Carrick, Berbatov, Park, Anderson. All been bumped after the match. No bump for our poorest player Phil Jones. How about that:wenger:

Jones is 19 years old and has been here a few months. Theyre all experienced players who've been here years. Big difference

Is normal service being resumed with our man Anderson?

Time will tell.....

Strange game. I thought he did well on the ball but defensively we were cut wide open. Not sure what that was down to and what instructions Anderson was given. He was often found pressing the centre backs and keeper.

No there's not. Anderson wasn't that bad, Berba played 9 minutes and Park came on when it was 2-2. Jones pretty much gave away the third goal on his own and a whole shambles of defending from him and Evra and Rio conceded our 2nd.

The four defenders that started the match were definitely worse than anyone else on the pitch in terms of performance.

It's difficult to describe just how shockingly naive/useless he is when the opposition has the ball. I was watching from North Tier 2 tonight and the amount of times he let players run off him had to be seen to be believed. And that was in the first half. The second half? Anyone who thinks this guy doesn't have poor stamina needs their head checking. It's like playing with ten men.

He will have a stormer against Norwich (probably by watching from the bench :nervous: )

I reckon Fergie will recognise that Anderson could benefit from playing a "gimmie" match, to get his confidence back up.

That said, Basel were supposed to roll over.

Like most of the team, he didn't do his job defensively. This, bizarelly, included the usually so reliable Carrick yesterday, which suggest to me that it was a case of underestimating the opponent and lack of concentration.

However, Ando was brilliant offensively I thought. Some of his cross-field passes were Scholes-esque, he always made himself available for the ball and he looked to drive us on with incisive passing and running with the ball. Our best performer in the first half I thought.

I agree. I think Anderson was great on the ball and going forward. But like the rest of the team he too was naive and complacent defensively. Honestly, I can't claim to know what our tactic was in that second half. It was all too haphazard for me to say. There was a point where Anderson was pressing the keeper with Welbeck and Giggs further back. Was this a specific tactic to push him further forward?

We have known for a long, long time that our midfield, with respect to the Champions League, is underpar...

We're fortunately very good in every other area but we cannot win the CL with this midfield

What? You're completely missing my point here. Jones can't be expected to perform at the same level on a consistent basis as those players because he's barely been at this club. The others have been here for years and should be far more open to criticism, they're also quite a bit older than him too.

Comparing Jones to them should and saying he should be criticized as much as them for his performance is ridiculous.

I think it's about balance. We are getting the fluidity from central midfielder that we've lacked in recent seasons but sacrificing the defensive solidarity from the same in doing so. How we work on striking that balance will be interesting to see. Will we withdraw and revert to the tried and tested formula or try to succeed in both aspects.

How have we managed such a brilliant record in the past five seasons then?

I thought he was very good offensively, which is a promising sign imo because that was part of his game I had real doubts about. Now the question is was he meant to be pushing further forward, or was he meant to be playing as a defensive pair with Carrick?

Yesterday was the very definition of complacency in my opinion. A good wake up call ready for Norwich.

I think it was the former in the second half and the latter in the first. In the first they were both very very deep but in the second Anderson really pushed up and while he started dictating play more, he was out of position defensively. Not that it excuses his or any other players lack of defensive discipline, mind you. We defended poorly as a team regardless of the tactics.

I thought Anderson was ok last night. I think the assists that Giggs got are masking the fact that other than that he was our worst central midfielder by quite a distance. The amount of times he gave the ball away was ridiculous.

I'm not convinced by Anderson. He looks good beating players around the halfway line, but once he approaches the opposition's box, he seems to run out of ideas, or trying that scoop pass thing (which Scholesy pulled off brilliantly for Rooney to score against Milan ages ago.)

Also he's too one footed.

Hopefully he will develop further and become a bit cleverer around the opposition's box.

This

This went right the way through the team. We're trying to play a slightly different way, but 2 things went wrong last night.

1. inexperience in defence: let's face it fabio and jones would not have played in the back line had everyone else been fit - we're missing rafael, evans, smalling, vidic. i feel they're being encouraged to attack, which is good. but when the fullbacks attack either one of the central midfielders has to sit. So the defence was exposed - and Jones not used to Europena football yet - and Ferdinand still playing his way back from injury.

2. the central midfield is getting used to itself. I have no doubt that had cleverley have played and we'd have won the game (the same goes for had evans, vidic, rafael, smalling).

carrick always starts late. i thought he had a good game last night, but he's now trying to move out of his comfort zone of just sitting in front of the back four and playing more progressively. started to see that last night but then anderson needs to know where he fits in with that, and carrick needs to know where he fits in with what anderson is doing (basically knitting the team together all the way up the pitch - which is exhausting)

We got the balance wrong last night. But do you know what?

I'd rather they tried what they're trying and drop the odd point than played safe and didn't get anywhere near the potential because they were afraid of making mistakes (think England!)

I actually think that what we're trying to do this season is quite special. We may not get there this season - perhaps the next or the one after that - after all exceptional teams evolve!

Yeah, he was genuinely poor today. At least he got the goal that won it!

2 goals in 33 league matches in the last 2 seasons.

2 goals in 7 matches this season - the performance isn't one he'll want to remember too fondly, but the goal was crucial and he took it well.

TBF to him, there were times he looked up to pass it quickly and nobody moved. At times Fletcher hid behind the opposition and didnt make himself avaialble.

Ando/Fletch doesnt work. Ando/Cleverley does.

His passing technique is sooo obvious. He makes himself so big before passing its like he needs to put power to put it out wide that sometimes it gets caught out. Doesnt help when he tries to move it quickly and had Park/Chico/Fletcher rather than Young/Danny/Cleverley.

Clear difference for Ando.

I'm usually one of his biggest defenders but today he was genuinely poor. There was a spell of a minute where he gave the ball away thrice. Anyway, he got us what could be a crucial goal come the end of the season so I'm happy.

Yeah he was poor no doubting that. The whole team was pretty much poor. But I think some combos do not work and Ando/Fletch is one of them. Carrick/Ando works better than Fletch/Ando imo.

Goal machine! Sounds like nobody played well but hopefully he's rediscovered his scoring touch and will chip in with a few goals from midfield this season.
