World Cup 2018 & 2022 bids

People have no idea how expensive Russia is, I was there last year and the cost of everything was beyond a joke, if you're thinking of going you better start saving now, will they be waving the $300+ visa waiver costs, thats quite a chunk of change just to get into the country

Just bring a few pairs of Levi's 501s next time you go, they're still valuable there, right?

To be fair did anyone really think we would get it? High crime rates, Some of the rudest people on earth, the ever increasing Jeremy Kyle class, a health system that cannt cope, Motorways that grind to a halt daily, Christ if I didn't live here I would not want to come. Lets be fair, would ANY of you wish Liverpool on the world at large? I rest my case.

Just why is it that nothing seems to be able to be done about FIFA?

Everyone knows what a corrupt bunch of bastards they are, they even want the tax laws changed each time a World Cup takes place so that they pay no tax.

Unbelievable in this day and age.

That is a very good point, a requirement of hosting the world cup is that we have to give a visa waiver to absolutely every person wanting to enter this country.

If you have a ticket you don't need a visa. Travel inside the country will be free aswell they say.

The World Cup is not a political aid festival. It's a football tournament first and foremost.

Russia has reason to claim eastern Europe deserves it's chance to host a WC..It has a long history and has contributed heavily to not just previous WCs, but to football as a whole...

Qatar has none. Zip. It has no football history, it is a tiny, impractical (in size and temperature) country, whose entire bid was based on the fact it's has enormous wealth and can splash it all over the place to improve it's standing as a tourist resort for rich business men..It's like celebrating Vegas getting the bid.

How you're trying to twist it's victory into a triumph for the little guy is hilarious.

You're not wrong. The tournament should go to whoever can put on the best most economical competition. It's absolutely perverse to see having to build 12 stadium (that, if other tournaments can be used as an example, will probs not be in use 20-30 years later) is an advantage! It's so blindingly obvious it's bordering on retarded if you think it's a good thing! The money which would be spent could, instead be reinvested into grass roots rather than on infrastructure that will last a month.

As for qatar, it's like moving an ashes series to dubai.

No I think Qatar is abit like giving it to South Africa .... in that its been awarded to the region/continent with Qatar being the host. Qatar's tournament will allow the entire middle east to participate and celebrate its culture and improve its footballing capability just as South africa facilitated the rest of Africa. Just be open minded about it and accept that every nation has the right to host this tournament if it can prove it has the capabilities to do so.

First of all, that's an insult to South Africa. Second, suggesting that "the entire Middle East" has some kind of identifiable singular "culture" is as hilarious as it would be offensive to most people from the region, although such blatant orientalist nonsense explains what's underlying your nonsense. Finally, there are no less than seven ME countries which would be vastly more logical as candidates for a world cup, eight if you count Egypt.

The UAE you could maybe understand...but fecking Qatar?

I honestly can't believe this paragraph... an open appeal for totalitarianism?!:wenger:

Yes, slag of that Panorama all you like, but to suggest that a) the government should have banned the broadcast because b) that is how the world is going and we should get in line... well that just beggars belief!

"Freedom of speech for the sake of it", ffs. I've argued in the current events plenty of times against those who believe freedom of speech should be absolute (Americans mainly), but to censor something because it might upset some FIFA delegates? That's insane.

Definitely agree with you there; however, the media should have thought about the repercussions of their reports and exercised a bit of self-censorship at least until after the voting took place...but we all know they're pretty much rabid savages and refuse to contain themselevs.

Qatar doesn't have the population to fill stadiums. and the migrant workers there would also would mostly prefer cricket to football. so, I forsee lots of empty seats.

Its great.... I'm not going to a World Cup after 2014, and even that's only becasue I'm from Brazil. I wonder where 2026 will be?

Good job FIFA, great work getting the whole World involved...

You obviously have no knowledge of daily life in South Africa, Brazil or Russia.

So, sweepstake on the price of a pint in Qatar? Since it's only going to be in designated fan zones that you'll be able to drink, I reckon £10 a go is a fair opening bid.

I'd say it was a decent gesture - let foreigners enjoy the same luxuries they're used to beyond Qatarian borders, or would you rather they kept the alcohol ban?

I'm sure they'd revert back to normal policy following the world cup anyway.

Id rather they had some beliefs that could not be bought. Heroin is illegal here, should we legalise it for the duration of a sporting event?

