A Friendly Thread For Protesting Fans

We've been 'fighting' them for 20 years and yet they still came up with/supported this plan.

We're fighting the wrong people. By all means aim our ire at the PL/FA, we need the rules changed before any change of ownership to ensure this sort of scenario cannot happen again.

This isn’t just 20 people at carrington or 2000 people at OT. This is nationwide now. It’s coming from all angles. Let the fans vent their frustrations at their clubs. If the fans of the 6 clubs stick together and cause enough unrest then who knows what the government will decide to do.

What are united are requesting?

What prevents the new owners coming in spending a bit less and taking bigger dividends?

Has Mike Ashley ever given a shit about what Newcastle fans want?
Because they will get booted out the same way?
As for the requests, I think they gravitate towards:
1. Do not take money out of the club
2. Invest in infrastructure in and around OT
3. Don't let bean counters to decide football matters.

If you are going to say that every club is bought to create profit, that is distinctly not true. Even disregarding the supporters owned club, a successful self sufficient club can be an asset in itself, that can increase in value, without the need to extract dividends. You can buy a property in a prime location, and you don't need to let it. Same way, you buy amazon shares because you expect them to increase in price, and they don't pay out dividend.

A club of such size can be a tremendous PR opportunity as well. That is why the Saudis want to buy us. But that of course is not limited to nation states.

Realistically who can afford to pay the £4billion or whatever it is the Glazers want, it seems that the Saudis are the main options and I wouldn’t want them as our owners.

We can only hope someone like Jeff Bezos turns his hand to football or there is nothing to say our next owner won’t be as bad as the Glazers.

It’s a shite situation we’re in.
Bezos is a businessman, I think he is very likely he would not be any better than the Glazers or maybe even worse making us a giant advertisement platform, potentially renaming the stadium etc to drive profits for his other businesses, and maybe even take money from United on top of that. Unless you are a hardcore United fan and happen to have $3b you don't need, nothing is gonna change with the new owners. I would want them to feck off and just pray we get someone better but reality is that there is a 50% chance we will get somebody worse.

One form of protest that can be done from your bedroom is pressuring sponsors. Read up on who sponsors United, go to their Twitter page or find out their email and write to them. Lots of people have pressured sponsors into backing out, they don’t like negative activity on their social media.
I didn’t expect to come in here and read about how pointless everything is, but I shouldn’t be surprised. Reform is important, but hurting the Glazer’s grip on the club is just as important.

I know. It literally took a few posts and here we are again

So spend 3 billion minimum and take no money out of the club.

“reasonable” you say?

You want a billionaire to come and buy the club for pure altruistic reasons, wow.

So the other option then is someone like the Saudis, do you think that’s a better option than Glazers?

I simply cannot see anyone buying the club for $3b or so and don't take anything in return. Just doesn't make any sense. New owners would be either the likes of Saudis or similar to the Glazers.
Last post of the day for me :(
You make a good point, I think the club runs itself money wise, if we hadn't been paying interest every year, thats 40 or 50 million a season there would be plenty money in the bank,
Owners will always pay themselves,
Would love 1 rich person to team up with fans to buy it,

Super league is dead - aren’t the 6 clubs all protesting different things? Specific people out of their own clubs?

we're a football club, don't want to be a vehicle for an investment company, don't want to be a PLC, don't want another dodgy billionaire taking it over, would rather be fully fan owned and although that's pie in the sky that's the stance I've taken for years.

Mansour has sold % to Chinese and US investors, Id rather they fecked off too but that's the issue, they won't so I'll still support the club but don't expect me to be a shill for Mansour as I won't be, people can say what they want about him but I do get pissed off with people saying 'if that was united I wouldn't support the club' as it's dead easy to say that but I don't believe as many would walk away as they claim.
No they wouldn’t walk away many would lap it up and that’s what I think would happen if the Saudis took over too which I wouldn’t want but would probably still support them.

Your points are fair ones everyone would like a fan owned club or even a perfect owner but it’s not possible.

You can’t say you haven’t been happy with the upsurge in City’s success though and the entertainment over the past how many years.

Stop being so negative, don't you know that 20 bods with a spray-painted sheet is exactly what we should be doing and will get rid of the Glazers?

Nevermind that whoever replaces them could be multitudes worse, at least we've got rid of the blood-sucking Yanks.

Worth signing up for this if anyone hasn’t already, only takes a minute to do.
EDIT: reclaimourgame.com is the site for it I think.

How can someone in Ireland/Northern Ireland or nearby in Europe contribute to this? My guess is mostly online
The GlazersOut movement on Twitter is doing well, I'd suggest anyone who can to contribute to it to do so.

