after the ramsey debacle i will wait until he signs the contract until i think he is definitely ours but the signs are definitely encouraging.

"Manchester United have expressed interest in Berbatov but I cannot comment on the issue further."

So is this all we are going on so far? Which could also refer to last season.

Dimitar Berbatov - Manchester United agree £28 million Dimitar Berbatov fee as Tottenham close on David Bentley
Heading north: Dimitar Berbatov is on his way to Manchester United

Tottenham had been warned by United that they would be not be held to ransom in their pursuit to sign Berbatov, after they had an initial £20 million approach rebuffed over the weekend, setting a maximum limit of £25 million on the Bulgarian striker.

But reports suggest that both clubs have since reached a comprise for £2 million less than the original £30 million asking price Spurs had demanded for the player, who has scored 27 goals in the Premier League since his arrival from German side Bayer Leverkusen two years ago.

United want to pay Tottenham a fee of £18 million up front with the rest of the transfer payable after success-related clauses and appearances, similar to the arrangement they struck with the north London club for Michael Carrick in 2006.

Berbatov, 27, has made no secret of his desire to move to the champions in past and his agent Emil Danchev confirmed: "Manchester United have expressed interest in Berbatov but I cannot comment on the issue further."

Although the north London club publicly announced that Berbatov is not for sale, it is understood that manager Juande Ramos had being planning the forthcoming campaign without the forward since the end of last season.

In his place, Spurs have a number of options they are exploring. Russia's Andrei Arshavin and Espanyol's Luis Garcia have been mentioned while Blackburn's Roque Santa Cruz is a possibility at £10 million.

Barcelona's Samuel Eto'o, deemed surplus to requirements at the Nou Camp, is thought to be Ramos' first choice replacement.

One Blackburn Rovers player almost certainly on his way to White Hart Lane though, is David Bentley - identified by Ramos earlier in the summer as one of his primary transfer targets.

The Spaniard aims to complete a deal for the unsettled England international by including goalkeeper Paul Robinson as a makeweight.

Robinson's exchange to Ewood Park would see him replace Brad Friedel who would be granted permission to seal a move to Aston Villa with the midlands club poised to sign the American goalkeeper for £2.5 million.

Friedel's pending arrival at Villa Park would end manager Martin O'Neill's lingering interest in Liverpool goalkeeper Scott Carson, who spent last season on loan at the club but priced out of an immediate return with his £10 million valuation.

Newly-promoted Stoke City have reportedly lodged a £4 million offer for Carson's services but could yet face competition from Middlesbrough.

Bentley, 23, has been linked to a host of Premier League clubs, including Aston Villa and Liverpool, since his admission that he wanted to leave Blackburn following former manager Mark Hughes departure to Manchester City last month.

Although new boss Paul Ince is desperate to retain Bentley on his books he is, however, resigned to losing the former Arsenal player with Liverpool's £6 million rated Jermaine Pennant earmarked as a direct replacement.

Bentley, capped six times by his country, has remained resolute on his wish to leave the club in favour of a return to London in a move to enhance his England credentials under national coach Fabio Capello and it is seemingly likely Tottenham will soon formally announce his arrival.

I'm not trying to put all this down but I've read all these reports today through this thread anyway.

Too much money for him... he better earn it

Man Utd is after the best strikers in the world. If it wasnt him would have been Benzema and for more than 40 millions because of his age.

When you know Utd is interested you know you can ask what you want, Is that of feck off. Simply as that.

Looks like this is going to spark Spurs into a transfer frenzy... talking about them going for Santa Cruz to replace him in one of tomorrows rags as well as Bentley heading to WHL and Robinson on his way out too...

True... and clubs are probably assuming we're going to get a barrow load of cash if that Portuguese fella leaves.

Jesus Christ.....£28 million we're being taken for total mugs.

And for the record, he is NOT as good as Bergkamp.

Manchester United draw in Dimitar Berbatov

Manchester United are moving closer to bringing Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov to Old Trafford. While United have distanced themselves from reports claiming the clubs have agreed a £28 million fee for the Bulgarian, the parties are closing in on a deal for Berbatov.

Tottenham are keen to sign a replacement before they allow the striker, who scored 23 goals last season, to leave. While they have identified Blackburn winger David Bentley, at a price of £17 million, as a player they want, they will still need to buy a target man before releasing Berbatov.

With the future of Cristiano Ronaldo, United's top-scorer last season, still in doubt, Sir Alex Ferguson is keen to boost his attacking resources and Berbatov has impressed the Scot with the ease in which he has taken to the Premier League since his arrival at Spurs in 2006.

Speculation over Berbatov's future began mid-way through last season's campaign with Emil Dantchev, the Bulgarian's agent, claiming the striker was interested in moving to a "big club". In April, rumours of a departure increased after Dantchev claimed that contract talks at White Hart Lane had broken down.

Spurs, who rejected a £20 million offer from United for the player at the weekend, are holding out for something approaching treble the £10.9m they paid Bayer Leverkusen two years ago. While United are said to be unwilling to pay more than £25m, any potential deal could rival the £29.1m United paid Leeds for their record-signing Rio Ferdinand, in 2002.

