Berbatov

In the meantime United's long-term pursuit of Dimitar Berbatov is understood to be snagged on the problem that the European champions have offered Tottenham Hotspur a deal comprising cash plus a player that they value in total at around £25m. Tottenham have rejected the deal and told United that they want to be paid in cash for their star striker and that they value him at closer to £30m.

Ferguson raised the stakes yesterday in his attempts to sign the 27-year-old when he said that United had "made a bid for one player who would enhance us a great deal". He did not name Berbatov but he did not have to; United have identified the Bulgarian international as the man to fulfil the role of an out-and-out centre-forward. Roque Santa Cruz is regarded as a back-up target behind Berbatov.

United's approach of offering a combination of a player and money demonstrates a more parsimonious attitude to transfers than they have entertained in the recent past when they laid out big cash fees on signings such as Rio Ferdinand, Juan Sebastian Veron, Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Wayne Rooney.

Have offered a player as part of the package according to the independent.

Did you read the article mate? We made an offer first as you said but they told us that wasnt what they wanted and we made another offer in cash. The last offer is the one Fergie mentioned yesterday and was pretty confident that was a good one.

The last paragraph of the article may have confused some readers into thinking the policy is a rigid one. If the press is correct, Barca in the shout can complicate things.

Yes I read it and I dont see your point. The change is that allegedly a player had been included which had not been said so far and was why I mentioned it. It does not say anything about a further bid. They may have said they did not want that deal but the last offer mentioned yesterday had...

. No Name
. No Fee
. No confirmation on whether the bid was accepted or rejected

Correct? Or do you know the details of the deal?

Another hunch, a psychoanalysis. At MUTV, Paddy Crerand would usually be enthusiastic when being asked about Berbatov. Just a few days ago, the same question popped up, but Paddy looked like he was disinterested and just brushed it aside saying it was just a speculation. Yes, I may be looking too much at the body language, but hey, it's just a banter, and who knows, he has probably heard a thing or two.

No other team in world football would have paid what we did for hargreaves.

Whereas I think a number of teams would have paid 20-25mil or so for berbatov. Add the utd premium to the fee and its not that bad.

Where are these number of teams.?

Its all bluff and counter bluff at this point. If we were not interested in him you genuinely belive a striker the quality of berbatov who wants to leave would still be at spurs come the end of the season with teams like barcelona, arsenal, liverpool, NEWCASTLE!! in the market for strikers?

Our interest is likely to ward off a number of clubs much like it did in the tevez saga because we have a tendency to inflate fees!

You were saying drifter :smirk:??

BARCELONA are threatening to hijack Manchester United’s bid to sign Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov.

United have had a £20million offer for Berbatov rejected and are planning to make a second approach, with manager Sir Alex Ferguson confirming the club have tabled an official bid for a player.

But Barca are understood to be preparing a £24m offer for Berbatov, which would be far closer to Tottenham’s asking price.

Berbatov is believed to favour a switch to Old Trafford, but Spurs have made it very clear they would prefer to sell him to an overseas club.

Barcelona have also been linked with a move for Chelsea target Robinho, but Real Madrid would be reluctant to sell to their Spanish rivals.

Doubt the deal is in danger, berbatov would be aware that if the interest is genuine he was their 2nd choice. So provided we have a bid accepted he'll choose us. But they'd sell to barce cheaper

Fergie's had his fair share of disasters so i think he's entitled to voice that opinion....however wrong it is.

I did not dismiss his opinion and he has also had more than his fair share of successes. I said Ferguson would be a better judge on that happening if he did sign. Which is true.

hmmm, so if someone had come out with the same statement before veron signed you'd be saying the same....

Fergie rarely makes mistakes with strikers though, has to be said.

Yes I would just like before Ferdinand, Rooney or Carrick. I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt Gus, he has had a tiny bit of success however you spin it. Including winning the Champions League in May.

If Tottenham wont bulge from their 30m valutation then it would not be a bad idea to think of other option. Who knows, maybe we can add 10m to that sum and bid for Benzema.

Fergie confrms Berbatov bid
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that he has lodged a bid for Tottenham's Dimitar Berbatov.

United have been tracking the Bulgarian striker for a number of months and now they have firmed up their interest with an official bid.

It is not yet known the extent of United's bid for the 27-year-old although reports claim it is below £25million which is said to be Spurs' asking price.

But Ferguson is confident he will land Berbatov.

"We have made Tottenham an offer on Berbatov and we have good expectations that this deal will go through," he said as he jetted out with his player's ahead of United pre-season tour of South Africa.

"Berbatov has been impressive during a long time and would be a great addition to our attack.

"I think time will work for us more than against us.

"We will not stress this situation. We are hoping to have a constructive conversation with Tottenham in the near future."

I will not be happy if we spend £30 million for him, however if it was between £20-25 million I will be happy.

I also hope we get this Sanchez guy, looks a talent

So its been confirmed, another of those 'secret' transfers that everyone knew about.

I'm excited with the prospect of him playing for us, i think he'll bring a new dimension to our play and almost certainly allow Rooney to play that bit deeper.

I'd personally prefer us to sign a player who has shown he can cut it in the premiership rather than the likes of Benzema/Huntelaar who would have to prove they could make it - there'd be a far greaterchance of them flopping than Berbatov.

I'll be happy if we can conclude this signing, if we keep Ronaldo too which now seems likely then i see no reason why we can't go on to have just as much success as last season - if not more.

Good move IMO

S.A.F. did not name the club but Sky Sports speculated on his behalf.

Thats what I thought, so many websites reporting that we have lodged a bid for a player but only one or two like the used to be reliable SKySports, declaring the Berbatov statement. I watched an interview of SAF at the airport yesterday on MUTV. He said a player.. didn't mention a name??

So what whispers are whispers and rumors are rumors, I would be shocked if it wasnt Mr. Dimitar Berbatov

I'd expect the interview to be on the official site at some point today if Custis didn't make it up. Nothing just yet.

Berbatov shall be ours

Thus declares Alex the great one. *winks

Yes, Based on earlier reports

How do you know that?

Based on earlier reports.

bbest SSN have just taken that from the "exclusive" from The Sun from this morning, not the interview yesterday. Whether the quotes are true or not is a different manner.

I personally think it'd be extremely unwise to give away details of the player in question unless the deal was at a fairly advanced stage.

I guess the good thing about all this is it will surely bring an end to all the speculation on who it is we are after.
