Tell that to Stanley Matthews, Denis Law, Kevin Keegan (1978) and Platini (1983) when they won their Ballon d'Or...

I do agree that trophies should be held into account, but more in the sense of the player's impact in achieving it than just the mere fact of having achieved it.

Like I said, they should be taken into account. No one would blame RVP for not winning any trophies with Arsenal, it can be said he did all he could for the team. There are some players on the rumored list whose contributions led to their team missing out on trophies. That should count against them.

I think as well these list are very often a "Who are the best XI in the world" rather than "Which XI players played the best in 2012". I'm not even really sure which the awards actually purports to be seen as it's always the former in practice.

Hearing rumours that this is the Fifa XI of the Year: Casillas, Alves, Marcelo, Piqué, Ramos, Alonso , Xavi, Iniesta, Falcao, Messi, Ronaldo

Quite possibly that's fake, Fifa will lose all credibility if it contains only players from La liga. I am sure they won't let that happen. You never know, although i wouldn't blame the list anyway - other than 2 players maybe.

Why not just have two? And clearly define the parameters? Unless that would make one less than the other if that makes sense... I confuse myself.

1 for Best XI
1 for Top Player in that position

That would be quite interesting for me, the team one would bring up a few players that don't necessarily stand out but do a brilliant job... people mentioning Pirlo as the obvious one, he for me, would be in the best XI team, but not the best XI Individuals

That's too bloated really imo.

I think Pirlo should be on both lists anyway, an absolute world class player for a good 10 years now.

I voted Messi in this poll some time ago, but should Iniesta win the Ballon D'Or, then I don't think anyone can begrudge him. He has had an astounding year with the Spanish national team and Barcelona. He has got better as the year has gone on and some of his byline play in the opposition half has been exceptional. As for Coach of the year, I think it should go to Del Bosque. He had an excellent record for Real Madrid and even if I am not a fan of theirs, he was easily their best manager, doing so well to manage so many World class players. Winning the World Cup 2 years ago and then winning the European Championship with Spain just goes to show he is capable of winning not only at club level, but at International level. A brilliant coach.

By the end of Messi's career there's going to be a long list of brilliant players who've never won a Ballon D'Or.

He has not had an astounding first half of the year with Barcelona, a year where they lost their La Liga and Champions League titles, and everyone bar Messi underperformed in that team. He was great in the Euros, but not the best player of the tournament, IMO (that was Pirlo). He's one of the reasons why Barcelona have come out of the traps this season hungry and determined, but I don't think he's the next in line after Messi. He shouldn't even be in the top 3.

I don't think any club managers stood out this year, so Del Bosque is a good shout.

The usual suspects I guess.

This is why I pointed out that he has gradually got better as the year has gone on.

As for Del Bosque, he has been a class above the rest.

You pick out 3.

Again, same old La Liga biased inclusions. You know you've been head and shoulders above anyone else in the world when you win the award while playing for a non Spanish/Italian team.

It was laughable at times in the past, now it's just boring.

Obviously, the main award for Messi's a formality and rightly so.

I hope Messi's getting paid to wear that.

The real question is who will come second? My money is on Ronaldo.

Bloody hell, it's The Be Sharps.

Cal? mental breakdown countdown.

Is SAF at this ceremony? I have not seen a camera shot of him.

only messi can get away with that jacket in that crowd. you have to be a genius to pull that off.

messi looks like a boss in that. brilliant sartorial choice.

I can't believe he went polka dot - had to be an Alves influence. Think it looks terrible :nono:

This northern bird presenting along with Guillit looks like she'd be a top shag

It's the best league in the world, including two of the best sides in the world, home of all but one or two current European and World Champions.

To be fair none of Chelsea's players stood out in their CL win enough to warrant an inclusion. As for Bayern players they won nothing in the end last season and most of them had a disappointing Euro, knocking Real out wasn't enough. Same goes for City, won the league but were very disappointing otherwise.

There should be at least one Italian player in it though, Pirlo. I'd say 2-3 wouldn't be controversial either with the kind of tournament they had and a good Juventus season home wise.

These events are always shite, even the Champions League draws and such, they make an exciting event boring as feck.
