Adnan Januzaj

I really don't think the Singha XI is a "higher level of competition" to the U21s.

Not in terms of quality, perhaps, but in terms of the bigger stage, the more intense physical contest, and the greater pressure (to impress Moyes if he wants to get any first team action this season).

Also whilst some pre-season friendlies are basically training exercises, I thought the Singha XI were decent competitors in terms of their defending and their work rate. Horrible finishing, of course, but then it's the defence which Januzaj had to worry about.

Should have used his hands

Carrick just said on MUTV that Januzaj has been impressing the lads in training for the last week or two, came back looking really sharp, and is impressing the coaches too.

Really hope he continues like he's started this preseason.

Is it too much to expect him to really break through into the first team? And by breaking into the first team I mean 15-20 appearances by the end

In terms of the actual quality which our academy is producing more and more at the moment, we really are overdue another promising youngster breaking into the first team for good. First Morrison was rightfully sent on his way, then we lost Pogba.

This is the one lads, and there are plenty more coming up behind him too.

He needs to fill out but promising stuff. What is his best position?

And promising as he was, there's so much more to come just as soon as he feels confident enough to show it. Those of you who don't get to see much of the U21s and U18s are in for a treat.

I think it'll still be a case of maybe only one or two making it from this group. Maybe Ben Pearson would be my prediction. As well as Januzaj, obviously.

In terms of attacking/midfield players, I would have said Januzaj, Pearson, Daehli and Pereira (slightly younger, yes, but he plays with the others.) Daehli's gone, obviously (though perhaps not for good). But that's still three who, given the right opportunities, have every chance of making it.

Defenders are harder to predict until you actually see them at first-team level, and fully physically developed. Keane has a decent shout.

Pearson is the exact type of midfielder we could do with to cover Carrick. Shame he's not a couple years older.

Possibly coming inside from the right but he can play anywhere across the front from what I've seen of him.

Great nice to have some academy players in and around the first team squad. Looking forward to seeing more of him this season.

It also emerged that United face a battle to keep young Belgian starlet Adnan Januzaj. The 18-year-old – who impressed in United’s defeat in Bangkok at the weekend – began talks about a new contract last season but that was under previous manager Ferguson.

The teenager wants to stay at United but is attracting interest from Barcelona and Juventus.

Stumbled across this but it seems like a nothing story in honest (hopefully anyway!).

He lacks a little pace to be a winger for us but I'd like to see him as an attacking floating midfielder in a three-man midfield at first team level. Has a touch of Ozil about him, reads the game really well and able to dictate the tempo of a game even at this tender age. Interesting to see how he fares... funnily enough under Fergie, I reckon he'd have struggled as we didn't really know what to do with midfielders who like to float across the midfield i.e. Kagawa but I think Moyes immediately recognised that is the way to get the best out of Adnan and gave him full licence to roam the pitch.

Really want to see how Kagawa is utilised by Moyes.

I agree with you on how to get the best out of Adnan, he's just so versatile, he's someone that needs to just come and collect the ball and move.

Actually his pace looks fine to play from wide areas. He's obviously not a winger though, he'd play inside like Silva

I honestly think that he could become a CM, given time. Once he fills out and learns how to apply himself to the game properly with a bit of experience, then I think he could become a bit of a Paul Scholes type in the centre. His long balls are fantastic too, for anyone that hasn't seen much of him.

@ Brightonian, Pereira still has a lot to prove, in my opinion. Looked cracking for the Belgium youth, but has underwhelmed a bit in comparison since arriving here. Still, it's his first season so there's still plenty of time for him. I do think Pearson is a proper footballer, the type that can make a name for themselves here.

Hard to believe, he's only 18 years old. Bigger potential than Powell's in him.

Bulking up and better reading of the game will come in time and we gonna have a superbly creative one in the team.

Daily Mail reckon we face a battle to hold onto Januzaj with Juve and Barca wanting him....:wenger:

Heard that a couple months ago, I don't believe it. Januzaj is different to the rest, you can just tell how much he wants it. I

Guardian, Times and Telegraph reckon we have started talking about a new contract with him and he wants to stay.

Btw I think his contract is till 2015 rather than 2014. He turned professional in 2012 and I can't see the club giving him just a 2 yr pro deal. All the reports from Belgium also said he has signed for us for four years.

Nah, Periera has been very good for the Academy since he's arrived. Showed real promise, and had a better season than Daelhi. He's still young (only 17), but I expect him to do well again this term. He's a cracking player.

I wouldn't say so at all, he's been excellent whenever I've seen him, even though he's generally been playing above his age group. I don't agree with dr.twinny that he had a better season than Daehli, who was fantastic. But that's mainly because he played less consistently and for three different teams, so he never really had the chance to become the main man for anyone. But he was always good.

I think for the first half of this year we need to put him in the U18s and keep him there. Even if we get rid of the dead weight in the U21s - Bebe, Macheda etc - I don't really see him getting a regular starting berth there (not surprising at 17 years old), and I think that's what he needs now, a regular place in one team.

I wonder if we'll blood him on the left-wing considering we have no actual left-footed wingers bar Giggs. I hope we get to see some Januzaj in the Premier League next year.

If he keeps playing as he did in the last friendly, then surely he'll be given something.
