We will have £100mil in the bank. But much of that will be our cash flow used to pay wages etc.

If we didnt have that, we would be up shit creek.[/QUOTE]

Some believe we're well up there already

It's to do with age. What 18 year olds can you name who've got permits on the special talent rule, because I can't think of any. Vela was man of the tournament at the u-17 world cup but still had to go on loan for two years before getting one.

I think that's exactly what it was.

Can anyone actually name an 18 year old who has received a permit thanks to the special talent rule?

I appreciate that the club sent out mixed messages in the immediate aftermath of the transfer falling through but there is a perfectly reasonable explanation for that. There was obviously a communication breakdown between the management team and United's website/press guys. I think it was Ben Hibbs who broke the story on United's website. It seems entirely possible that he simply made a mistake by not mentioning the work permit issue or more likely he wasn't informed about the permit problems and therefore stated that the transfer had fallen through and that United were comfortable with that because of the emerging talents already at the club. As we know Mike Phelan then clarrified what had happened the next day I think (next press conference anyway).

We've seen with the signing of Bebe when he was wrongly described as a striker on the club's website, before Fergie stated that he was a wide/central attacking midfielder the next day, that these communication problems do happen.

The bond theory just doesn't stack up for me. There was no cashflow problem at the time and we subsequently paid more money for Smalling before the bond issuance had been completed. I'm sure it was simply work permit problems with the crucial factor against Ljajic being his young age.

Not really 18, but Anderson did receive the work permit just after playing 37 competitive matches, he just turned 19 at that time. Mikel also is another case who received a work permit after just turning 19. Both got it due to the "Special Talent Rule"

Yeah, presumably we delayed bringing him to the club in the first place because we were concerned about his chances of getting a work permit at the age of 17. Do we know if the rule has been tightened up in the last few years?

He couldnt play outside Serbia until he was 18

Mikel was already a full international and played at the ANC.

I'm starting to have my doubts about him, after he's not scored a hat-trick in the first 5 minutes of the under21 game - I may voice my concerns to Daniel Taylor

At the base of all these rumours lies the fact that Sir Alex decided to tell the media he hadn't seen him play when it would've been judicious to prevaricate.

Eggsackerley.

The media is slating Sir Alex for taking a gamble on a player he hadn't seen, but at the same time they're making a judgment on a player they haven't seen.

Oh the irony.

So how was Bebe today?

From what I read in the match thread, he looked quite good going forward, won a lot of corners hit the bar but isn't that fit yet. The stamina training and that he's doing at the moment is much needed.

Anyone care to expand please?

Hold The feck On! Has nobody seen this?

Portugal U21 0 England U21 1: Manchester United's Bebe flops as Chelsea's Daniel Sturridge strikes | Mail Online
England Under 21s kept their hopes of qualifying for next summer's European Championships alive with a hard-fought victory over Portugal in Barcelos.

Defeat by Group 9 leaders Greece in their last match in March had left Stuart Pearce's side five points adrift but they closed the gap thanks to Daniel Sturridge's 35th-minute goal.

Victory for England in their final qualifying match against Lithuania on Tuesday should now be enough to send them through to the play-offs ahead of the finals in Denmark.

Pearce chose not to start with Arsenal youngster Jack Wilshere, who made his senior England debut last month, while £7million Manchester United signing Bebe picked up his first Under 21 cap for Portugal.

David Simao had the first effort on goal eight minutes in but it was from a long way out and flew well over the bar. England striker Danny Welbeck then produced a clever flick to break into the box but Daniel Carrico was there to clear the danger.

The cagey opening to a game both sides needed to win was summed up 24 minutes in when England goalkeeper Frank Fielding was booked for time-wasting.

The visitors should have opened the scoring when Welbeck tapped in Kyle Walker's cross but the flag was incorrectly raised for offside.

However, England only had to wait seven minutes to put that behind them as Tom Cleverley played in Sturridge and the Chelsea man chipped goalkeeper Rui Patricio.

The same pair then combined again but this time Cleverley shot high and wide as England had to settle for a one-goal lead at half-time.

England continued to press after the break and Tottenham's Danny Rose had a close-range effort well blocked by Carrico.

Bebe had been largely disappointing but he tested Fielding for the first time with a shot in the 65th minute that the Blackburn man beat away.

The home side were cranking up the pressure and Fielding was called on again to save from Andre Pinto as the clock ticked down.

There was still time for Welbeck and substitute Nathan Delfouneso to both miss presentable chances but the win was all that mattered for Pearce and England.

Flopped? feck me I hate the Daily Mail

Hopeless as a lone striker, but once he moved out wide in the 2nd half, looked a player. An huge turbo on him, with no lag whatsoever, very very quick. Showed a couple of nice touches too.

Fitness is/was an issue, but Fergie told us that, he still lasted the 90 minutes. He is a long term project in my book, but I am no longer afraid that we got some random bum off the streets.

Maybe you're making things sound a bit better then they actually were as his good play was only in the second half. In the first half he seemed to be being played as a striker and hardly touched the ball.

Promising enough overall though.

I didn't see the game so I was just going on what I read when I went in the match thread briefly. Thanks for letting us know though.

After they ran that earlier story of him which was discredited by SAF they have to keep pressing the issue to make it seem like they are in the know and that SAF is only putting on a front.

