Was good but I really don't know what to say given the space Schalke gave us. Must be a wingers dream.

He was good, calm, composed and made the right decisions as he usually does. But bar a sublime cross in to Hernandez in the first half he wasn't that clinical, and his lack of a left foot made him a bit too predictable against the full back who kept making him cut inside and play a pass most of the time.

I've seen him play a lot better than that, against better teams. Not sure where all the praise is coming from tonight.

Don't agree about the full back making him cut inside. It's funny though, because people complain he's too one dimensional and then he spends a game mixing it up with cutting in and out and the full back is credited with it. He was brilliant tonight, he absolutely crucified that left back.

He wasn't THAT good.

Thought he was great personally.. only gripe I had was that one move where he was clean through on goal on his left and he didn't know what on earth to do because of his one-footedness and chose to pass back to a Shalke defender instead.

Apart from that.. stunning defensive display, amazing first touch, decent delivery (he's improving on his curlers)and a beast in possession, very hard to shift him off it tonight.

Was very good today though there were many times where he got into great positions or beat the left back and then put in a poor cross. Once he can get his crosses to last seasons levels again that right wing spot is his without a doubt.

Reminds me of the UNITED movie, when Jimmy Murphy tells young Charlton to spend an hour every day kicking the ball against the wall with both feet, so he learns to use his left as well.

Frankly was a bit frustrated with his final ball today - he could do what he wanted all day but, some how couldn't get that really threatening ball in. But, the man is a beast and everything else about his play today was just superb.

Oh and I think I had a gay moment when he was walking around shirtless at the end of the match.

Anyone else think that he is already a better player than last season.

I'm wondering if he's put on a kilo or two of muscle from being forced to spend so much time in the gym?

He was always very strong but I don't remember him being such a dominant physical force as he seems to be these days. Just needs to get the tiniest part of his body between his fullback and the ball and they're on their arse before they know it. He rag-dolled Leighton Baines at the weekend and did something similar a few times last night.

thought he was excellent. Dont think its a coincidence that the team has started playing well since he and Rooney got back in tandem

It's weird.

He helped us counter rapidly alot, but I thought he lacked end product and was wasteful in good areas.

I was frustrated with his performance and some of his crosses were piss poor.

I don't see how he was fantastic, he's capable of much more.

His fitness and performances since coming back from injury have been unbelievable. I was sure we'd not see anything like his best til next season ( if at all ) after such a serious injury but he's performances have been so comsistant and he looks as fit as somebody at the start of the season. Great Stuff

I don't. He was doing this last season too until he got his injury.

I think whats even more impressive is that he's come back into the team after recovering from a nasty injury and played like he's never been gone.

Not only his form good but his fitness has been amazing. Fantastic attitude he has.

He was great last night but was hit and miss with his final ball, which is usually so good.

Fergie said it was an "unbelievable performance".

Don't get me wrong here, he was good, very good, but unbelievable? Fergie always hypes up his players Brwned, surely that should be obvious.

He was brilliant defensively, which is the main reason he got the nod over other wingers, and he proved why he should have gotten the nod. But his final ball was pretty poor tonight, not as concise as it usually is, one beautiful cross into Hernandez early on aside. He didn't really do a lot other than that, bet the full back once or twice but never delivered it to a striker. Passed very well, great first touches.

I've seen much better games from him since he came back, Chelsea for one, and they've far superior full backs to Schalke, who, let's be honest are absolutely dire defensively. He didn't put a foot wrong all game, which is why he's getting great reviews, but as an attacking threat, (which is still his main focus, despite his defensive duties, is it not?) he didn't offer too much.

Don't agree about the full back making him cut inside. It's funny though, because people complain he's too one dimensional and then he spends a game mixing it up with cutting in and out and the full back is credited with it.

All he did when he cut inside was pass the ball, bar one run I recall where he beat a defender but didn't shoot on his left foot, wonder why...

