Luka Modric / Signs for Real Madrid

Modric is most obviously like Scholes - a passing midfielder who makes the whole team work.

If he is supposed to be of the Scholes mould then I definitely don't want him. Scholes' best attributes are his ranged passing and keeping possession under pressure... From what I've seen Modric isn't great at ranged passing and is poor when under heavy pressure.

Modric is great at keeping possession under pressure.

For me, it kind of shows how poor some of the leading lights were last season, because I don't think Modric was all that great. Sure, he was consistent, but in a normal season, he wouldn't be mentioned.

This highlights the issue with Modric, and people's perception of him.

I personally think Modric is superb and was easily in the top three performers over the course of last season. For me, he's Spurs key player and is the hub of most of what they do. He might not be on the end of the move but without him they look much less effective.

People on here (and in football in general) are raving about Wilshere because he can pick a pass and plays an almost "continental game" with a great range of passing generally. This is special because very few English players can do it.

Modric is exactly the same type of player - can dictate tempo from deep and pull the strings. May not be the glory player getting on the end of it but is consistently excellent in the background.

If he'd been playing for United and had performed like he had last year we'd be hailing him as a genius.

I think that's one of his better attributes actually, his close control gets him out of tight situations quite efficiently.

I must have been watching a different player this year. I saw a player who is great when not under pressure (like Carrick), but folds like a pack of cards when under pressure (like Carrick).

Fortunately for Spurs teams don't pressure their midfield as much as they do against a big team like United, so he often gets a lot of room. A luxury he would not be afforded in our midfield.

That doesn't make any sense, when you consider that some of Modric's best performances were against the likes of United, City, Arsenal and Chelsea.

Unless you're implying these teams somehow made it to the top of the league without putting any pressure on the opposition midfield?

To be fair, it could be argued that we did exactly that. Putting pressure on the opposition midfield is something we're rubbish at, too often we give the opposition a free ride up to our penalty box.

Difference is Wilshere is still only about seven, already in the same league as Modric and will probably get much better, also looks like a leader and a winner with big game cojones.

So what?

Wilshere may very well become a more complete and "better" player - his contribution as it stands is still vital to his club now, as is Modric's.

I'm not suggesting that Modric will ever be one of the worlds great midfielders, simply that some people on here don't seem to recognise his abilities. He may not be flashy or be scoring world class goals every couple of weeks but what he does is as valuable (if not more so) to the side as anything produced by Bale or Van Der Vaart - providing a solid platform for the team going forward.

My point is that while what he does appears fairly simple - very few players in the PL can do the same with any level of consistency. These players may be ten a penny abroad but these abilities seem to be lacking over here.

What is clear to me is that while people seem to think Modric is "overrated", without Paul Scholes we lack anyone with the ability to do what he does - often being overran in midfield last season by average sides (Wolves away specifically springs to mind) letting opposition teams have the ball instead of retaining possesion hurt United on more than one occaision last year.

Shit, another 2.3 months of this transfer speculation!!!! C'mon SAF, just get it over with now already!

OT, I would be delighted if we signed Modric. He is exactly what we need. Has a bit of Giggs and Scholes in him, plus he can perform well in a 2 man midfield. That is the only reason I'd have him over Sneijder. (ideally I'd be greedy and want them both!!)

That being said, I really don't think any club is going to get him for anything under 35M (GBP), realistically even under 40M!! And for that price, I would honestly prefer to go look at other options.

Such as? Modric is a very rare commodity, I can't think of many attainable midfielders in his bracket.

Well I really do agree with you about Modric but 40M? No thanks. I'd rather try and get Banega and Martinez or even both for 40M. There's that M'vila chap in France. Defour. Maybe non currently as good as Modric but 40M is alot of money.

I actually really believe that SAF is going to sign someone who have slipped under our radar! Sneijder (fee + wages), Modric (fee) are all most likely difficult to sign this summer. Not to forget we've already spent close to 50M this summer.

De Gea, Jones and Young + possible this Varane bloke. That will be our business this summer.

Not really

Yes, really.

If Gibson follows Scholes and Hargreaves that's three first team squad central midfielders leaving. Along with, possibly, O'Shea (who also plays in central midfield) and Brown.

To be replaced by a winger and two teenage central defenders? Nah, that's unlikely...

Hargreaves hasn't played for 2 seasons. Not going to be missed. Gibson and Scholes were part timers last season.

Jones will be used in midfield this coming season, I reckon. Thst leaves us with Carrick, Fletcher, Jones, Anderson, Giggs, Park and Cleverley as options for 2/3 central midfield spots. More than enough.

Enough players but not enough quality. Giggs and Scholes were our 2 most creative central midfielders and ones retired. Ridiculous to rely on Giggs alone.

We need him and should go for him. It's as simple as that.

£35m is his true value in 2011.

He will cost £40m probably. An acceptable price to overpay.

Wilshere will shit over Modric one day. He's got it in him to be a world class player imo.

Gibson and Scholes made 34 league appearances between them, and 20 starts. That has to be replaced one way or another, and I'm not sure we can take the risk of hoping (again) that Anderson steps up and becomes a first-team player.

We played 8 players in central midfield in the league in total last season - you've listed 7 there, two of whom are unproven in the position at this level, one of whom we don't know if he'll regain form after a debilitating illness, one of whom will probably feature less than last season, and one of whom who is really a winger who comes central and is rarely played in a midfield two.

And this is talking purely numbers - ignoring quality, which even the most ardent defender of the squad would agree could be improved upon in central midfield.

At least one new central midfielder is a must.

If we go into next season with Carrick, Fletcher, Jones, Anderson, Giggs, Park and Cleverley and come even close to matching this seasons achievements I'll be amazed.
