Anderson and Cleverley have United on right track
One of the main themes of discussion over the off-season, in the wake of Manchester United's defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League final, has been how United can close the gap to Pep Guardiola's side. According to some, it is the final challenge of Sir Alex Ferguson's career.

United were certainly taught a footballing lesson at Wembley in May, but it is important to point out that 'closing the gap' is not necessarily the same as replicating Barcelona's style of football. Attempting to ape the style of Barcelona is likely to play into their hands. When Guardiola's side are finally knocked off their perch, it will probably be by a side using a tactic that defeats tiki-taka, rather than an imitation of it. Their most notable loss, to Inter in the 2009-10 Champions League semi-final, was to a side that didn't even attempt to retain the ball by the second leg.

That said, ball retention is something Ferguson feels United need to improve on, and the statistics from the 2-1 win over West Brom indicate that things are on the right track. Anderson completed 55 of his attempted 57 passes throughout the game, while his central midfield colleague Tom Cleverley finished with 58 from 64, giving an impressive combined completion rate of 93%. By way of contrast, in United's previous trip to The Hawthorns on New Year's Day, also a 2-1 United win, Anderson's figure was down at 76%, demonstrating a marked improvement.--Guardian Chalkboards

And yet there are some people who will argue Ando isn't improving...

As has been pointed out, this midfield combination is fairly new to each other, and need to develop an understanding. Like Keane and Scholes when first paired it will take a few games, rather than training sessions to understand when to push forward and when not.

What didn't help Anderson yesterday, and this isn't a slight on anyone, was in fact Fabio. Where as Evra pushes on down the wing, and runs straight back. The amount of times Fabio laid off the ball to Young and trotted into the box, giving Anderson no option but to drop further back to cover than normal. An example though not great, would be to look at the second goal. Had the ball got through the WBA defence it would have been Fabio at the back post popping it into the net.

However, we won, and whilst we can nitpick the games of individuals, that's twice they've played together and both times we won. This was 3 points, sure we can do better than that performance, but that will come with more playing time together, not only in the midfield, but also the whole team.

This would be ideal imo.

Young---------Rooney---------Nani

------Anderson--------Cleverley----
---------------Carrick--------------

Evra---Evans/Jones--Smalling--Fabio

Looks great on paper.

Yes please, that's what we should do. 4-4-2 restricts both Cleverley and Anderson and makes the team quite rigid anyway.

I thought both he and Cleverley left us a bit open defensively yesterday, but hopefully it's just a case of them sorting the partnership out and learning how the other plays.

Same here, needed one of them to be a bit more disciplined and cover the other. Still, there were encouraging signs from both of them, and at times the two together were great. Was quite impressed with the passing statistics for both players, particualarly Anderson who only misplaced a pass twice.

they left us exposed through both attacking at the same time but i dont see the need to appoint one the DM and the other AM myself. They can interchange as long as they have the discipline to watch eachothers back and one sits when the other bombs on. This will come with experience so i hope we persevere with playing them together myself as its the only way they'll learn

the rebirth of the box-to-box midfielder

This.

Anderson's acceleration is fantastic. He seems really confident this season, very much hoping it's a breakthrough season for him.

He's still only 23, that's young for a centre midfielder, he may not hit his peak for another five years.

I genuinely believe that the only thing that could stop him from cementing a place in our starting XI is injuries, if he stays fit then he'll make it.

Was really good. Thought he started playing a little too safe in the second half but overall he did everything well. Looks to be carrying on from his last season which was his best so far.

He's playing really well right now and long may it continue. Pissed me off when he was called for a handball after he outmuscled the monster Tchoyi and then Tchoyi pulled his shirt to drag him down which caused the handball..

Keeps up this form and he'll be a sure starter most games. Just hope SAF doesn't start with the over rotation because when Ando gets a run of games like he has since the start of pre-season, he really shows his class.

Oh and his corners in the first part of the game, gave Foster a real torrid time.

59 passes vs WBA, 55 successful. 93,2 %.

96,5 % considering two of the four misplaced passes were corner kicks.

Good stuff.

That's excellent.

You can always tell whether Anderson's on form by his pass completion stats. When he's at his best he rarely misplaces a pass.

Also worth stressing that this was a decent performance away from home. Hallelujah!

An inspired, injury free and lean Anderson would really save the club some serious cash. Does he have it in him to be another Edgar Davids?

That's racist.

Was really good defensively in the first. Was superb overall in the second.

He was great at winning the ball back in the first half, but lacked a bit of quality on the ball. Then in the second half he turned into an absolute monster.

I love him.

He was excellent tonight, hopefully he's going to kick on and have the season we know he's capable of!

Me too. I had a look at half time and saw some bitching about him. Couldnt believe it. I thought he was excellent. But then went fecking crazy in the 2nd and was everywhere

Took control of midfield, he looks much fitter and after a very good pre-season he has carried on that form. Maybe playing him with a more mobile midfielder (Cleverley) has helped him?

I'd love to see how many km he ran today. He was everywhere. Stamina is obviously no longer a problem.

Good performance, and the goal will do him the world of good. When he's playing well we always seem to play well because he adds such a dynamic style of play to our midfield, one that none of our other players have. If he gets that bit of consistency, you won't be able to leave him out. Simple as that.

Can people shut up about his stamina issues now? He's been finishing games strongly for awhile now.
