No, only what I read:

Sir Alex Ferguson cancels his Cristiano Ronaldo peace visit

Sir Alex Ferguson once famously rode pillion on a motorcycle journey across Paris to persuade Eric Cantona not to retire, but it seems that there will be no mercy dash to try to talk some sense into Cristiano Ronaldo. .... Ferguson and Ronaldo have not seen each other since a celebratory party at Old Trafford on May 22, the night after their Champions League triumph over Chelsea in Moscow, and it is understood that there has been little, if any, telephone contact between the men, with their relationship strained by the player’s repeated statement that he wishes to move to Real Madrid.

Ferguson, having initially tried to ignore the furore over Ronaldo, appeared ready to spring into action by flying to Portugal this morning to try to end the unedifying stand-off, but that trip has been cancelled ...

It is not clear whether the two had, directly or otherwise, spoken to discuss a meeting today or whether Ferguson planned simply to arrive on Ronaldo’s doorstep. Ferguson, unsurprisingly, has been incensed by Ronaldo’s behaviour in recent weeks – from the initial flirting with Real to the crass suggestion last week that he felt like a “slave” at United – while the player and his entourage have encouraged the perception, accurate or otherwise, that he has been hurt by his manager’s “rot in the stands” comment five weeks ago and by a lack of direct contact with regard to an ankle operation that could keep him out of action until early October.

He cancelled it because he's going to be in London signing Berbatov.

I really wish people would stop biting on the same old negative comments about Berbatov which have been regurgitated in the numerous threads.

Smart arse. There are many similarities between the Berbatov and Ronaldo issues on here. Primarily regurgitation.

Lol, glad you didn't take it badly, was sitting here after a few drinks, typing out the message thinking 'i'm gonna get shouted at here'

And your spot on with the similarity...sometimes hard to tell if I'm in the Ronnie thread or the Berba thread! (could be the beer) :wenger:

And why the feck should he?

The only problem with this is that Real know we have to sell him now, he has talked his way out of the club, we won't get what we originally thought we would. That was their ploy. I worry that they actually don't have much money, but have now put us in a position where we have to sell. I think that we are talking around the £50 million pound mark, as opposed to the £70 million that was quoted. I stand to be corrected on the matter.

Well we don't have to sell. Additionally if we did, we could just throw in a shit load of clauses.

That's one of the biggest things I'm saying. Maybe I've given the impression I want him to change his game a lot. I don't. I still want him to do a lot of playmaking. Just not quite as much as he does at the moment. Trust in his teammates to do that sometimes and try a bit harder to get into the positions to be on the recieving end. Run at the defence a little more. Nothing major, just fine-tuning.

Agree, ive been saying this repeatedly in this thread but ill say it again, he needs to not always look to be the playmaker and pass rather use his own excellence to dribble around a player, or have a crack at goal from outside the box after creating an angle. He needs to find himself in the right areas and playing off berbtov will allow him to do that and find the spaces in between the midfield and defense that he used to do so well and exploit it.

He needs to be more direct and selfish then he will be ok, im sure after this years learning curve he will be a better finisher for it, but he needs to find that individualistic approach again, because if he can combine the 2 (like you said) he will become the best player in the world. A lot of it is to do with confidence also, and this can be found playing next to berbatov.

Will be a good signing if true, being premiership-proven and all.

But for crying out loud he really needs to change his sleezy, pervy looking hairstyle.

I'm just holding out for some good news after the Summer of discontent.

For those who have doubts about Berbatov just need to watch the Spurs game at Old Trafford last Season - Berbatov has us in all sorts of trouble, and we were very lucky to escape with a narrow victory.

I myself would have preferred signing Benzema, but it seems for a variety of reasons it's not going to happen. Berbatov will do nicely.

Berbatov is a great player; just the sort that is tailored to play at Old Trafford in the biggest matches. I have no doubt he has the temperament to perform at United. He would not feel the pressure. I also don't buy into all the arguments stating he has a questionable personality. He may have a languid style and a disinterested demeanor on the field, but in his two years at Spurs he has not exactly kicked up the sort of fuss that you would expect given the reputation he has acquired.

He isn't the quickest or the hardest worker, but his technical levels are supreme. The man has the ability to be ranked up there with Zola, Cantona and Bergkamp when it comes to gifted forwards that have played in England. He is also not averse to dealing with the ball in the air (for instance, he easily outmuscled Hyypia twice last season at Anfield to assist Keane for two goals).

46 goals in two seasons is also fairly reasonable. He could be a 30 goal man in the United team. Proven goalscorer in the Bundesliga, Premier League and the Champions League. Aged 27 means that he has at least another 4-5 years of top level football in him.

Dimitar Berbatov. What an acquistion that fella would be.

