Berbatov | Fulham player

There is absolutely no sense in not taking up the option. None. It will happen.

If we want to keep him, taking up the option keeps him here for an extra 12 months.

If we want to sell him, taking up the option increases the transfer fee we can demand.

It's quite simple, really.

There's only one possible snag with that. As SAF said, the option would only kick in March. Not sure of the particulars of the clause and option but what if he agrees a Bosman before we get to exercise our option? Get what I'm saying? Just exploring all the possibilities and making sure we not jumping the gun here as none of us know the exact particulars of this clause/option

SAF said the extension 'kicks in' in March, it will probably be automatic unless something is done to stop it. Kind of like those 'free for 30 days' trials that just become a subscription unless you phone up to stop it.

It's not. Using the option means we committ to paying his (high) wages for another year. We might want to sell him after that, but if he decides not to go - Surely there are very few clubs that will match those wages - we'll be 'stuck' with him. If we really want rid and clearing those wages could be important in chasing other targets, extending the deal is a risk.

Listen you feckers:

The clause means this:

United tell buying club they want 8m or so as this is their valuation, anything below that and United no longer feel the deal is in the best interests of the club and therefore they would prefer to keep a top player rather than sell him for peanuts. Simples.

Of course it would have meaning, if Munich or Leverkusen want Berba and SAF is fine with keeping him then it obviously strenghtens our hand. Without that option Leverkusen or Bayern could either sign him on a pre-contract now for FREE or for a nominal fee, the option stops that.

Fergie doesn't do 'fine with keeping him'. He either wants to keep him, in which case we won't be entering any negotiations for his sale, or he doesn't. If we are negotiating with anyone - which I doubt - then it's obvious we want to sell. And right now, we'd be selling a player who is close to the end of his contract.

As for a pre contract, I doubt the option stops Berbatov from signing one. It does means that if we do take up the option, that pre contract will be meaningless. Isn't the whole Bosman thing about liberating players? I doubt a clause like this, that actually promises him nothing for next season until we exercise it, would block him like that.

And that club says: Fine, if you're so happy to keep him, sign him for another season and pay him those wages. Why were you talking to us in the first place?

To make a long story short, it's this: Whatever Fergie said is meaningless. Berbatov's contract has 5 months to go until we LEGALLY use our option.

How did you come to that conclusion?

As I said before, the option may well have been exercised already. Why wouldn't it be? Are you expecting to see a copy of his contract before you are willing to believe this?

Fergie stated we need a strong squad to compete at the business end of the season, selling berbatov is definately not helping our cause.

Honda wouldn't be solving your midfield problems any time soon.

Nice technique and a cracking set piece taker but he's overrated.

Honda is only played up top for Country, for club he plays in a central midfield role. He'd be ace.

Great long range shot, good passing, great free kicks, and is capable of playing in a physical league.

But he's just coming off a very long injury so he won't be going anywhere fast. He needs to reprove himself before he's leaving Russia.

Meaningless. He clearly wants to operate with a weak squad.

I reckon he's not buying midfielders to give himself a challenge. Next season he'll play without a goalkeeper and the one after that he'll start Diouf in every game.

That'll be the season he finally goes.

My point is, that it's not what Fergie says that is important but what the club does to back it. If he said we'll do it and we haven't yet, then it's the 'haven't' part that matters.

Berbatov won't be sold this transfer window, you can be perfectly sure about that.

I wonder if we ever got the best out of Berbs. I always felt he played better under Spurs.

There is no question we did not

And there is no question that probably everyone thought he would have been a far better player for us.

Some interesting comments from Ancelotti:

Carlo Ancelotti claims PSG have been offered the chance to buy Fernando Torres from Chelsea.

The Spanish striker has been a huge disappointment for Chelsea since joining the club in a £50million British transfer record deal from Liverpool in January 2011.

Now former Blues boss Ancelotti has revealed Torres is being touted around Europe by agents, along with Manchester United’s Dimitar Berbatov and Tottenham's Roman Pavlyuchenko.

The PSG boss told Gazzetta dello Sport. "There is a lot of choice for this January market. Do you want the names?

"OK, now I tell you the players the agents are offering on the market, officially or not: Carlos Tevez, Fernando Torres, Dimitar Berbatov, Roman Pavlyuchenko, Edinson Cavani, Fernando Llorente."

Whether this is genuine it stands to be seen, but this could be a sign that Berba is set to leave this month! :(

Agents are constantly offering clubs players that they don't even represent.