Only one solution to this, all out war with Russia. I'd suggest all out war with Qatar too but Millwall would feck them up over one weekend.

FIFA are drumming home the point that this decision has nothing to do with the bid, and everything to do with the English media

Then their actions today prove them to be everything that the English media have claimed, and a whole lot more.

Criminals are in charge of the international game. Absolute criminals.

Sorry Doc, No, Russians probably wouldn't wear non designer jeans like Levis - very stylish bunch! you can buy whatever you want there now

Damn capitalism, destroying my blue jean dreams of endless wealth.

Maybe it's time to try and open a brewery in Qatar?

Id rather they had some beliefs that could not be bought. Heroin is illegal here, should we legalise it for the duration of a sporting event?

Heroin isn't legal anywhere really, I don't understand the analogy.

I'm pretty sure the native Qatarians won't be drinking..publicly anyway.

Qatar doesn't have the population to fill stadiums. and the migrant workers there would also would mostly prefer cricket to football. so, I forsee lots of empty seats.

They wouldn't be able to afford the tickets.

Re the expense of Russia, I may have just made this up, but I'm sure I heard that they were waiving the visa cost and that ticket holders would have free use of public transport?

edit: too slow.

The weather in summertime is usually very very warm

Yes, but you should watch out for the bears when crossing the street.

Some of the replies on this thread make it look like this forum has a solid percentage of retards.

The summer weather in the european part of Russia where the World Cup will take place is no different than that of the Eastern or Central Europe.

There's corruption, there's elements of racism and a whole lot needs to be done to improve the existing and build new infrastructure to satisfy a tournament of such magnitude as the World Cup. The country has got seven and a half years to prepare and you better believe it they'll do their best.

As for millions of Russians who grew up watching the biggest stars on their tv screens this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see them live. The World Cup in Russia is long time overdue, if you ask me.

Just why is it that nothing seems to be able to be done about FIFA?

The FA could chuck its dummy out of its pram. I don't think that it's a constructive way to go, but it could do it if it gets support from some others. Ah feck it, why not, we invented this game, it's not called "The FA" for no reason, it's because it is "The Football Association". The danger is getting chucked out of UEFA in the process, however, if we could get support from at least two other major nations within UEFA, it could be a viable way forward. UEFA runs world football in terms of economics, not FIFA. Whatever happens, they cannot remove the FA from the IFAB.

this.

I thought England's strongest proposal was the whole united thing. actually changing lives of youths in parts of the world that need that sort of help. I guess if these new stadia from qatar are used as the national teams stadia then thats nice.

feck it i guess im going to rio in 2014. Cant see myself going to russia and surely not qatar.

Enjoy the crime.

I think you take for granted the country you are in. We live in a diverse society that is admittedly far from perfect. However when comparing ourselves to the rest of the world we stand up quite nicely, You insult Liverpool but if I had to be there or Russia (anyway but moscow) I no where i'd be.

Brazil = crime

Russia = Racism

Qatar = Biggest terrorist target in history

What I dont get is these countries dont have big football stadiums for a reason, Most that have been built in recent olympics and world cups are now crippling thier current owners or not even being used. Why has it become a perception that the world cup is an event to build a footballing country? It isnt, its a football event and if every other one is in a country that needs stadia built would have no objection but to do now four in a row where almost the entire venue list has to be built from scratch is ridiculous.

This in fact proves how important that speech is.

They obviously do not want themselves investigated, which should result in even more investigation, especially in light of the shocking events of today - which can only be about one thing, and it isn't "sharing football with the world".

The World Cup in the place of the birth of the game is also a long time overdue, if you ask me. I said earlier though, I don't mind Russia getting it.

Well, if the idea is 'try to uncover our corruption and you'll pay for it', then feck FIFA.

From the posts here you'd think terrorists just casually roll through the sidewalks of Qatar with RPGs holstered on their backs

I'm with you. Lets take the game back. The only problem is that our FA are inept!

Enough said :)

The migrant workers will the ones building the new stadia...will be working under the most exploitive working conditions....(when deaths are covered up on a regular basis)....and then treated like dirt.

Qatar's human rights history is a joke and how they got the World Cup is beyond me.....oh wait...it is run by a dictator King!

Mmmmm?

Anyone going to Qatar in 2022 will have lot's fun. No alcohol allowed....virtually no restaurants outside of the 5/6 main hotels....

....oh yes! Then watching football in the middle of their summer which gets temperatures of 40+ every day.

Nightmare!
