Arturo Vidal

Why does everyone keep insisting that we'll play 5 at the back just because van Gaal was forced to do it with the Dutch a couple of times? It's completely inappropriate for our players. Our fullbacks are both excellent attacking fullbacks, not wingbacks. They thrive on defending and are good going forwards, but neither could be wingers, which is essentially what you want from a wingback. Shaw, in particular, is superb defensively but still developing his attacking game.

Personally, I think Vidal and Herrera would do fine as a midfield two. But if you don't agree, then just put Carrick behind them. That would work far better than just throwing an extra CB in and hoping that makes us more defensively solid. Having three CBs won't give Herrera and Vidal license to go forwards - that would leave a massive gap between the midfield and the back line, which would be disastrous. You're essentially hoping that one of the CBs moves into the space and plays as a DM, in which case you might as well just play Carrick and not bother with pushing everyone out of position.

Shaw has a great attacking game and Rafa has flaws in his defence due to his insistence on getting forward. they'd both do a great job as wing backs. Plus it fits our key players in the right spots (Carrick won't be a key player this season), not one player is out of position and we have the extra man in defence to stop us getting over run while Shaw and Rafa give us the width missing from us playing without actual wingers. LVG likes his ball playing defenders anyway so you would imagine having one moving up to link with the midfield anyway before tracking back. the extra man would help here also. Four or five and the back would make no odds anyway with RVP, Rooney, Mata, Vidal and herrera ahead of them. Like we'd miss the extra man with that array talent

After getting Herrera and Shaw so quickly and without any drama it really would be a shame for us to start messing about now and potentially losing out over a few mill that we can clearly afford. You can't announce a huge deal like that and then expect clubs to lower their transfer demands for us.

With the announcement of the silly money Adidas deal we would just look like absolute idiots to miss out on one of the best CMs around, after he has just had a good World Cup and we spent not much less on Fellaini....let that sink in a bit and it makes the whole thing even more baffling.

If this drags on then a club like City, Bayern or Chelsea will simply come in and pay what Juve want, it's not even an unreasonable amount FFS, sort it out Woody! If van Gaal has someone else in mind like Schweinsteiger or Strootman when he's fit then it makes it a bit more understandable but the fact he said before the Netherlands Chile game that he liked Vidal and always wanted to sign him makes this whole thing even more ridiculous.

The problem is we don't even know what is going on, he could be on the verge of moving or it all could be BS made up by the media, i think the latter is more likely. All this talk of his knee and fee is only coming from the media, we are making up scenarios based on that information. We just have to wait and see, with the world cup over the only way newspapers can fill their back pages are with transfer rumours.

I find it hard to believe that a story comes out that we won't pay 34 million for Vidal, the player that most United fans want to sign the most, the same day that we announce a 750 million deal with adidas. Surely the club know that this will anger the fans?

Either its bullshit or the 34 million quoted is no where near what Juve are looking for.

Vidal is no Shaw or Herrera. He's a proven world class player whose playing at a top club. These deals are often complicated and difficult to be done.

I hope we've got a plan B and C. We simply need a quality DM

The thing is it isn't all pissing in the wind. Vidal has admitted in Chilean TV he is interested in the premier league, and joining "1 of the biggest clubs in the world". There is certainly more in this than just paper rumours.

Im inclined to agree with this. The 5 at the back thing was an interesting idea and and you can see why it came up given Holland played it and it seems on the surface to resolve the issues we have around Mata, Rooney and RVP. But I very much doubt we are going to go this route. It feels like a way to duck a decision but I think Van Gaal will be strong enough to drop someone so we can keep a better shape.

No chance for us to baulk at the price being quoted. After that Nigerian rapper's admission this feels a lot like Thiago. Muppets if you feel heartbroken, you have only yourself to blame.

I thought they said deal is off.
What a bunch of clowns.

Not worth bothering with any of them. Mail, Express, Mirror, Star you name it. A shower of cnuts the lot of them. We know who we can listen to when it comes to journos and they're all in the dark which is as it should be.

It's the calm before the storm lads

The Nigerian rapper thing is a hoax, isn't it?

Which is fair enough, but my point is I'm not getting my hopes up mainly because of that reason that we do not know what is going on. There is no point wasting time speculating. I would have thought last summer taught us that.

This thread is already the 9th biggest in this forum and we haven't even reportedly made a bid yet. Potential to beat Sneijder/Berbatov here in terms of biggest threads in the transfer forum.

Oh yeah for sure, Unfortunately because UTD sell papers they are happy to report any small little info which probably means nothing. Most transfers don't even get reported until nearly complete.

I think until Vidal returns from Holiday we won't get any further with this.

I bet it has something to do with Woody's Shaw and Herrera double swoop. It's given the muppets overwhelming hope.

If anything this transfer to me feels like the Van Persie one. Too many rumblings of the club and player being interested in making the move happen while the selling club denies it before it finally happens for a surprisingly reasonable fee.

Exactly... I think Vidal is nailed on to come here.
IMO the fee is more like £37m + Nani, which makes more sense for a player of Vidals calibre.

Dear christ, man, are you feeling alright? That's a pain I don't want to know.

 I'll battle on. Although seeing how fast this thread moves I'm just going to stick to reading the most recent page I think.

Is this stuck in the mud because he's on holiday? Pah. Tony V cut his holiday short to sign on the dotted line for United.

Arturo could learn a thing or two from our Antonio. Hopefully not anything football-related though.

What does he say? I don't have access to audio atm.

Talks about going on the pre-season tour to USA.
United have money and want to sign players - especially those who want to sign for the club.
United don't want to enter an auction for Vidal - only want him if he wants to really play for the badge.
United want to have reasonable negotiations (some are ongoing) but won't overpay for players out of desperation.
Some players will leave - esp Anderson and Bebe.

Nobody knows whats going on, it's back to the fergie media control days, wait for a legit source to announce something. Thats all you can do.

Other highlights:

  • We have money to spend
  • We want to appear cool as part of our bargaining strategy
  • Van Gaal wants a 20 man squad, players will leave
  • Its a shame we cant sign Cantona
20 first team players and 3-5 academy players seems about right. A proper summer clearout. A lot of squad players will be moving on in that case.
