Rio Ferdinand

Please god this man stays fit for the run in, id say having him Vida and Van der Sar fit and in tandem at the back is the key for us now, we'll always score goals but weve leaked to many this year, 32 already in the league is a lot more than weve conceded in previous campaigns at this stage.

The last time I can remember him coming back from injury for a big game was for our 4 - 3 derby game win at OT. Got to admit I was a little worried

He was a little bit better today I think

He is the definition of a MAJESTIC defender.

Absolutely fantastic, after that time out he just came back and looked completely at ease.

he was a big part of our win tonight, Smalling's been great, but Rio just has so much experience and won so many important balls tonight it was incredible.

I was concerned that it would upset the balance of the team. But from the first header?tackle, defensive block you just know that he had loads of experience.

Also enjoyed the fact that he stayed on his feet and managed to get through the entire game. I would want him to play on Saturday against Fulham, Zamora can be quite a handful.

Experience is vital in these last few games. As well as Smalling has done, and he will be a great player for us in future, we have to go with our 1st choice defence whenever possible. But what a great understudy to come in if needed.

That was an amazing performance from Ferdinand. Usually it takes players two or three games to get back to top form after an injury but he stepped back in to play at his best.
That's why I'm happy for Rio to come straight back in no matter how big the match and how long he's been out. I'm always a little unsure about Vidic as he does normally take a few games to get back into top form (as most players do), but Rio almost always comes back as if he's never been out.

Considering how often he's been injured these last three years, it's an invaluable asset. :nervous::drool:

Any chance of a gif of that incident with Torres where Torres almost shit his shorts ?

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has saluted captain Rio Ferdinand for his return to competitive football during the week.

The centre-back played a full 90 minutes of the 1-0 win over Chelsea in the Champions League quarter-final at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night after being sidelined for nine weeks with a calf injury and his showing was not lost on Ferguson.

The Scottish tactician admitted it was tough to drop the promising Chris Smalling but said his decision was vindicated by the performance of Ferdinand.

"It was a terrible for me to explain to Chris Smalling that he wasn't playing given the way he has performed for us this season," said Ferguson.

"He understood. He is part of the squad and he won't be forgotten.

"But it's Rio's experience isn't it. He has such composure. He talks to players.

“When Antonio Valencia went to full-back he was talking all the time. He was phenomenal."

Ferguson added that he was expecting Ferdinand to come off for a rest and was surprised that the former England skipper got through the entire match.

"I was waiting for the moment where he might tire a little bit but there was no sign of it," he added.

"He had done 10 days' physical work before he started football training.

"People might think it was a gamble. My only gamble was if he wasn't really up for it. Whether we had to talk him into it.

"That wasn't the case. He came to me. He said I am ready. It was great news."

I remember his first game back after the ban. He had a energy bar during the game but got through easily.
That was different because he had been training for a long time, but I was amazed at how easily he slotted in and how important he was.

I really hope he doesnt have fitness issues

His first game back from his 8 month ban, can;t remember if it was against you guys or Liverpool. He was amazing in that match too.

vs. Liverpool. He was eating a chocolate bar on the pitch near the end :)
I remember it was the last game of 2005/06 season, against Charlton.

I've got even this game somewhere on a CD, but I'm sure I won't find it when I need this.

I just couldn't forget the instant impact he had in that match. It wasn't just the defending, it was the way he helped us play football, pass our way from the backline to midfield, rather than hoof it forward. It's an incredible change, almost a different team.

What a player he has become for us. Makes the haggling over the fee with Leeds (remember THAT running saga?!) and the eventual record fee all quite different. It's a decent situation we've got even with his injuries, because when he's out we can field and further Smalling and Evans.
