what form back?
He has never shown any decent long run of form.
And dont give me he needs games bollox becasue if he was good enough or capable of playing a long run of games he would be in the 11 wouldnt he.

Im sick of hearing about potential and he is only 24, he is bang average as was Gibson and I expect he will be gone this summer or next summer.
Its clear we need midfield re-inforcements and he isnt it. People think that he plays for United therefore must be or just about be World Class, he is miles away from that.
He is 24, not 19, he is almost at his peak age of physical fitness. Do we develop and nurture a player for 10 years in the hope that when he is 28 he will be the finsished article and give 2 good seasons. Is that a good return.
When are we supposed to see this mercurial talent that so much effort has gone into developing.

Just sell him at this stage and stop wasting time.

Agree with all this. I'm usually a bit overly optimistic about our young players, but there should be a line to draw somewhere. He's been here for 6 years as first teamer, but not much improvement I can see from him. His lack of 'football intelligent' is really not suitable for a United central midfielder.

As Pete said, he isn't a central midfielder. I don't know why Fergie keeps playing him there.

Joking apart I don't think Anderson's issue is fitness, his stamina isn't up to playing in CM which requires a lot of long-distance running power rather than explosive bursts. I don't really know why you persist in playing him as a CM.

It was a ridiculous idea in the first place to make him into a restricted centre mid, that's why I can't really blame Anderson himself if he fails here.

Anderson clearly has talent and potential to be a very good player.

Still think it's wishful thinking to believe he will become a cornerstone at United, but it's understandable that people have hope.

Has Van Persie ever had such a consistent and effective period like the last 18 months? Genuine question. If he hasn't, and he was able to now, at the wrong side of his twenties, then certainly other players can as well. It just doesn't seem very likely, but it's clearly possible if the talent and skill are there.
If he stops getting injured, he will finally become consistent. It's that simple. Whenever he hits form he is disrupted by injury and starts all over again.

Don't get all the Anderson hate. I can understand people being disappointed in that he hasn't become one of the top players in the world, as his early promise suggested he could be. However, he's been a vital squad player during the most successful period in our history. He's put in some electrifying performances on occasion and plenty of very good ones. Due to fitness inconsistencies he's never made the position his own, but in an age of such heavy rotation, he's played a key role. Carrick was a year older than Anderson is now when he signed for us and has given us 5/6 excellent(ish) seasons. If Anderson manages to peak over the next three years he'll go down as a very big (no pun intended) player for us and an excellent signing. I have a feeling that with age will come added maturity, an improved work ethic and a better run of fitness.

Meh. Granted I fell asleep for a large chunk of the second half, but he was 'meh' at best from what I saw in the first. Not a bad squad player to have I suppose, but Cleverley is the better player by quite a distance.

Like I said in the match day thread, he doesn't pass like he's a central midfielder. He passes like he plays in an advanced role and can try through balls and outlandish passes all the time, and giving the ball away isn't an issue. I think we made a big mistake trying to turn him into an outright central midfielder, and I can't see it ever paying off now.

Don't think it's gonna happen for him at this club, shame really as he was such a promising player when we signed him.

Agreed, his best abilities are attacking - playing him in a restricted two in midfield brings out his very worst, especially against a team with 10 behind the ball.

I wouldn't be surprised if Carrick made more passes into RvP today than he did to Anderson.

Agreed. He needs to move on. He's good enough to be a squad player for United, but neither Ando himself nor Fergie could possibly want that as the best he can do. No doubt Ando would excel for a Brazilian club.

Time to rip the Band Aid, Fergie.

He's got all the attributes to be a central midfielder though, the only thing he's lacking is the discipline to be a bit more conservative, positional discipline and that's very much upto him, it's very much something you can learn. If you put him in an advanced role he has that glaring weakness of finishing and getting into goal scoring positions. So I think it's the perfect position for him but he's just not helping himself.

Unfortunately this summer probably isn't the summer for him to leave since we should be losing both Scholes and Fletcher. Anderson hasn't been great this season but keeping them and letting Anderson go would be a mistake.

Poor, today. In danger of being left behind. Shame because he has it in him to be our best midfielder.

