Berbatov | Fulham player

I've stopped addressing RF in here now, he's become a complete joke in this thead.

Not really. I have said all along that he doesn’t really fit into our side. In that respect I have been proven correct. It would certainly appear it is what Fergie thinks.

I have said all along that for most of his stint he has been below what I expected when we signed him. I don’t that can be massively argued with either.

What we are left with though is an embarrassment of riches, in having a name as big as Berbatov as effectively our 4th choice striker.

I was wrong when I believed he would leave last summer. But surely you must have had doubts over his future also?

So far Steve, this is my point, you are basing your assessment of his capabilities on his performances within a much slower system.

You have yet to see how he would perform in Rooney's current position within the current set up. The very criticism you cite of what he has provided for Utd so far, i am arguing is because of that slower system not suiting his strengths.

It is not simple a question of looking at what he has produced for us so far, the question shopuld be why has he not produced more? What has prevented him from being, at the very least, the player he was at Spurs?

Imo the system and personnel makes all the difference, look at Rooney's respective contributions first against Bulgaria and then against Wales. The contrast in performance with a player who we knew was in form, was quite staggering. The reason: The first game played a certain system that suited the players within it, and we saw the result. Whilst for the Wales game, we played a similar system only this time with players not suited to that system, and the contributions were negatively affected as a result.

Good points all, mate.

I think that having Berbatov in the squad is excellent, he has an excellent attitude and has a fantastic football brain. He understands the need to rotate the squad and when given the opportunity to play from the start he must score goals.

I expect him to start tonight and score a goal or two.

There's doubts, and then there's stuff like this:

Im in a shit mood now and I have defended him thus far tonight. But yeah he can go be fecked.

Although I had predicted he would be gone this summer quite a few months ago. He has never been a true Utd player and I dont think he ever will be.

As I said I am delighted his 1st half of this season has justified his being with us.

He can do one now for all I care

But no, I didn't really concern myself that he would be sold each week.

It has nothing to do with your predictions or expectations, something you keep failing to grasp, but your embarrassing posts in this thread pretty much each game he does or doesn't play. You are probably worse than Johnno in that aspect.

My embarrassing comments usually coincide with me being drunk. I just checked that post, it was the night of the CL final.

I was in a bit of a state at that stage. I am actually impressed that I managed to be slightly articulate.

Go me

So you're having a go at him after a game in which he didn't actually play?

Go you indeed.

Let Berba have an extended run in the team. It takes time to find form. Rooney will be rested but it does seem to me SAF has decided on it being Rooney plus one and currently the other striker is either Chicha or Welbeck.

I don't think we will be going back to Rooney and Berbatov for any extended period. It seems unfortunately for berba for him to succeed others must be injured or off form.

There's no chance Berba will have an extended run in the team - unless its the CC team you're talking about or the odd EPL one. We've moved on. The way the team is playing its all about pace, with a front striker who scores regularly (Chica or Welbeck) and Rooney in his best and most effective position just behind there really is no room for Berba except off the bench when tactics need changing.

berba will get a run in the CC, and early stages of the FA Cup. he wont get an extended run in the league and champions league. just not going to happen, why would drop the Rooney - Hernandez partnership that works so well?

Julian, we have moved on to a system that now suits Berba. You are damning him for his performances within the slower paced systems of the past 2 years.

I am advocating he has been kept specifically as cover for Rooney's position. You can specualte he cannot play in this new system, but how can you be so sure when we have never played him in such a system before?

Im on a roll today moaning about Berbs and Owen.

Owen made me look like a fool but Berbs did not take his chance today IMO. In fact I thought he looked quite poor apart from a couple of nice touches.

Lack of football? Who knows. Now I am unsure if he will start at Stoke. Probably not but I do hope he gets another chance against Basle and Norwich

That is all I will say but I felt it only right I should conclude my earlier rant(s)

Not his best game, needs to regain match fitness. He's not an impact player so he needs starts.

Yep that's the problem. He needs a run of games, which he's not going to get. He's not like Owen who's able to keep himself sharp even when he barely gets a game.

Earlier on in the game his 1st touch was letting him down a bit but as the game progressed he was coming more & more into it passing it around & playing through balls etc, one lovely through ball to Valencia in the 74th minute in particular. Not a bad performance at all overall for a lad that hasn't had much game time recently.

I think were a bit hard on him. He hardly played in any of our early games and then his first start is with 3 other strikers around him and then he gets moved to centre back. Hardly a confidence booster.

Its desire. Watching Berba today he looked a bit disinterested. I think he played well within himself.

I think what he actually needs is a start in a big game which would be a vote of confidence.

Thought he was very good today. Demanding the ball, coming back for it, spreading it around, etc. I could see him falling back into midfield for games where we want to take our foot off the pedal. Not particularly enterprising mind (which one does tend to look for in a forward), BUT there isn't a player on the squad better at retaining the ball. Always amazing cool while getting hacked at and gets the clever or at least safe pass in under duress. We really could have used him vs. Barca.

The number of touches he got today was up there. Honestly I see a bit of a disconnect between the play of Berbatov and Hernandez, and how they're perceived by folks here.

I'm not even a Berbafan either. Always preferred Tevez back when we used to argue about such things.

Not too shabby a center back while we're at it.

Had the key pass that set up Owen's goal and for the first 15 looked like he wanted to stroke the ball about and take control of the game, never really did and after the third he took his foot off the gas as most did...but I thought he was looking pretty well, myself.

He seemed to enjoy his little stint there at the back  At what point trying to play a 1-2 with Owen who took a poor touch, the Berb just smiled.

A Carrick - Berbatov CB pairing. Who would've predicted, ey!

One thing we tend to overlook is that midfielder-Berba is actually only annoying when he, Rooney, and Park are all trying to play the same role at the same time and you inevitably end up yelling at the screen for someone to get bloody forward for the love of (God) Phil Jones.

It's fine when he's playing with an Owen, or another poacher type. His penchant for Berbdignation aside, he's a really great team-player. Berba drops back and the wings push forward. His skillset makes him a really good advanced playmaker/false 9/trequartista/whatever-we're-calling-it-these-days.

In post match interview Owen said berbatov fancies himself as a center back and sometimes plays there In training so he wasn't surprised. How much was tongue In cheek I dunno but he seemed straight up.

Rio tweeted the same thing. Interesting!

in training footballers can play anywhere. bet sir bobby could play alongside his brother jack
at centre half or even mauirice. berba is ok - bet he and mickey are teaching danny how to play
