Phil Jones

the only concern with O'Shea if we end up retaining him is his recent injuries that have been relatively long.

Those two injuries which could be put down to being just unfortunate haven't been as a result of some underlying problem & he isn't a lad that gets injured alot anyways. Prior to those two recent injuries one as a result of a bood clot i think, i can't remember the last time he was out. If he stays & i hope he does he'll be more than adequate cover for the two full back positions, him being around will only make us even stronger again.

he's the next John Terry or Tony Adams. when they were young of course. I've no idea if that's true or not but that's what Blackburn were supposedly hyping him up to be.

I saw someone say this yesterday. How can we predict that he will get anywhere near Terry's level?

My answer would be I will be over the moon if he is as good as Terry.

Surely we could predict it on what we've seen of him in the season just gone, a season where i think he was better than Terry & he's still only 19.

Welcome Phil Jones!

Good luck Phil. Welcome aboard.

Glad both ourselves and Blackburn have come out and made this official publicly now to quash all these daft rumours. Was no good for the player having all this gossip going round while he's at a tournament.

Absolutely delighted we've picked him up. He's going to be a fan's favourite I think.

A COACHS ANALYSIS OF PHIL JONES

As a Blackburn Rovers fan, I am gutted we are losing Phil Jones after such a short time, as a coach, I think he is making the right move, good club and great coaches and a real opportunity for the lad to push on to even greater heights, so here is my take on Phil Jones.

Manchester United’s current defensive partnership of Vidic and Ferdinand complement each other well, Ferdinand the footballer and Vidic the defender, Ferdinand is a footballer who defends and Vidic is a total defender who puts his body behind the ball and man all the time to defend the goal, Phil Jones is a defender, a total defender who has the ability to come out of defence with the ball with both power and not too little pace either, he is a defender who can play football, you are getting a great combination of both Ferdinand and Vidic.

With young players, you normally get inconsistency, it’s down to inexperience but with Jones this hasn’t happened and whilst he has made the odd mistake and playing in a struggling team, he has been one of the better players, week in week out whether playing in central defence or midfield.

Jones has great balance, can pass a football and has the ability to read the game well with great positional sense, he has good leadership qualities and for a 19 year old to give rollickings to much older and experienced players endorses that fact, he is level headed, has a wonderful attitude, determination and desire to be the best he can possibly be, he will view going to United as an opportunity to continue his football education and be even better.

He is a genuinely nice lad, trains well and in my opinion, will captain his country within a few years, he is that good, the only thing I don’t know is if he has a loss of form how he will react, I don’t know that because at Rovers, he really hasn’t had a bad run of form, the odd mistake yes, but he grits his teeth and doesn’t let the mistakes affect his game.

So I wish the lad all the best at United (except when they play Rovers) but you really have a top, top, player who will really surprise you with his ability both with and without the ball.

Am I the only one who reported him for Spam?

I read/heard from a number of places that Fergie didn't want to sign him until next year and was pushed to bid by others triggering his 'release clause'

Is there any truth to that or is it simply speculation?

The scousers are saying that, because they are desperate to think they have screwed up Uniteds transfer plans ( ignoring the fact Arsenal were more realistic rivals for the player).

But if united were aware of his release clause, and aware that he was so good and so many big clubs were tracking him, then I don't see how they could have ever really considered him as something to leave until 2012.

Wow, the price is really inflated. I don't believe Jones is a 16 million player, let alone 20 million (even with add-ons). Actually, I don't think the current crop of English youngsters are worth 16m either. Anyway, pleased we signed him (gutted about the fee though), but not over the moon like most people here. He's for the future that's for sure.

Now I'd like to see us signing an attacking player with flair, creativity and ability who can slot right into our central midfield.

forget 16 million. wilshere is worth double that.

Oh yeah, forgot about Wilshere. He's a terrific player and def worth over 16 million. Maybe Joe Hart as well.

Anyway, I'm of the opinion that Jones isn't a 16m player, not at the moment. Signing him is a gamble, because he's so young, so I guess worth taking.

think we will not be asking a lot for him...as a compromise to his pay I mean.

it will be a way to help him as well as us looking to the future.

He probably wants to go to a club closer to teh top 4...Everton, Spurs..?

What on earth does this mean? My point was that Sunderland will be offering him far less money than he's on here - and he would be playing for Sunderland, not Man United. It's not that attractive an offer, only balanced by playing more regularly, but he's been content to be in and out for years so unless he's simply out he's not likely to go.

I doubt Spurs would be interested. Maybe Everton, but they might buy Wes Brown - different story for him as he's been frozen out here.

I think all he's saying is that United may opt for a low fee to give Sunderland room to give him a good contract. Esp if we don't give him a testimonial the club will benefit. Having said that, it's pure spaculation that Sheasy is on his way - but if Fergie has decided his options here are limited, on his way he will go.

Cool, that's our central defence sorted for the foreseeable future. Let's sort our midfield now.

That deserves its own thread, absolutely stunning in it's sheer ridiculous bitterness. It's like a parody of RAWK.

Did you think Smalling was worth 10m when we signed him? He looks a steal right now