I felt he really needed to take his chance to today

He's completely stopped doing the thing he's good at, which is picking up the ball and changing the pace of the game.

Don't want to write him off yet, but that was one shite match. He's usually decent at home, against these teams.

Two huge games this week and I don't really expect him to start either after his performance today. Will need to do better when he gets his next opportunity if he is to be trusted in the big matches at the business end of the season.

Pogba would have stayed if he were given Anderson's game time, last year. Water under the bridge, they say. But I still can't get over it, every time I watch any of them play.

He certainly had it in him to be our best player, don't think that's achievable any more. I think he can be a good squad player for us but no more than that, it'd be better for his own career if he left. Unfortunately we'll probably need to keep him for a while yet as we'll have to replace Scholes, Fletcher and Giggs over the next couple of years.

It wasn't the sort of game that he excels in, he's best when he can run at teams with the ball from deeper areas, but it was so congested due to Norwich's tactics that he looked frustrated by the need for patient play and subsequently lost the ball now and then.

I don't mind him staying, but I don't want us to not go for midfielders now "because we've got Anderson". Tell him to improve drastically and secure a first team spot or face being a bit-part player.

The thing is, does he? I keep seeing people saying things like this, but where does it come from? It just seems like the same old predictable line that is trotted out over and over again about his potential, based on, well not much really. Certainly not his performances.

When it come to Anderson people seem to talk about the player they wanted, and still want him to be. Not the player that he actually is.

And this isn't a dig at you directly at all, its just something I've noticed a lot on here from many people.

The coming months will probably decide his future. If he carries on like this, Fergie will surely decide enough is enough. One or two good to great performances in a sea of indifferent ones isn't good enough. He needs to start performing well consistently. His time is running out. His performances aren't necessarily bad but we should really aim higher than that.

It's obviously difficult only playing every few games but the problem is that he has to take those chances and not be next-to-anonymous when he gets them. He doesn't have such outstanding ability, or a history of being a top player for us, which would allow him to play so poorly so often and still retain his place. The really frustrating thing is that there seems to be no rhyme or reason as to when he plays well. To use a phrase that was (unfairly I thought) used about Rooney earlier in the season: "he doesn't look fully in control of his ability". There's no sustained consistency.

As soon as I heard Rooney, Evans and Cleverley all unanimously agree he was the laziest trainer I lost any sympathy I might have had. Given how he's fighting for his future, given his naturally bulky physique you'd think he'd be giving his all.

Very mixed game from him today. Seemed to mix totally miss hitting passes with passes that totally bypassed the Norwich midfield into Rooney/Kagawa.

I didn't think he was great against Norwich, but a lot of posters aren't necessarily appreciating the difficulty of coming in and out of the side - it's really difficult to build form. RvP said as much recently on the issue of rotation. Given his limited outings this season, I'd say we've seen more than enough from Anderson to justify keeping him. I feel for him to an extent because his form was excellent and he was out shining Cleverley for a good period prior to his injury against Reading.

The thing is though, difficult or not, if you spend a lot of your time injured, or are for whatever reason unable to hold down a permanent place in the side - be one of the team constants, like Carrick, Rooney, Evra or Rafael - you have to be able to seize your chances. It isnt much of an excuse, how hard it is to do it, things are what they are and he has to shine in the circumstances as he finds them. On the evidence we have there is no reason to predict him suddenly holding down a regular starting position, so he is going to regularly find himself having to come in after an absence and find form quickly. If he cant do that it is another mark against him, really.

I like Anderson, I really do. I cant think of many players I really wanted to succeed at United more. I stop short of calling for him to be sold, because of what he can do when he is on form. It is hard to blame someone when the cornerstone of their problems relate to injuries that are outside their control. But relying on him feels like madness.

I have no issue with that - but his general fitness is poor, even when fit. To me there is no excuse for that, its just down to hard work.

This is actually an extremely good post.

Back in December after the injury I said that he needs to a) come back quickly and b) regain that form instantly else be in and out of the team at the business end of the season. Really disappointing that he wasn't out for so long but that he still hasn't regained any of that great form back yet and it's now March.
