Just seen this news... um... Qatar? Has the world gone mad?

TWO VOTES? GET THE feck IN!

i'm happy enough to be honest - russia are a worthy winner of the 2018 tournament and their bid was good apparently

On the bright side I reckon that if 2018 went ahead there might be funding for the stanley park thus strengthening Liverpool

the 2022 quatar result seems a joke on the other hand

Maybe we're just weirdos that nobody wants to deal with. The IRB, The ICC, FIFA, they all are based in countries outside of where all three games were formed. It doesn't make sense. It's like the NFL deciding to base themselves in Buenos Aires.

Not exactly, the NFL is a national league not an international governing body. But something like the IIHF (ice hockey) ISU (figure skating) being based in Morrocco would be apt.

Qatar's high risk, to be fair. But yeah, if terrorists wanted to target Westerners in the Middle East/Islamic World then they would've blown up Dubai by now. Still, it's such a strange bid, how it managed to pull it off is beyond me.

think a billion dollars a vote may have something to do with it?

Blatter can retire his great grandchildren as well :smirk:

Qatar is one of the most crime free countries in the world. It is punishable by death, jail or deportation (if you are lucky).

Well, that's all concerns regarding Islamic extremisit terrorists dealt with then.

If there's one thing we know about Al Qaeda & co, it's that they value their own personal safety above all else.:smirk:

Qatar...

I've got over the initial shock and actually find it hilarious.

I wonder what Fifa's sponsors make of having to cramp everything into a tiny boiling country.

That's a good point actually, I'd never thought of that before.

You can't have seen their Russia/Disney/Gay night club Euro trance mash up promotion vid, you would never claim their bid was good.

I really really hope it blows up completely in Blatter's ugly face.

To be honest, I'd back Qatar too if they offered me a free holiday and 5 million quid.

They're going to have solar powered stadium-sized Air Con units. To be fair, I'd quite like to see that.

If we're going to overhaul anything in football let's not make it the voting for the venues for World Cups. As an Irishman I say let's stop this farce of making teams line out against minnows like the Faroe Islands and Liechtenstein. It isn't fair. The cnuts can nearly beat us at this stage.

Will be interesting nonetheless. They're planning some excellent stadia with air conditioning. But yeah I imagine fans'll be happy to walk around in 50C!

England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland should all stick bids in for the next time Europe can host.

Consideringa select group of about 20 families has over 90% of the countries wealth, it's not a real reflection on the average wealth.

Actually it is a real reflection of the average wealth, maybe not the distribution of the wealth, but certainly reflects its average.

1657: Full results of 2018 voting:

Round 1: England 2 votes, Netherlands/Belgium 4 votes, Spain/Portugal 7 votes and Russia 9 votes.
Round 2: Netherlands/Belgium 2 votes, Spain/Portugal 7 votes and Russia 12 votes (Russia obtain absolute majority)

From the BBC. Seems some voted tactically in the 1st round to get England out. That's the only logical reasoning I can think of behind backing Netherlands/Belgium in round 1 but not round 2 as 2 people clearly did.

That being said though I do think the heat will be an issue that can't simply be fixed by their endless funds. On the other hand it's not a nation that hasn't hosted a major tournament before.

This isn't any other major tournament though. It's the biggest and most attended in the World. I'd worry they can cope with that many people...Not to mention whether it deserves it simply by virtue of being able to...I'd like to see them qualify for it first. It's a bit of a joke to have the tournament hosted by a team who's never played in it..it's like (as someone said above) moving the ashes to Dubai..This is a prestigious thing that some places (like Holland) with rich history in it have never hosted...hence the slap in the face feeling to many in it's competing countries.

That said I think the fact it'll be good for the M.E as a whole is it's redeeming quality. ...That and all the money.

In 2026, we should have technology to have the world cup on Antarctica, the final frontier.

For 2030, plans are in place to hold in on Moon...

During the 1990 gulf war conflict, i had serve all over Saudi, Bahrain and Kuwait. Qatar is not for off and is like double the size of the isle of man. The thing is, the temperature is bleedin crazy. I had to drink water ever 30 minutes by the gallon and keep in the shade and cover most of the time. Even midnight is warm. Any sport during the day was strictly off limits. They surely must have to play the games at 10pm or something.

Take it this way, the heat killed me then. I certainly dont fancy going back to a place like that again in my life.

half this forum complain about being priced out of a ticket to watch United, yet here they are worrying about how hot it'll be in Qatar, and worried about alcohol, hotel rooms, accomodations...

How about conjuring up the money to go watch United 1st, and we can worry about what Qatar will be like in 12 years later....

Far too close to Blatters Secret Moon Base in which he spends his free weekends, these of course being the weekends when he's not off clubbing baby Seals or chopping down trees in the Amazon.

Disappointing but not surprising. Was hoping it would be England in 2018 or the USA in 2022 or at least one of them. I guess that's me done for getting to a World Cup, can't see still being around come 2026 and it will probably be China or India who hosts it in 2026 anyway.
