Adnan Januzaj

He didn't say you were wrong for saying he's casual at times. I see it as trying to rid of that Arsenal-ness as noodle calls it that you see in players like Nasri who are content to let their ability do the talking. We've had very few players like that, pretty much all our players play with a purpose and drive allied with their natural ability. Nothing wrong with giving the kid a bollocking every now and then to keep him focussed and improve his all-round game. Give them that discipline and focus now and it means once they get in the first team Sir Alex can give them the freedom they like.

It's not like Sir Alex has rigid tactics and demands of his players in the way a Benitez would, we provide them with the tools to make a difference and impact games and generally let the team work things out itself. At least that's the way I see it. So we're just building the foundations early on so it becomes second-nature.

That said I don't know if any of that applies to Januzaj because I've not watched enough of the reserves to tell these lads apart. I just know a couple of the Belgians get stuck in a lot more than I expected and one of them even looks like he likes getting a bit dirty and throwing his weight around. No idea which one's which.

I always confuse Januzaj with Vermijl. Not sure why. I was wondering why people in this thread were talking about him being able to run games from RB.

Tony you should post more often mate! You've been quiet for a while now :p

Who are your favourite players to watch at the under age levels? And who were you MOST confident about (say, over the last 10 years) in terms of becoming a first teamer?

I liked watching Michael Potts, Ravel Morrison, Matty James, Darren Fletcher, David Jones, Tom Heaton...loads of lads.

Morrison has thrown away his career...he was a cert...so too was Darren Fletcher.

In terms of your favourite players to watch I was thinking more about the current group :p

Who are yours?

My top 3 in no particular order are Januzaj, Pearson and Daehli (not taking into account the established u21s of the Keane twins, Lingard, cole etc)

Probably his best performance for the u21s so far last night. Yes Oldham were poor, but they did have some experienced players out including a 36 year old who Januzaj gave the run around to all game.

He oozed class roaming in from the left and linking play constantly. He scored his second goal in two games and also rattled the cross bar with a great bit of play near the end. He seems to have tapped in on that understanding between Lingard/Cole/Tunnicliffe which made for some brilliant one-touch triangles between them.

If he can put in performances like that consistently from now on then I think he will have made his first team debut by this time next year.

Bloody hell, that's a big shout. I didn't see the game yesterday as I was watching the England game but he's seemed too laconic in previous games I've seen him in to be that close to a first team game.

First Debut is not really that a big shout tbh. It could come as a sub in a league cup game, if we draw a lower league club at old Trafford.

He has already trained with the first team and made a friendly debut in that testimonial game pre-season.

Edit - Also, the likes of Lingard, Cole might go on loan too.

Lingard is a good little footballer.

Low his energy levels, touch and wanting to be involved in every attack.

I thought he was really impressive on the summer tour, he really stood out compared to his reserve level performances but then maybe that's because he had a bigger stage alongside better players. He does really need to bulk up a bit though because he's so lightweight so I hope he gets hitting those weights.

Impressive game from Januzaj last night. Paddy described him as 'probably our best player' and I would agree. When a lad just turned 18 stands out among our most experienced reserves, it's got to be a good sign.

There's no area of the game where he's not at least very good (mind you, I've never seen him head the ball!). He even got stuck in last night and won the ball back several times. One of his best attributes is his afterburner - he's running fast, and then suddenly finds an extra gear, and runs even faster. It takes him away from challenges effortlessly.

Like a previous poster, I wouldn't be surprised to see him get first team opportunities next season. With Morrison, you thought 'he's very good, but - character...' With Pogba 'he's very good, but - he fades in and out of games...' There's no 'but' with Januzaj that I can see. He's just a great prospect.

He jaunt wants the ball. All the time. He is always offering a pass and knows exactly where he is going next. Love it.

There's always some things about a youngster that will have to improve though, and Januzaj is still far from the finished product.

I love watching him play though, but it's no wonder why either him or Dæhli looked a bit off when playing with eachother as both are very intelligent players who are not used to play with eachother, thus taking up eachothers space. I'm sure that they'll be able to shine together with the reserves when they find a perfect understanding, and I'm sure it'll be a delight to watch. Much like Pogba and Morrison

I wouldn't be surprised to see Januzaj sooner than the rest of his age group at all, he just has something special. He seems to work hard and looks to have a good head on his shoulders. He is also proficient in the quick, technical style of football SAF 'wants to introduce'.

Let's see if he's playing against Tottenham today.

"It's great testament to the development work we do with young players. We had young Nick Powell and Adnan Januzaj in the Reserves on Monday and you say to yourself: 'These are definite Manchester United first-team players.'

"We can see that. They have outstanding qualities. They can see that in trusting us to map out their careers and help them and develop them then they can get to Danny’s level."

Powell impressed in a central attacking role, where he was often employed in his Crewe Alexandra days, against the Gunners' Under-21s while Belgian teenager Januzaj has started to shine at that level after being promoted from the Academy side.

Great News. :D

Brilliant. Didn't notice that. Would be great if he just made the squad on Monday, hopefully with Powell. If things go right, hopefully some of our youth players could get some game time. Although SAF isn't taking the FA cup for granted he wants to win it.

This season he wants to win everything more than usual it seems though.

Some lower league opposition at home and they had a better chance of getting involved. But doubt he'd take that many chances against Reading.

The whole article is about being patient too. :p

Both are fantastic talents but SAF is doing his confidence boosting thing. He also declared that Dong was the new Batistuta and that Macheda would be a player of the importance of C Ronaldo. That said, I expect Powell, at least, to make it here.

When did he say that about Dong ?

Btw, the interesting part of this is that it seems he mentioned them 2 Impromptu, while answering about Welbeck.

Usually he picks up 5/6 names in the U21's together and then mentions them.

Many years ago, it is one of SAF's craziest quotes.

I am not saying that both will not make it to the first team here, as both are exceptional talents, they are. I would just not read to much into Januzaj especially being involved in the first team anytime soon on the back of that quote.

Hopefully he can be the player we all thought Morrison could have been. He's brilliantly talented and if SAF is naming him, he must think he can handle the extra focus. Remember him coming on against Aberdeen at the start of the season and he looked a cut above most on the pitch. I've always been impressed when I've caught him on MUTV as well. I don't think he'll be involved on Monday, however.

I've never seen the Dong/Batistuta quote anywhere but on here, I'd like to see what he actually said. A google search brings up absolutely nothing.

I google it and found posts about Dong having all the attributes to be as good as Batitstuta.

I have a feeling he might make the bench for monday and get 5 at the end if we're comfortable. He likes to reward good efforts

I doubt he'll be in the squad on Monday, earlier on in the season Fergie mentioned Lingard in a possible future starting 11.

He does it with players he feels have the talent to make it, he did it with Pogba last year. But I do think after all the shambles with Pogba and Morrison he won't let another talent slip. My gut feeling is that Januzaj will come on the summer tour in the summer and will likely go on loan next year to hopefully come back the following season to challenge for a squad place.

Of all our attacking youngsters from the u18s of last year, I think he will be the first to have a crack at the first team, discounting Lingard and co from the reserves of course.

Can't find anything on a respectable source.

Same with the Roy Keane and David Jones quote.

He also said of Kleberson and I quote "I think he won the world cup for Brazil"

The only results on google are posters on RedCafe or other football forums - hardly the most reliable sources.

He wasn't great here sure, but that quote isn't far off. The three R's got all the praise for their attacking talent but Kleberson was very very instrumental.

Well he definitely said the Macheda - Ronaldo thing and he also said that Welbeck would play for England in the 2010 World Cup. He does say these things to boost confidence.