He had a great game, but sometimes you do have to wonder... Surely any fullback playing him should just send him onto his left, forcing him to pass? Do full backs every week just have no idea of the winger they are coming up against (it also happens vs Lennon/Bale/Walcott etc)?

Aye though tbf Sir Bobby was one of the great Two-Footed players of all time.. no one is asking Valencia to reach that level, but jesus lad.. at least improve it to the point you're willing to have a strike with it when there is no other option and you're in on goal.

It is crazy how one footed he is, I can't think of many modern players in our team over the age of 21/22 so reliant on one foot. Even when it's easier just to make a simple left footed pass, he opts to use the right foot instead.

Ffs, this again. I can think of at least two players just as one-footed who were on the pitch yesterday - Giggs and Evra.

Or how about improving it to the point, where he's able to hit a crisp, accurate 12 yard pass smack onto the toe of a fast advancing striker who can beat two defenders with his first touch and score an important goal?

Like he did against West Ham, for example?

He is still effective even though he is apparently "predictable". Predictable he may be but they still can't stop him. Funny that Giggs should make his one-footedness his excuse for missing chances tonight as he has done throughout his career.

Giggs isn't. Evra probably is.

Anyway, I'm not meaning to diss him. He's a great asset, one footed or not.

Giggs is very one footed, probably not as much as Valencia granted, but still very one footed. He even joked in the post match interview that he was glad when a chance finally fell to his left foot.

As for 'all Valencia did when he cut inside was pass'; so? He keeps moves going with incredible consistency, and he cut inside to lay Fabio off numerous times last night, having taken the fullback out wide leaving Fabio in space to make the cross. It's effective, it always is, and yet still he's criticised for being too one footed.

Another great performance. Even when he loses the ball he's snapping at the heels of the full back wanting to win the ball back. Great team player with a very unselfish attitude.

It doesn't matter if you are two footed whats more important is - does the player have a brain to make the right decisions of when to pass and when to cross etc.

His final ball wasn't good last night, but all other aspects of his performance were brilliant at times.

Really benefitted from having Fabio outside him, I'm not sure there is often a need, only if you are playing a very strong aerial team to have O'Shea behind him, because he offers so much defensive cover with his energy if the RB gets caught above him.

I don't understand why some people get so angry when Valencia's one-footedness is mentioned. He's obviously still a great footballer but as it's one of the only points about him that stands out as being a tad negative then obviously people are going to mention it. That's how it is with all our players.

but it's like having heather mills out on the right and it's not enough that everything else he does is killer sweet cool and junk.

Giggs is not as one footed, I've already post vids of great goals he has scored with his weaker foot.. one against Juve in the CL and another against the Hammers, so good it was used to advertise the up and coming Sky HD. He was unlucky not to score yesterday with the right footed effort, just shanked it.. but clearly he's capable of putting them sort of chances away.

Evra is a full back, so it doesn't matter if he is one footed, it has little impact on our attacking play. Being a two footed full back isn't really a necessity, neither is being a two-footed winger but having the ability to strike with either foot is a massive advantage to have for an attacking player and can leave the opposition second guessing as we've seen Nani exploit in a huge way.

That was a very rare occasion and if that post illustrates anything, its how much of an advantage it'd be for Valencia to have a decent left foot, it created a goal... imagine if he used it abit more often, he might score more and assist more than he already does.

No ones hating on him for being one-footed, its more of a frustration thing because with the natural ability he possesses, he could be even more influential than he already is. Has it in him to be a regular matchwinner, to win games on his own.. rather than just be the provider most of the time.
With that much pace and power, he'd be unstoppable if he could add the surprise element of cutting inside and hitting a left foot finish or pass.

Despite being so one footed he causes havoc when he cuts inside, the opponents got no idea whether he will keep running forward, break inside the box on his own or slide the ball to a teammate. It goes against the usual run of play and that's why it's so effective. When Nani cuts inside he goes for a shot 9 out of 10 times making it much easier to defend against.
