work...

On what grounds?

USA - great stadia, great infrastructure already in place, huge market
Australia - never hosted it before, great sporting nation, some great stadia, safe
Japan - great stadia, amazing infrastructure, huge market, safe
Korea - some great stadia, good infrastructure...

What has Qatar got that the rest don't? Oil.

Putin's non-appearance means he believes Spanish claims of "all the fish are sold" re votes. But now some Russian fish could be up for grabs

Want, not think...

Anyway, they should have a better chance than Korea at least.

For me the biggest issue with the Qatar bid is the tiny size of the country - I just dont see how they can deal with the amount of people who usually attend World Cups. But then I assume they have given proposals for dealing with it all as part of their bid.

A joint Middle East bid between say Qatar, Bahrain, Oman and UAE wouldve made more sense.

Agree that Qatar should not host the WC, the '22 edition should go to Australia, best option IMO - would also do alot for football in the region.

It would, but the schedule would be so hard to follow. If they get it, I just hope they air the games live instead of the tape delay crap they did for the Olympics (here in the US at least).

Yeah, that would be one issue, but I'm positive whichever broadcaster who would have the '22 rights in the US would like to air the world cup live.

That Aussie world cup bid video was like a bad fecking drug trip.

mate, aussies hate that shit about Aboriginal stories and kangaroos, foreigners love it....

That said, it wasn't the best...

To be honest when the opening word of our bid story was "g'day" I knew it was going to be bad.

Shame I missed it! Sounds like a good laugh

Watching the Korea presentation - basically they are just going on about using the WC as a way to unify North and South which is complete bollocks really.

Security would be a MAJOR issue if Qatar were to host the World Cup. It might not have had problems with terrorism in recent times, but the world turning up on Muslim soil, accommodated by the Qatari authorities with a free pass for women to dress as they like in public, for everyone to drink alcohol as and where they please, for people to stick a finger up (as certain Islamic groups would undoubtedly see it) to Islam in general would make it a target like no other.

That should be the real issue with the Qatar bid.

Ji Sung Park presenting right now. First time I have heard him speak. He comes across very well

Dont see how South Korea can get it again in 2022, just 20 years after it last held the games. If it must go to Asia, then IMHO, the world cup should be hosted in either China or India.

Do China or India even want it? Would they be capable of hosting it to a decent standard?

It's a sad state of affairs that England's chances of a successful bid will probably be decided by Jack Warner and his cronies.

This is a man that has allegedly twice been involved in selling on World Cup tickets for huge personal gain.

How the hell he remains a FIFA Vice-President is beyond me.

China and India are both terrible footballing nations, China recently finished below Hong Kong in the Asian Games.

Allegedly is only that.....a may or may not have scenario.

Alternatively, maybe those are the credentials you need. If they weren't then surely something would have been done by now.

When I said allegedly, I was being generous.

In 2006, Panorama revealed that Mr Warner had sold tickets on the black market for that year's World Cup tournament in Germany.

Fifa subsequently ordered Mr Warner's family business, Simpaul Travel, to make a $1m donation to charity to "compensate for the profits it had made through resale of 2006 Fifa World Cup tickets".

I'd say that is pretty damning.

He was capable of it 2006 so I wouldn't be at all surprised if the allegations that he was involved in the procurement of $84,000 worth of 2010 World Cup tickets are true.

That does not bother me in the slightest. In never got in the way of nations like USA or South Africa hosting it in the past. And IMO, it was the right decision to host it in these countries.

FIFA has a duty to spread the popularity of football deep into the corners of the world and in doing so increase the competitiveness and popularity in less developed footballing countries.

Much like the Olympics, hosting the world cup gives a developing country a 'destination' to plan for and so forces it to invest in national infrastructure projects. Given that a world cup would be nationwide, it would encourage a country to further develop its inter city communications. China has these facilities inbuilt ... and by 2022, so would India.

Likewise, hosting a world cup would encourage nations to invest in its footballing infrastructure and development. There is ample time in 11 years to develop a new generation of footballers who would participate in a 2022 world cup ... and so if attention and focus was provided, there is no reason why China or India should not be able to create a competitive team that would do well in the tournament.

Anyway, neither country has applied, so its a moot point, but in my opinion, that a great shame. Id love to have toured either country for a world cup!

Does anyone really believe that any of the 22 members of Fifa's executive committee are still undecided on which way they will vote?
No.

I am sure most, if not all, already know who they will vote for in Round 1, but the way the voting works means that they may have to switch allegiances in the later rounds, so that is why all the lobbying goes on until the very last minute.