The record amount of money received by Spurs was the £18.6m United paid for Michael Carrick in 2006, though the Old Trafford club paid only an initial £12m for the midfielder and they may attempt to broker a similar deal for Berbatov.

Spurs manager Juande Ramos could return to his native Spain to sign Real Zaragoza's 29-year-old Argentine striker Diego Milito, who would cost around £8m. Everton are also interested in the player.

Another potential replacement is Blackburn's Paraguayan forward Roque Santa Cruz, who scored 23 goals in his first season in England.

£30m for Dimi or forget it

By MARK IRWIN

Published: Today

TOTTENHAM have told Manchester United Dimitar Berbatov can go for £30million - and no less.

United moved in with a £20m bid for Berba on Saturday - as revealed in SunSport.

United boss Alex Ferguson has long been a fan of the Bulgarian hitman, 27, who has averaged more than a goal every other game since arriving at Spurs two years ago from Bayer Leverkusen.

Chairman Daniel Levy rejected United’s bid and yesterday shocked Old Trafford with his demands for a near-British record fee.

Levy is determined to play hardball after receiving stinging criticism from fans for the £18.6m sale of Michael Carrick to United two years ago.

They believe the England midfielder was under-priced and Levy is determined that will not happen again.

He is also waiting for an offer he cannot refuse from Liverpool for striker Robbie Keane — probably around £20m.

But United refuse to go above £24m for Berba and are ready to play a waiting game, knowing Levy is desperate to raise cash for boss Juande Ramos.

The Spaniard is already determined to sign £17m Blackburn ace David Bentley.

Spurs hope to recoup £5m by sending keeper Paul Robinson to Rovers in part-exchange.

Berbatov and Keane featured for Spurs as they cruised to an 8-0 win over Tavernes in Spain last night.

New £4.7m buy Giovani Dos Santos bagged a double on his debut with Jamie O’Hara (2), Tomas Pekhart (2), Steed Malbranque and Aaron Lennon also on target.

Stupid fans.

Surely the last thing Spurs would want is a disgruntled player on their books who's heart is set on another club..... oh! :wenger:

I didn't say you "wasn't clever enough to read". Please don't misrepresent my words.

I said you weren't clever enough to understand that in attempting to wind me up, you let yourself get wound up by my response.

Which has been much in evidence, not least by the fact you still think I said something I didn't.

Look Ekeke, it doesn't change the fact that you handed out the first pathetic insult. Even tempted me with sarcasm, though not directly quoting me. Both were irrelevant (as usual) to what i was saying.

You are a fecking idiot, and have avoided everything i have said, arguing irrelevant points and being pedantic about what i have written.

It has been noted many times that you completely avoid questions and answers relayed before you, it continues.

Stop acting like a prat and hiding behind your pathetic, sarcastic smilies.

Don't know what stats you were looking at.

Nor do i, now. :D

Yet i am sure i heard o read it claimed by too many people, where were they getting it from?

I'll have to look into this, all rather embarrassing really. lol

That aside, i am still of the view that we agreed terms too soon and it was probably to our own disadvantage. I was expecting 24ish million myself.

Take it outside you homos

I'm excited about this move for 2 reasons:

1) Berbatov is a terrific striker. He is up there with the best in England.
2) His arrival will signal a return to Wayne Rooney's natural position.

Whatever anyone says about the fee, it is probably about right. Let's use the £28 million figure widely touted. Robbie Keane is being talked about at the £20 million level. Barry at the £18 million mark.

The doubters will be eating humble pie if this deal goes through. Berbatov would be a star at OT.

I hope you're right... with the players around him he can't fail to succeed at OT.

No one doubts that he'll do well (I don't think?), it's just that we could do with a different type of striker and that, given his age (he'd be 5 months off his 28th B'day when he played his first PL game for us) the price is fecking ridiculous.

As I have already outlined in my previous posts:

- People have this erroneous perception that a player starts to deteriorate at the age of 30. It is simply not true. If anything, someone like Eto'o is more prone to sudden regression because of his reliance on his physical gifts like his pace. Berbatov's game does not revolve around these aspects and so it is not inconceivable that he could play until he is 32/33 at the top level. Plenty of players have played at United until and even past this age and performed with distinction (Sheringham and Scholes, to name two). Moreover, what is the problem if we do only get 5 seasons out of him? That is the same sort of period that Cantona and van Nistelrooy spent here and look at their impact in that time. Put another way, 5 years can be considered to be half of a players top level career.

- The fee is largely irrelivent. I don't see why people get so heated about a figure of £28 million. If he helps to deliver trophies then it is money well spent. Is is better to opt for a cheaper alternative and not do as well in the trophy hunt? Besides, SAF has obviously spent a while deciding who he wants to get in. Eto'o is available for transfer yet SAF has seemingly dismissed him, along with other players. He has highlighted Berbatov as having the qualities and I trust the judgement. The Glazers are relative spenthrifts. Sure they have made transfer funds available, but it has been in the contexts of big price hikes and streamlining of other aspects of the club. They would not be financing a move for any player unless it fitted with their prudent plans. It suits both parties to allow the media to inflate any potential transfer figures: Spurs look as though they have driven a hard bargain, whilst United's owners look as though they have made a big transfer kitty available. Is a fee of £28 million so exorbitant when you consider that it will probably be our only signing of the summer?
