Anderson will score more than 10 goals in all competitions next season.

They didn't really struggle to cope with him the last time around.

Watch the final again! See if you think we were a better team once we took Ando off :smirk:

No, we fell apart completely, I agree; it's just he did not give them such a hard time in the first half.

And by the way, I'd have Anderson on the bench because I do believe he's a better option against them than Scholes who could get sent off within 10 minutes.

But we have to be careful and not to expect too much; in my opinion, Anderson is not a better player than he was in 2009.

he was awful last time around

but, i think he is coming into form at the right time and has now added goalscoring! This could be the making of him in this game

Man, awful underestimates how bad he was.

His form has come against some really poor sides, if I remember in 09, he was in a bit of form before the final aswell.

I think it's too much of a risk to play him our biggest game of the season.

Mate Anderson was shocking, he literally contributed nothing.

Ill second him, watch it again. He had one or two stray passes after Eto'o scored but besides that he was far from terrible, and was pretty effective at breaking down their attacks

Some people need to re-watch the final again, we were poorer in the second half without him. Him and Carrick did pretty decent in the first half, contributed more than Giggs did in that CAM role. Doesn't mean he's worthy of a start, but letting Iniesta run past him once, he was generally quite decent.. but thats not enough against a side like Barcelona.

Have you watched it again Boss? I'm guessing no!

I was in your camp too for a year or so after, Anderson being subbed at HT convinced us all he was dogshit but we fecking fell apart without him and we didn't actually play too bad in the 1st half.

Pretty much everyone I've got to watch the game again has the same opinion so I suggest you watch it.

Thirded, he moved the ball through midfield to attack quite well and was helpfully combative (too much so on a couple of occasions). Certainly better than I remembered.

Certainly in the first half I thought of the three midfielders Giggsy just didn't influence the game as he could and was the worst by a distance.

I've always felt Carrick genuinely had a decent game, he was clearly told to look for the early pass and try to get Rooney in behind or 1v1 and the margin of error in a game like that is very small, a couple of inches shorter and Carrick could've had an assist for a couple of balls he played to Rooney. Yet because he gave the ball away carelessly a couple of times and these really difficult balls didn't come off he was apparently ruined by Barca.

Agreed on the Carrick verdict there... I re-watched it recently and was shocked to find that Carrick's forward passing was quite adventurous and only fractions off being genius, and that he didn't have anywhere near the number of wayward passes in his own half that I recalled him having.

Agreed.

Good to see that the guys who have re-watched the game have a much clearer view of what happened that evening. Goes to show that watching a game whilst full of emotion isn't really the best time to make any judgements.

Fair enough lads, I can never bring myself to watch the whole 90 again.

All I remember Anderson doing was being passed around like he wasn't there, trying to close down but failing dramatically and having very little influence on the game what so ever.

but it was a long time ago. I wish I can find his individual highlights but my youtube skills are failing me tonight.

Man up, you big jessie... we're about to get one over Barca. Surely that lessens the sting of seeing them have at us in 09 again?

Cmon don't fool yourself. He's managed to get a few goals recently but I wouldn't make such a generic statement regarding the fact. I wouldn't include Anderson on Saturday with the notion that he'll add a goal threat.

His energy could be a welcome addition though. His acceleration through the middle third could put pressure on Barca's high defensive line. I think he should come on as a subsititute along with Nani to stretch the game when Barca tire, which is inevitable if we get to extra time

The worst thing was that Messi goal came against the run of play too, we'd just started feeling our way into it and had a good 10-15 minutes of play going for us. And then right after the goal Ronaldo had that chance from a couple of yards out...it just wasn't our night.

It is interesting how the result can influence our perception of the game so much over time - we only had one less shot and they only had 53% possession, not remotely close to how I remember it or how it's been painted continuously. Even the 'Ronaldo just went for glory every time'...he had just one shot in the second half, that one from a few yards out, and every shot of his in the first half was from a reasonable distance and wasn't far off.

More of the same from Carrick with a hugely threatening Hernandez and we're onto a goal there, surely. Huge game for Rooney I think, one of the biggest of his career - if he shines like he has done recently in front of the entire world it could really influence opinions. He's not been anywhere near his best in the last two finals being moved about so let's see if he can turn it on in the hole.

This really shouldn't be in the Anderson thread.

Have we sold him then?

All this endless chatter about signing new midfielders and our deficiencies, I don't think I've seen the name of our 23 year old brazillian, who has just had his best season yet, mentioned more than once. Admittedly he's developed something of a Jekyll and Hyde persona, being usually terrible away, and then probably one of the best midfielders in the league at home, but you can't ignore just how good he has been in those home games. He was never going to start at Wembley, but if we want players to combat Barcelona then a midfielder with boundless energy who also has a keen eye for a pass is surely right up there. I'm not going to ignore his limitations, after all that energy wanes after 60 minutes and that passing sometimes goes haywire, but he's still young enough to improve and surely shouldn't be being so readily dismissed when considering the future of our midfield as he apparently is by the "we have to sign 2 world class CMs!" crowd.

And get this, he might actually have a pre-season this year.

He's in the preliminary Brazil squad for the Copa America so that won't help with the pre-season.

I hope he gets into it. Sometimes a tournament will help a player. Especially one who has not played loads of football recently

on paper, argentina's squad looks a lot stronger, esp in midfield and attack.

however, I will be support o selecao.

Why no kaka? He's fit again.

Did anyone hear of Ando being injured? Didn't feature for a single minute in Brazil's friendlies vs. Holland and Romania.

I might be biased, but I reckon Anderson is a superior choice to pretty much anyone Brazil has in central midfield these days.

Douglas Costa did not start in Shakhtar's Ukrainian Cup victory over Dynamo Kiev. Fernandinho, Jadson, Willian, Eduardo and Luis Adriano started as Shakhtar's Brazilian 5, with Costa coming on at 90+5. Not sure that he should be in the Brazil squad if he's not good enough to start for Shakhtar in such an important game at the moment.

Willian has done well, but my understanding is that he always plays better in European games, but is not nearly as good in the Ukrainian league matches.

Basically Lucas Leiva, Ramires, Sandro, Elano and Elías (At. Madrid) got picked ahead of him to go to Copa América. Like I said, he didn't even get a minute in the last two games.

Now, either he's carrying an injury or didn't hit off well with the new coach. I think he's a better choice than all 5 of those players.

In that case I don't see the problem. Might actually get a pre-season with us instead of playing for Brazil and getting injured. If he is injured after all then

I'd prefer they didn't pick him so that we can have him for a proper pre season for the first time.

Am I right if I say that once a Brazilian player goes the wrong side of 30 these days their services to the NT is no longer needed? It always seem like Brazil is bringing in new players, I guess they are one of few National teams that can actually be in a constant rebuild without affecting the player quality much.