You can do things like
  1. Respond to official united tweets with a piece of text and then #GlazersOut. Using a hashtag on it's own isn't great for awareness
  2. Respond to football journalists tweets with a piece of text and then #GlazersOut.
  3. Complain to United's sponsors (Adidas, Chevrolet, Chival Regas etc), as replies in tweets.
  4. Don't get into argument about ole-in/ole-out, it just distracts from the main goal of getting the Glazers out
  5. Follow GlazerOut accounts - I'm sure we'll have a few "ring leaders" who'll be able to co-ordinate it as the movement grows.
This may sound like a stretch, but well co-ordinated social media campaigns have worked in the past, and and we should try and see if it makes a difference.

ha ha, there's plenty of stuff the government and FA can do regarding how much debt can be taken on, size of dividends, maximum expenditure, fan voting rights, etc even without forcing 50+1.

Those things are far more important before any new pie in the sky owner comes in and can just run the club how they see fit.

A lot of that is just noise (either unintentional or deliberate deflection). Just ignore either with or without button. You will find it works well.

And if they respond by putting us up for sale and sell to the Saudis for 3bn, victory?

Compain to the fecking FA and government for heaven's sake.

So spend 3 billion minimum and take no money out of the club.

Why are you like that? It does not need to be a natural person that buys the club. Corporations need PR as well.
As for:
So spend 3 billion minimum and take no money out of the club.

Yes . Again why people buy properties for 10s of millions and barely live there? Why people/corp/ banks invest billions into stocks that don't pay dividend? Because they expect them to increase in value over time.
Exactly the same with a football club, which:
1. Has a huge fan base
2. Has not been seen the highest success for a while

That means there is potential to grow. If that club starts winning trophies the brand value starts to increase as well.

Hope that helps.

And if they respond by putting us up for sale and sell to the Saudis for 3bn, victory?

The twerking for the Saudi's makes me sick. Yeah lets get rid of the Glazers so we can be owned by murderers and be used for state propaganda.

Totally agree, but that's apparently not doing enough to get rid of those nasty Glazers. That's all that matters to some. Doesn't matter who comes in as long as they've gone.

Unfortunately, if they are successfl in getting rid of the Glazers, I can see us going through all this again with the new owners because the PL/FA rules haven't been changed beforehand.

Not a single person is saying “it’s pointless to protest”. If you can read and pay attention you will notice that people are saying that the protests need to be directed towards the government and FA otherwise they are utterly fecking nonsensical.

I get what you’re saying but ultimately protests are about amplification, optics and impact. The hope is that these small protests (even while appealing to the wrong target audience) will eventually lead to a general shift in perception and mindset at macro policy and legislative levels.

We need comprehensive structural change to the values that underpin football club ownership and commercialisation.

The twerking for the Saudi's makes me sick. Yeah lets get rid of the Glazers so we can be owned by murderers and be used for state propaganda.
Ah, right? You like the Glazers? What they have done for the club? Let me sit down and hear you out? How great are they, really?

We've got a 1 in 6 chance that it's the Glazers.

 it'll be Liverpool's.
The Glazer' are onto a good thing at United. They'll unleash their PR team on the Caf and other places, who then tell us how great they are for the club and look at all the money the club has been allowed to spend on transfers and how they've miraculously increased revenues through their expertise. Seen it all before and so it shall continue. Hoping for things to get better, wishing for exciting football and maybe a few trophies along the way. While the stadium degrades and the leaches rightly take their blood from their franchise.

So you want us to be bought by a PE for 3bn quid (51%), and despite that 51% ownership they also agree to pay out no dividends to their investors in the hope that in 10 years they can flog us for massive profit to???????

This is more like it.

50+1 will never happen under Tory government unfortunately.
Don't think it will happen under any government, it's just not workable nowadays. Possibly could have been done when the PL was set up, but would have been difficult even then.

speak for all City and Chelsea fans why don't you, I'd be delighted if Mansour sold up

Has Mansour make too many mistakes before that you don't even want to give him 2nd chance? Be careful what you wish for mate. He invested a lot for your club, Glazers don't invest a penny.

If you really want to try something, join RAWK and Blue moon and whatever forums Chelsea, Spurs, Arsenal fans post. Set up a thread on one platform where you can all post and organise across clubs.

One person can make a difference if you can organise say 100 fans here to do something (legal obviously) at the same time as fans from the other 6 clubs, you begin to build momentum , Joint action by fans at the same time across the country will be noticed.

EDIT other 5 clubs obviously!
That's really good, seems to me. If all the threads had a unifying element, a logo or something? Peace pipe?

Didn't think so. Peace :)
I'm sorry for questioning who the magical owner in waiting is. Reality is unless government change football ownership (never happen under Tories) we would bought by the Saudis who would use the club as a propaganda machine or maybe a slightly better version of the Glazers. How many rich billionaires are out there that wouldn't want to milk Manchester United?

And if they respond by putting us up for sale and sell to the Saudis for 3bn, victory?

Compain to the fecking FA and government for heaven's sake.
I totally agree we need to complain to the government, but we're not going to get traction unless there's enough pressure on the owners.
It can be part of any campaign, but you need to get numbers early while it's fresh in people's thoughts.

Also, how do I as someone in Ireland complain to another government? I'm not a UK citizen, but love this club just as much as the next person and want to contribute.
We could start a UK gov petition once we've got an active campaign to pull in numbers?