BERBATOV WILL BEG FOR MOVE TO UNITED

Monday July 14,2008
By Matt Law

DIMITAR BERBATOV is to plead with Tottenham to grant him his dream move to Manchester United this week.

Bulgaria striker Berbatov, who is with the Spurs squad at their Spanish training camp, is desperate to complete a switch to Old Trafford after United tabled an opening offer of £20million.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was fully aware his first bid would fail, having seen Manchester City’s £30m approach rejected earlier this year.

But Ferguson is confident he has sent a strong enough signal to Berbatov, 27, for the player to now force Spurs to lower their £35m asking price.

Ferguson is so sure a deal will be agreed that he will fly with United to their tour of Africa on Wednesday and allow chief executive David Gill to tie up the loose ends.

“I can tell with certainty that Manchester United have expressed an interest in Berbatov. I cannot comment on the issue further,” said Berbatov’s agent, Emil Dantchev.

United’s bid has thrown Tottenham’s transfer strategy over Berbatov into the air. They would prefer to sell him abroad and were confident of pricing United out of the market.

When City came calling, Spurs could turn them away in the knowledge Berbatov was not interested in their advances.

United have been interested in him for more than a year, but Tottenham were hoping Barcelona, Real Madrid or AC Milan would firm up their interest and start a summer auction.

With Barca, Madrid and Milan prioritising other players, however, Spurs are now stuck in the awkward position of negotiating with the one club Berbatov has always made it clear that he would love to join.

Even if Barcelona were to call off their chase for Arsenal’s Emmanuel Adebayor and rival United’s bid for Berbatov, the Bulgarian is unlikely to change his mind.

After former manager Martin Jol left Tottenham last season, he revealed: “I always had a good relationship with Dimitar. But the trouble is he wanted to go to Manchester United.

“It was in his mind and I could do nothing about it.”

Following the appointment of new boss Juande Ramos, Dantchev flew to England in November to hold talks with Spurs’ sporting director, Damien Comolli, about his client’s future.

Dantchev made it clear Berbatov wants to be playing in the Champions League next season, but agreed he would shelve any plans to move on and fire the club’s bid to qualify for the UEFA Cup again.

Now, having helped Tottenham win the Carling Cup and secure their place in Europe, Berbatov believes he has kept his end of the bargain and should not be prevented from joining United.

He has not handed in an official transfer request but will ask Spurs to let him leave for Old Trafford and count on their co-operation in getting a deal done as quickly as possible. United are looking at a £30m package made up of £25m plus add-ons and, although Tottenham will initially reiterate they want £35m, that should be enough to clinch Berbatov, who could play his last game for Spurs in Spain today.

As part of their stay at the Oliva Nova complex, between Alicante and Valencia, the team are due to take on Spanish minnows Tavernes. With Berbatov’s strike partner Robbie Keane also pining for a £20m move to Liverpool, Ramos will now make strengthening his forward positions a priority.

Espanyol’s Luis Garcia has already been lined up and Ramos will look for a new target man to replace Berbatov.

He is planning on using one out-and-out striker for much of next season, with Luka Modric, Giovani dos Santos and possibly Garcia operating as slightly withdrawn schemers. Tottenham are seeking to lure Blackburn’s Roque Santa Cruz to White Hart Lane and have also shown interest in Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka and Real Zaragoza’s Diego Milito.

The fact United have gone for Berbatov instead of long-term target Klaas-Jan Huntelaar could open the way for Spurs to bid for the Dutchman and they have also considered Russia’s Roman Pavlyuchenko.

Generally, I am sceptical about newspaper rumours, but you have to feel that this is concrete when we are talking about virtually every tabloid and broadsheet running the story.

There have also been none of the usual denials from any of the parties involved.

sam id love your thoughts on the current situation...i havent heard from you in a while

Honestly.......beyond caring. If we sign him I'll welcome him like I do any other signing, and hope he turns out to be as good as you say. If not, meh. It's looking more and more likely that it will happen though.

By the way, good to see you still around, haven't seen much of you for ages.

Why sceptical? Do you not rate Berbatov, Sam? Who would you prefer if not Berbatov?

I've been over this so many times.

Just to briefly sum up, I do rate Berbatov (just not as highly as many others do) and think he'd do well here, however, I'd prefer a different kind of striker (i.e a really pacy one who finishes clinically).

A Villa or Benzema man then.

Fair enough.

Fair enough.

Not really.

Don't care who it is, just that they have those 2 qualities. Also, I've said many times, I don't really want a 'big' name striker.

What he brings if anything is variation to their rest of our forward players. He is the sort who would knit everything together. Good with his back to goal. He can drop deep and join up the play leaving space for Rooney or Ronaldo to get into.

I hope we get him over any other player this summer.

who is a decent replacement for ronaldo... messi? or maybe Robinho. we can 't replace Ronaldo talent.

