Adnan Januzaj

Yep. He deserves it.

I hope Fergie gives him his chance quickly, and doesn't do another Pogba - lots of praise but no opportunities. (I'm sure Fergie had his reasons, but we did lose a top young player)

I don't know what his contract situation is, but it'd be heartbreaking if he became another Rossi/Pique/Morrison/Pogba. So far our recruitment of young foreign talent to the Academy has produced nothing. Let's hope Adnan changes our luck.

We'll have a strong pre-season squad this year won't we? Only disruptions for Hernandez (Gold Cup) and Kagawa (Confederations Cup) from what I can see.

Would be good for a few youngsters to be involved but there might be fewer opportunities than some previous years.

Definitely hope to see a bit of Januzaj.

Powell and Henriquez will probably go to the Fifa U20 WC and Zaha might to the U21 Euros. De Gea too possibly and Jones.

Chance for Rafael to be called up to Confed's cup too, though depends.

I was more confident of seeing him getting his first team debut this season as a Sub if we wrapped up the title early than going on tour tbh.

We usually are reluctant too take youngsters on tour and prefer to send them with the U21's unless there is a International tournament or Injury problems in certain positions.

Though, it is a longer tour with a lot of travel this time. Might get involved in the later pre season matches after coming back too.

Great to see Januzaj was in the dressing room celebrating with the first team along with Will Keane

Great management isn't it. It's basically a get your head down and work hard and this could be you. Must be good for the young guys to be part of that.

It tells you a lot about how high Fergie's hopes are for him. It'll be interesting to see how far off be is:

He's either:

A. Ready to play a few games for us next season as a squad player.
B. Ready to go on loan for the season, either Championship or a Small EPL Club.
C. Fergie will feel he's not quite ready for a loan and will keep him at the club to continue his education with the first team and maybe earn a January loan with the odd League Cup game.

Hopefully Fergie will give him the debut in one of the remaining game. I don't see any reason why this can't be possible.

Can see him being on the Bench in the last 2 games against West Brom/Swansea.

I'd have to go for C. He's one of those players that you feel might be good enough to bypass the championship loan. However, now would be a disastrous time for us to get him the wrong PL loan, so that he sits on the bench for five months. The best option is essentially to play for time - keep him here, give him a few games with the first team and keep him as a regular in the U21s. If his situation changes or an obviously perfect PL loan opportunity comes up, we can send him out in January.

With the way our loan deals have gone of late, I wouldn't send him out on loan.

I think a loan move would be good for him, but only to a team that plays good football and would be willing to give him a chance. Of course that's easy to say in practice but if he can then it would be great.

I have a feeling he'll have his premier league debut this season though, he would definitely suit our style of play. Not the biggest player in the world, but sometimes just sometimes size doesn't matter.

I'd agree with that.

He's on the cusp right now along with Powell who is more developed physically so I can see a Premiership or Championship loan for certain for him.

With Januzaj, while he doesn't mind getting stuck in I think he's still a bit too light weight and could struggle with regular Championship or Premiership football but the problem is that he will stagnate in the reserves as he's above that level already.

We miss our old links with Antwerp for players like him. Perhaps Molde could be a good option?

EDIT - I thought we'd cut ties with Antwerp or were going to but turns out we haven't?

^ I don't think the club feels the standard at Molde or Antwerp is high enough to benefit the players development more than staying here.

Molde would be a much better standard than Antwerp and also a much better standard than our reserves.

Aren't they in a bit of trouble at the moment? Or am I imagining that? Sending players on loan to struggling clubs is never a good idea. Especially if they'd be abroad, where Fergie wouldn't be able to exert much influence over the situation.

I cant remember if it was Ole or one of our coaching staff but I remember a comment made last year about Josh King going on loan to Molde and the point was made that he is better off here as the standard at Molde is no better than our reserves/first team training.

I don't think Januzaj will go on loan til January at the very least anyway.

Think the club is using the Antwerp link at the moment for players that get caught up between the U18's and U21's when they get too old for Academy football like Giverin, Van Velzen, Cofie and others..

Not everyone wants to go on loan there though, so it depends on that too.

Who was the last youth team player to break into the first team WITHOUT going on loan? It's vital that they experience a competitive first team environment even if they don't play every minute of every game.

No he isn't

As in break in regularly ? Fletcher probably. But then there was a lean period from him to Evans and then Welbeck/Cleverley.

Pogba would've you would guess, as he was 18.

No he isn't

He certainly stands out at reserve level.

I think they should just throw him in, and see if he swims. There's no big learning curve with Januzaj. He already plays like a pro - smart, no frills, shortest distance between two points is a straight line. If he's physically robust enough, he's good enough.

He looks very promising and talented at this level, but he hasn't made it his bitch like Macheda or Pogba had at the same age. He is certainly not at the stage yet where he's wasted at that level.

Agreed but thats not necessarily because he's any less talented than they were at his age, he's just less physically developed.

Not sure Pogba ever really made reserve level 'his bitch' in fairness, although there were times it looked like he could do if he wanted to. In terms of second-year academy players making the step up, Januzaj's been about as impressive as any in recent years I'd say, especially given he's often had to play in unusual roles and/or in a team shorn of other attacking talent to share the load.

Pogba? Definitely didn't. Macheda at the same age is debateable too.

Rossi was the last one to straightaway make the leap from U18's so early like this. Maybe Evans/Pique if you are counting defenders too.

Pogba was amazing in the reserves though, but in his last season didnt really seemed too bothered about it all.

Pogba had some good/very good games and some pretty poor ones. Some good highlight reel moments and clearly showed his talent but never took to it as consistently as Januzaj has done.

He's played across the front four in different positions and is constantly doing well plus working hard.

Its a lot harder for players like Januzaj to stand out in the reserves. His vision and passing range sometimes isnt apprieciated in a footballing sense. Id love to see him given a chance with the first team and see how he looks in that environment.

think I remember saying the same about Petrucci about 3 years ago! :(

Yep but I wouldn't say he'd suffer from a bit longer at that level. After all, he's only just got there.

Makes it difficult for anyone look that good when the shape of the team is all over the place due to the lack of strikers.

He's working hard, but isn't as influential as he could be given his level of talent. Hopefully he can develop physically over the summer and really impose himself next year.

Everytime I see this thread bumped I hope it's going to be with quotes from Fergie saying he'll get game time this season. It'd be good to see him get a run out and I think he deserves it. Whenever I see him play I see someone who is trying their best to do the right things, whether it's the classy or the nitty-gritty stuff.
