Bayern München v Manchester United

Actually looking forward to this. It's going to be some night. I may bump into some of you guys over there. One of the best cities in europe and a truly wonderful stadium.

Have to say this latest injury news is good news for us, as long as both Rooney and evra make it. Will force moyes into picking a good lineup.
Don't see any other option then(which is how we should start regardless of injuries IMO):

De gea
Jones Ferdinand Vidic evra
Carrick fletcher
Valencia kagawa welbeck
Rooney
Looks good to me although I think i'd keep Buttner at LB. His pace was so important last week.

I'd probably prefer Mandzukic to be starting over a false nine, I trust Ferdinand and Vidic to defend a straightforward striker.
Before the first leg I would have agreed. Now I think Müller's positioning allowed the backside center-half the freedom to read and bail out the other. Mandzukic plays higher and would fix the backside center-half.

As long as the DMs don't allow too much space behind them, Vidic and Ferdinand can snuff out a false nine, limiting the threat to wing play when Bayern are in sustained possession.

At least that's what I saw in the first leg.

It's hilarious how Buttner is suddenly a World beater when many were saying how shit he was a few months ago.
He's not a world beater but he kept Robben quiet for most of the game, something that he deserves credit for. Surely it makes sense to keep him at LB as he already knows what it is like to be up against Robben? Evra hasn't played vs Robben in quite a while and is known for his issues at LB, so why pick him? Is it only for experience, because that didn't exactly affect Buttner last time!

Nooooooooooo! With moyes in charge you can never be sure.
Actually just saw the training pics on facebook, he was there looking normal, all he had was a little bandage around his thumb. Don't think that injury will keep him out at all. Let's just hope he doesn't start on wednesday...

De Gea

Jones --- Ferdinand --- Vidic --- Buttner

Carrick --- Fellaini

Valencia ---Kagawa --- Welbeck

Rooney
Pretty much same line-up as first leg but Kagawa replacing Giggs from the start. I've heard some suggestions for putting Smalling and Jones for Fellaini, so he can do a number on Kroos/Gotze but I feel Jones did a good job against Ribery so I would stick with that and just Fellaini use his presence to break up the Bayern play in midfield to start with and see how we get on in the first 20 minutes or so. If it doesn't work out, Moyes can certainly change it.

We can't afford to play the same way as last week. That's what I think. Pep was surprised then and Bayern didn't have an answer to our tactic but they will this time. Moyes needs to change something, to surprise them again. That's our only chance imo. I'm not worried though, as I believe in the genius of the Chosen one.

We can't play the same as last week, injuries don't allow for it. Fellaini has to be replaced (with Fletcher imo) and i'd start Kagawa instead of Giggs.

I wasn't talking about the team but rather the style. We can't afford to sit back with 10 men and rely on long balls and Welbeck's pace. It worked last week but they won't be surprised this time. I think we should press. Hard. Be physical, disturb their pattern of play, rough them up a little, snap at them when they have possession and force them to play at a brisk tempo, which is out of their comfort zone. Make them uncomfortable.

Im guessing they are going to line up something like this:

Neuer

Rafinha-----Boateng-----Dante-----Alaba

Lahm-----Kroos

Robben-----Götze-----Ribery

Manduzic

Replacing Fellaini with a scarecrow would be more beneficial seeing his performance in the first leg. Even if he was fit I would not start him since he seems like a walking red card to me in Europe.

I read that apparently they are going to attack us after our set pieces. That means when we concentrate on corners and free-kicks moving a lot of bodies forward, they will counter once they get the ball and Rio/Vidic won't get back in time! Nothing innovative, but makes sense still.

Pep also mentioned focussing on hitting us with speed, something that could be dangerous if we are caught out with Rio and Vidic holding a high line. We need to be compact, defend as a unit and attack with a lot of pace.

Thanks mate, but I doubt it. I'm pretty shit.

I thought I was the only one to notice this strange occurence. One solid performance against Munich and suddenly he's the Dutch Maldini.

He's not going to have the OT fans cheering him on and Bayern's wingers aren't exactly going to rest on their laurels. Evra needs to start.

It's good that with injuries and suspensions we know the Bayern line up with almost certainty apart from Muller/Manduzic up top although I imagine it will be Manduzic after Muller was very poor at Old Trafford.

Don't see Fletcher starting after playing vs Newcastle and Fellaini might be out so I can see us lining up:

-----------------De Gea-----------------

Jones --- Ferdinand --- Vidic --- Evra

-------------Carrick --- Giggs---------

------Valencia ---Kagawa --- Welbeck

-----------------Rooney----------------

This. United have to dictate something to win the tie. Absolutely agree that it's going to have to be something different than the last leg. Pressing is probably the most viable.

It'll take a unified effort to press without exposing the backline. What troubles me is the team really hasn't done it this season and we all saw how only part of a team pressing is suicide (like Spurs under AVB).

If that is the team I will give you £10,000 and a blowjob.

He knows Valencia starts, so that means he did his job alright.

the best we can hope for is that bayern try mix it up and play differently to how they usually do as they struggled to make the most of all that passing last week. its not easy to change and all of a sudden play with loads of pace. i hope we can capitalise on their injuries also and score first.

Thank god Fellaini is not playing.

Hopefully we'll line up like this :

DDG

Valencia
Smalling
Vidic
Evra

Januzaj/Nani
Carrick
Jones
Kagawa
Welbeck

Rooney

Fellaini not training is the best piece of news ahead of this game. I just don't know if Fletcher will be able to go through a high intensity game after completing 90 mins over the weekend, so there's a very good chance of seeing Jones in midfield and Smalling at right back. Giggs is likely a dead certainty to play this game as are Welbeck & Rooney.

I'm suspecting something like this:

De Gea
Smalling Rio Vidic Evra
Carrick Jones Giggs
Valencia Rooney Welbeck
I'd be very pleasantly surprised if he puts enough confidence in Kagawa and Hernandez for this one but I'm not counting on it.

I can see Pep's trying to use his mind games by saying we'll have 9 men in the box. Now this maybe obvious to most, as that's how we more or less played at Old Trafford, however, by him saying that, I feel he's trying to get Moyes to try and prove him wrong and maybe go with a different approach and push up the pitch, which will play right into Bayern's hands.

I feel we should go with the same tactics we used at Old Trafford and try and pick them off on the counter. Don't let him get inside your head Moyesy. :D

Exactly the same thing I thought. But the problem all lies within how they set up (with their goal advantage and us having to chase a goal). They could play it clever and sit deeper, conceding more possession to us and forcing us to play a more open game and then taking as apart on the counter. I don't think they will play a high line and attack us because it will play right into our hands like in the first leg.