We probably could, but it would take a few years to see, and it would take well longer to reproduce Ronaldo's effectiveness. Remember Ronaldo didn't really break out for us until his 4th season, although his talent was always unquestioned

So would I, but we arent going to be able to get Benzema or Villa if they dont want to move here.

Theres two things about Berbatov which make me happy with this almost inevitable transfer; firstly he's proven in the premiership and if he can score 20+ goals a season for Tottenham considering the shite midfield they've had in the last 2 years, then I cant wait see how he delivers with our midfield service.

Secondly he seems desperate to put on our shirt which many of us can appreciate especially during this on-going Ronaldo saga - lets face it, we can throw money at Lyon and Benzema but if the lad wants to stay, then there really is no point. And im sure that Sir Alex would tame that rebellious attitude of his for those of you concerned about his supposed sulking personality.

I'd be more than happy if Berbatov was our sole signing this season (providing Ronaldo doesnt leave, but I want the cnut to leave......welcome aboard Sergio Aguero )

I agree with you. Ronaldo wont go anywhere at least for this season. We should use this season to target possible replacement or players to work on a new system. If we lose Ronaldo our style will change as he is big part of our attack and the majority of the goals came from him.

Fergie will take his time to see options for the future but we are gonna keep Ronaldo for now, there is no question about that.

United offer £28m for Berbatov - now Spurs wait for Arshavin decision on White Hart Lane switch

Manchester United have agreed to pay Tottenham a club-record £28million for Dimitar
Berbatov - but may have to wait a few weeks before completing the deal.

Sir Alex Ferguson finally made his move for the Bulgarian striker over the weekend.

An initial bid of £20m was rejected and it was then reported that United would make a £25m take-it-or-leave it offer.

However, the two clubs have now come to an agreement after chairman Daniel Levy insisted the champions pay closer to £30m.

Unhappy: Berbatov wants out of Tottenham - and could get his wish soon

Publicly, Spurs are still insisting the striker isn’t for sale but head coach Juande Ramos has been planning for next season without him for some time.

The 27-year-old has made it clear he wants to leave and while he preferred a move to Barcelona or Real Madrid because of the lifestyle in Spain, United are the only club to have followed up their interest with a solid bid.

Tottenham had put a new contract in place in case no offer was forthcoming, but the player showed little interest in signing it.

Target: Arshavin
Reports in the London Evening Standard suggest Spurs will still not let him leave for Old Trafford until they find a replacement and the club have joined Arsenal and Chelsea in the hunt for Zenit St Petersburg’s Euro 2008 Russian star Andrei Arshavin.

Blackburn striker Roque Santa Cruz is also a target, although Tottenham are already having difficulty negotiating with Blackburn over England winger David Bentley.

The Lancashire club want £18m for the former Arsenal star who is keen to return to London and is a Spurs fan.

Tottenham may also use the funds from the Berbatov sale to make another move for Barcelona striker Samuel Eto’o, although he has already made it clear he isn’t interested in coming to White Hart Lane.

But while Berbatov will go to United, they won’t allow assistant manager Gus Poyet to follow him.

The Uruguayan is on Ferguson’s wish list to replace Carlos Queiroz, but Spurs are determined to keep him and he is happy at the club

I dont really get all this United will have to wait bollocks. He's going to leaver and Spurs are clearly going to get a couple of forwards. Why feck about delaying this deal when the money could be in the bank.

Whilst I was originally thinking the same thing as Sam, considering who's actually available I think this could be the best option.

This sounds a bit weird but I reckon Berba could have the influence that Carrick has on the midfield but for the forward line for exactly the reasons you've posted.

If him and Rooney can bring the best out of each other like Carrick and Scholes do then we're laughing.

If the report is true and a deal has been reached, then obviously Spurs will ideally want to tie up any deal(s) for a replacement before letting Berbatov go.

Otherwise they risk being left unable to get a suitable replacement in time and/or risk paying over the odds because selling clubs will know for sure that we have 28m (let's say) burning a hole in our pockets.

I'd love berbatov to come just like I wanted rooney and tevez to come and I don't care what price we get him for as it's not up to me. The united staff know more about how much we have to spend, player valuations and our finances then all of us do.

I know if we do get berbatov he will be a massive success. He still quite fast which goes against the common misconception. Plus anyway, we have great speed in the team in ronaldo, rooney, nani, saha?? manucho?? so i don't see the problem.

I also don't think pace is our main priority when it coems to choosing a striker. Ultimatly we need a player who can play on his own up top has good strength and can win the ball in the air. All which he is supremly good at.

If spurs are waiting on Arshavin they might have a long wait.He prefers the arse.

Jesus, am I the only one who thinks we're paying over the odds for Berbatov if we pay 25+ million?

fecking great bit of business on Spurs part..

(no thats not me saying he's shit btw)
