Are you people (from England) really angry with this ?
No, I was actually hoping it would be in Spain/Portugal, it's merely the obviously corrupt choice of Russia that annoys me.

So what are Russia and Qatar? Russia might be 3rd rate at best. Qatar doesn't even register in terms of football. I'm glad FIFA decided to "bring football" to an astounding 1.6m people. Maybe the Vatican should go for it next time since they don't have any stadiums, no football history or culture, and lots of money.
You also think it's great for a country to be punished for pointing out corruption within FIFA? Maybe FIFA should take it as a hint to sort itself out rather than saying "NO! You can't do this to us! No World Cup for you!"
1622: It turns out it was a landslide for Russia. They won by reaching an absolute majority of 12 votes from the 22 voting members of Fifa's executive committee after only two rounds.
BBC Sport
Leaving aside allegations of corruption and cash (which are hard to ingore given th Qatar victory), I guess most European fans still believe that the World Cup should be about putting on a great show, and should be hosted by one of the handful of countries with the fans, the infrastructure and the passion (Were it not for the fact they've had it in the last 30 years anwyway, I'd be just as pissed off for Spain).
FIFA obviously see it differently, and think it is about taking a country that isn't so into football and isn't in a position to host it, and kicking them into shape. Great for that country, but not so much for fans around the world.
I think some of your reactions are hilarious. Russia will put on a great show its a given. The summer climate will be fine. They have invested a lot of time into their bid just like England and they have never hosted a WC before. Why dont they deserve it? Maybe this will also help the racism issue too in the country. I think its a great place to stage the tournament.
Qatar will have high tech stadiums with climate contol and will be spectacular. What will they do with all the stadiums have the event? Who gives a feck, thats none of our problems is it?
Hassan Abdulla al Thawadi, chief executive of the Qatar 2022 World Cup bid, said the Muslim state would also permit alcohol consumption during the world’s most watched sporting event. Specific fan-zones will be set up during the event, they will provide alcohol for sale.
Surely if Qatar can be considered a host, Canada can as well.
We put on the most successfull youth World Cup in terms of attendance.
Toronto is THE most multi cultural city on the planet.
The entire country has an excellent reputation of being multicultural.
We don't have stadia and our large cities are too far apart but a joint bid with the USA would really make sense. Imagine games in Toronto, Montreal, New York, Philidelphia and Detroit. So many cultures, and great cities with fantastic sports history and tons of character.
Absolute shame that a city like Toronto has never hosted a world wide event. Beijing screwed us of the 2008 summer games. feck.

Say what you like about the Qatar bid, but you can't knock their top, top stadiums.

Someone said they are making an exception for the time of the tournament?
Putting aside your amusing idea of the second greatest superpower in history and the second most dominant force of the 20th century as somehow part of a new wave, how can you possibly justify Qatar and compare it to the likes of China, India and Brazil? It's just another of those oil bubbles which will burst very drastically in the near(ish) future. It is a tiny country which won't exist at the end of this century which you seem to think it owns. To put it in the same bracket as the BRIC nations is laughable.
Its the right result for football to take the games most prestigious tournament to new frontiers. Delighted for Qatar and the Middle East who will present football in a totally new way and just as Brazil, China and India have hosted major world events in the past few years, so Russia as one of the new major world economies deserves to have its chance.
The 'old' democratic nations of the 20th Century will have to accept that there time was last century and that this one belongs for new nations to have the chance to show off their cultures and capabilities.
But FIFA has a duty to promote football everywhere and so to award its premier tournament new countries who wll now have the excuse to enhance their footballing capabilities and infrastructure can only be good news for the game. I think FIFA got it right.
Tragedy for England but then again, we are a completely second rate footballing country who just so happens to have the fortune of having a strong economy and so can host one of the richest leagues.
If England were punished because of their media, then I think thats also good. "Freedom of speech" for the sake of it is a totally flawed and destructive concept - Panorama's accusations (of events from a decade ago!) have turned out to be baseless of evidence. And so our Governments inability to stop the BBC from broadcasting these views has proven to be there undoing. The world is changing quickly and until those on these shores realise that there way is not the only way, future humiliations on the global stage await.
I thought Toronto hosted one of the recent Winter Olympics?

feck me...I would've liked to see either Australia, Holland & Belgium, or Korea ahead of Qatar.
Isn't the temperature very high in Qatar? With lots of humidity? If so...well, I can see players dying of exhaustion and dehydration.
funny how that works when cash is involved. Religion takes a back seat. I wonder what the less tolerant of the faith will think about that decison.

No I think Qatar is abit like giving it to South Africa .... in that its been awarded to the region/continent with Qatar being the host. Qatar's tournament will allow the entire middle east to participate and celebrate its culture and improve its footballing capability just as South africa facilitated the rest of Africa. Just be open minded about it and accept that every nation has the right to host this tournament if it can prove it has the capabilities to do so.
Idiot shadow government minister on Sky at the moment.

Well done, way to go, sell your beliefs down the river for a few sheckles more.

Idiot Prime Minister talking on BBC live
Cameron absolutely bang on "we had the best bid, FIFA said we had the best technical bid, FIFA said that we had the best commercial bid and were the lowest risk - apparently this is not enough."
FIFA wants some A-rab money!!
The money argument doesn't wash, at least in terms of how much the tournament generates, because if that was the case England would have won it. The technical reports said, England was the only bidding country that could host it tomorrow. Very little investment would have been required in infrastructure (transport, stadia, facilities, hotels, etc.) which would have allowed more money from the proceeds to have been pumped back into the game. It's a farce!
