Berbatov | Fulham player

SAF hasn't done that. I think irrespective of what happens the season before SAF gives everyone a fair chance to excel if you don't take it then you can only blame yourself.

Not really. Welbeck has started games for us even when berba's been fit. talking about the CS and the first few games of the season. Berba did himself no favors in the leeds game and the stoke game yday but thats after he's already been dropped in favor of welbeck.

the part that struck me.

Welbeck is definitely 3rd choice now. Only SAF could make the premier league golden boot winner 4th choice.

Nah, a few of us said it would happen this season in the Welbeck threads and 'is Berbatov now 4th choice?' thread.

Are you saying Berbatov has been treated unfairly?

Yeah, i remember that. There was a lot of speculation but i dont think too many expected welbeck to start straightaway.

Not at all. thats something i like about SAF. never hesitates to make the tough call. welbeck is better suited to the high tempo style that we play and so play he does. nothing unfair about it at all. i do wish berba would take the chances that he gets and atleast challenges the 3 though.

I think he has been treated unfairly. he‘s been SAF‘s preffered option regardless of form, performance etc until this season. Now, he is treated as he deserves.

huh? who'd you have played with rooney last season?

At the start of last season, clearly we should have been playing Macheda or Owen over Berbatov to play with Rooney or maybe even Hernandez.

i dont get this. at the start of the last season, berba was in very good nick. why do you think we shouldnt have played him?

Because Rooney plays better with a striker who makes runs in behind. 2 second strikers as a pairing rarely works, which is why more often than not their partnership has looked a little Gerrard/Lampard for my liking.

Berba also plays better with a striker like Hernandez, this is why i have been saying that Berba was kept just for the situation we find ourselves in now, Rooney getting injured.

Our system is reliant on a deep striker, without Berba to call on, we would now have to play 2 very similar strikers as an untried and potentially unbalanced pairing, which again rarely works.

I'm not sure it's quite as cryptic as you make out. We have the likes of Giggs, Young and I'm sure Nani who could/have operated off a main striker.

I'd start Berba with Welbeck tonight and see how they work out as pairing.

Rooney and Hernandez both likely to miss these two home games and the internationals are segmented in between the Liverpool away game.

Real chance for him to make a case for himself as he has to take these opportunities. The Stoke game was his first real chance of the season for me(Leeds game was a very unusual eleven) and he does need games to get some sharpness.

Genuinally looking forward to him having the centre stage with close to the real first eleven playing without Rooney around as it shows how strong the squad actually is.

Good shout, that's what i would do to. It has potential and must be given a chance if we are to have a season that is not dominated by our over dependence on the fitness of Rooney.

Rooney was in shite form though. hardly seemed capable of trapping a football. to expect him do all the creative work and hope he created something for the likes of macheda or owen who werent going to participate much in the build up themselves would have been asking for trouble imo.

A fit and in form rooney should always be accompanied by a hernandez or a owen, but if he isnt firing , its better to have someone who can participate in the build up.

Fair point, although really Rooney should have been dropped, nobody should have a divine right to be in the team when they were playing that poorly.

Again if he isn't firing he should be dropped. Rooney is our best player, but only on form, if he is not as you say firing, then Berba should be in. It didn't happen that way, and this is why we now find ourselves in a position of guesswork regarding what to do when Rooney is out. Not ideal imo, it has cost us before, i hope it will not do so again.

Well, thats part of the perks you get for being the best at the club. benching him wouldnt have helped get his form back anyways tbh, we had to give him game time. thats the only way he was going to work himself back on form.

regarding the replacement bit, when he's not there, berba should play. thats his role now in the squad anyways i feel.

If he plays and scores tonight he'll be criticized because Basel is a shit side.

he is not even playing, on the bench, fergie just don't trust him anymore.

I simply dont understand why we did not just sell him. I am not a Berbatov fan and never have been. But I feel sorry for him. He should be playing 1st team football for someone big in Italy or Germany.

What now this summer. We activate his extra year and he has potentially even less chances next season

I personally believe that we wanted to sell him but Berba said no to moving and now ala Yorkie Fergie is gonna freeze him out so that we can sell him in Jan and get some funds in.

3 years without a goal in the CL, my goodness it must end tonight.

Here's a fun fact for you guys. Rooney didn't score a single goal in the CL from his debut hattrick against Fenerbache, to an away goal at Roma (the one before the 7-1) in a 2-1 loss for us. More than 3 years.

I think Ronaldo had a similar run as well. Not exactly going to bring that up now are we?

He was 20, and we were quite shit in Europe in his first two seasons at United.

And not a single feck was given on that day

We were rubbish in the CL those seasons. I think he scored against Debrecen in a prelim though in between those games.

Ronaldo had a similar poor record to Rooney in those years too

Ronaldo scored his first Champions League goal against that 7-1 v Roma.

But come on... they were youngsters!

Indeed, but it was pointed out quite a lot at the time when the 2 of them were going through that European drought

Honestly, I don't the furor every time Berbatov gets left out. Frankly, he hasn't looked good this season and prior to that he had half a good season in 3. We're winning tonight and I honestly couldn't give two fecks if Berbatov is on the bench