2 days after they praised him for scoring a hattrick in training.

If you troll the pages on newsnow some "proper Norwegian football scout" assessed his game. Said he looked confident on the ball at times but poor first touch and unfit. Extremely talented at times but it is still raw, good usage of both feet, seemed better and more effective in second half when he played on right wing. But tactical awareness needs worked on. He then went on to say, it should be noted, the Portugal team were extremely poor so it would have a bad reflection on him.

The press are dying for the kid to fail just because they smell blood after Fergie's comments about not seeing him before signing him.

If he does flop then they have their stick to beat SAF with. I have sympathy with them as it's been too long since the Djemba twins and Kleberson debacle so they need to take their ABU frustrations out on someone

Making it all the more stupid he said anything about it in the first place. It's sobering that a man of Ferguson's knowledge and experience is still prone to making extremely unhelpful lapses!

Fergie should have never made those comments, and united should have never disclosed the fee for the transfer. We painted a bullseye on the back of the young lads back and everyone who holds a grudge against the club or manager will look at Bebe as the soft target.

Fergie's a legend, but he played this whole transfer thing wrong from the very start and as a result there's way more pressure on the lad then there had to be.

Um we haven't disclosed the fee. The transfer fee is to this day undisclosed. The 7.4m is from the release clause that was in his contract but, no where has it been said we paid the amount for the release.

As for Fergie's comment on not seeing him - I'll say it again - it means nothing. Just like with everything Bebe so far from the journos - they'd have found something or make up something in order to take a swipe at us.

Had Fergie not said anything - easy enough to have them say Fergie is getting old and signing crap players and doesn't know what he is doing anymore. Then people here will be "Fergie should come out and say why we signed him - i'ts a mistake for him to keep quiet.

It really matters little what SAF says or doesn't say - they'll find something negative to pick on.

I'm sure Gill was quoted as saying we paid 9m euros. It was a TV piece at the airport on his return I think.

I was talking to a guy from Portugal the other week and he told me we may have the next Ronaldo on our books. Of course i dont get too excited by these type of comments but it seams that Bebe is much more suited to RA or LA than an out and out striker role so maybe there is something in it. He said he had seen him play for a time so i think he may have a point.
SAF will for sure never make the same mistake again to heap that much pressure on a guy from Portugal as on Nani. The only reason imo he didnt realise his potential much earlier were the comparissons with Cristiano.
Bebe will need time but i am confident he will make it at Old Trafford. Maybe he will be even a star player we will always remember.

Having been following English and Italian football for years I've came across some of the nastiest journalists around. On the other hand I have never seen any journalists yearning for a 20 yr old to fail in the way some journalists are doing at the moment. Its disgusting.

Sir Alex Ferguson must wait for Bebe to blossom after indifferent showing for Portugal Under-21s

Sir Alex Ferguson sent a local scout to the Estadio Cidade de Barcelos to watch his new striker Bebe make his debut as Portugal’s Under-21 lost 1-0 at home to England on Friday night.

The Manchester United boss did not see the 20-year-old play before paying £7.4million for his services this summer and, on this evidence, Ferguson will be waiting a while before he sees Bebe blossom. The forward is far from a complete
player, but the signs are encouraging.
United we stand: Bebe was up against his Manchester United team-mate Chris Smalling in Portugal

Furthermore, Ferguson will be patient and Bebe will have time to develop and improve at United.

Shorn of the dreadlocks he once sported, he started energetically and looked lean as he set about chasing the frequent long balls that came his way. Support was often slow in coming, but he showed an impressive burst of pace.
Indifferent: Bebe certainly has the work ethic, but his touch often let him down

If Chris Smalling has not become familiar with his new club-mate after the Portuguese player’s first weeks at United, he soon was here. The pair often went head-to-head as Bebe operated through the middle on the shoulder of the last man.

The kid schooled on the streets of Lisbon was certainly not afraid to put himself about. Yet Smalling won almost all of the aerial battles and Bebe blocked team-mate Castro’s shot by mistake.

Bebe’s first touch was not that of the magician his youth coaches claim to have seen.

The ball once ran straight under his foot as he went to trap it and another attempt to control ballooned high in the air. Nerves or excitement also led to a couple of stray passes.

Ferguson’s scout will have much to ponder after watching Bebe step on to the biggest stage of his career. There is surely much more to come.

I've been reading that he's fast but based on this game how did his touch look? Does he look gifted on the ball in terms of ball control and dribbling?

His club said that 4 clubs had met his release fee (one being Real Madrid) and Bebe had chosen to come to United. That may not be true, but it seems fairly widely accepted that it was £7.4m and United haven't made any efforts to deny this, which might have taken some pressure of Bebe.

Really hard to tell. Watching on a terrible stream and Bebe had a quiet match. First half, he was poor. The ball rolled under his feet at one point. Second half he was more involved but it was still hard to judge. He seemed to like knocking the ball forward and running rather than running with the ball.

How knee-jerk is the football world? Since Bebe signed:

- He's the next Ronaldo;

- He's a flop (due to non-inclusion in Reserve team);

- He's alright, let's give him time (after Ferguson said that we have to be patient and that journos are spackers);

- He's a flop (because he was average in an average game, in a team, which by all accounts, was piss poor);

- Next week: He's going to win the Ballon d'Or.
